PENRICE AND MARGAM ESTATE RECORDS: MARGAM ABBEY CHARTERS 2000007 Rhodd / Donation The Executors of the late Mr J T T Fletcher and the Commissioners of Inland Revenue trwy law / per Sotheby's, London Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1999-2000 Disgrifiad / Description The Margam Abbey Charters, forming part of the Penrice and Margam Estate Records previously held on deposit (see Annual Report 1941-42, pp. 26-7), have been accepted by H. M. Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the Library. The Margam Abbey muniments, spanning the period from the foundation of the Abbey by Robert, first earl of Gloucester, c. 1147, to its dissolution in 1536, comprise hundreds of charters and deeds, over half from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and many with well preserved seals, together with royal charters, charter rolls and papal bulls, and form one of the most complete series of archives of any medieval abbey in Great Britain and probably in Europe.

NLW FACS 928 2000026 Rhodd / Donation Mr V R F Clow, Melbourne, Australia and Mr Trevor G James, York Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1999-2000 Disgrifiad / Description Photocopies of works by Robbit Jon Clow (Robert John Armstrong, 1877-1952) comprising an incomplete memoir of his mother entitled 'The Life of Frances Edwards' (1838-1921) written in a manuscript volume, dated 1932, which also includes the autobiography of Matthew Owen (1769-1839), cousin of Goronwy Owen (1723-69), and grandfather of Frances Edwards; together with an undated pamphlet The Royal Charter containing biographical information relating to Frances Edwards, with an account of the events leading up to the tragic end of the ship Royal Charter which hit the rocks at Moelfre, Anglesey, on 26 October 1859 (Francis Edwards visited the scene of the disaster). She was also related to the Rev. John Elias (1774-1841) and, in 1860, she emigrated to Australia.

(Amwythig, 1773) wedi'i golygu gan Rhys Jones, yn dwyn enw George Brymer, Highgate, Garndolbenmaen, 1860, ac yn cynnwys marwnad ganddo i'w fab John a fu farw 19 Rhagfyr 1866, yn ddwy ar bymtheng mlwydd oed; ynghyd â thoriad o'r wasg o Cronicl Cymru yn rhoi adroddiad am ei angladd (NLW ex 2043). A copy of Gorchestion Beirdd Cymru... (Shrewsbury, 1773), edited by Rhys Jones, bearing the name of George Brymer, Highgate, Garndolbenmaen, 1860, and containing an elegy by him to his son John who died 19 December 1866, aged seventeen; together with a press cutting from Cronicl Cymru giving an account of his funeral (NLW ex 2043).

Jones (1822-98) to an unknown recipient, regarding further emigration to the Welsh Colony in Patagonia. The letter was published in The National Library of Wales Journal, vol. xxiii, 1983-84, pp. 319-20. The original letter is held at Swansea University Library (W/F 2936 Jon).
