The Search for San Ffraid ‘A thesis submitted to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in the fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts’ 2012 Jeanne Mehan 1 Abstract The Welsh traditions related to San Ffraid, called in Ireland and Scotland St Brigid (also called Bride, Ffraid, Bhríde, Bridget, and Birgitta) have not previously been documented. This Irish saint is said to have traveled to Wales, but the Welsh evidence comprises a single fifteenth-century Welsh poem by Iorwerth Fynglwyd; numerous geographical dedications, including nearly two dozen churches; and references in the arts, literature, and histories. This dissertation for the first time gathers together in one place the Welsh traditions related to San Ffraid, integrating the separate pieces to reveal a more focused image of a saint of obvious importance in Wales. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1950-51 Disgrifiad / Description A manuscript music book, containing Welsh airs, written by Miss Bonsall, 1807; naturalists' calendars kept at Glan Rheidol, 1841, 1866-70; and diaries and notebooks of Henry Bonsall, 1882-1947. An interesting miscellaneous collection of over 100 printed books, mostly of the nineteenth century and in English, but containing eleven books in other languages (Dept of Printed Books). Five of the books in the collection are of eighteenth century date and eight are seventeenth century books. The last-mentioned include Latin editions of works by Cicero (1606), Erasmus (1613), and Ovid (1626), an English political tract of the year of the Restoration (1660), the 1686 edition of Jeremy Taylor's Holy Living, and a travel book of 1797. The two others are of considerable local interest, namely, Shiers's Mine Adventure in Wales (1700) and a volume of verse entitled Poetical Piety or Poetry made Pious, by William Williams (London, 1677). The latter is dedicated to 'Sir Thomas Pryse of Go-gerthan. .', and the author describes himself in the dedicatory letter as 'a native both of your Neighbourhood and County'. There is a pencil note on the fly-leaf in the hand of the testator stating that the copy came from the 'Wallog Library sold by Col. G. G. Williams'. The eighteenth century books include a copy of the 1713 edition of Thoughts on Religion by W. Beveridge, bishop of St Asaph. The bulk of the collection is of nineteenth century date and the books are highly miscellaneous.

Eisteddfod Swyddffynnon 2021 Yn anffodus eleni ni fu modd i ni gynnal yr Eisteddfod yn ôl yr arfer a hynny oherwydd sefyllfa Covid-19. Felly, nôl yn yr Hydref wrth orfod gwneud penderfyniad, cytunwyd y byddem yn medru parhau efo’r cystadlaethau llenyddiaeth a ffotograffiaeth, a glynnu at gyhoeddi’r canlyniadau ar ddiwrnod yr Eisteddfod, sef 26ain Chwefror 2021. Y beirniaid Llenyddiaeth oedd John a Menna Jones, Ffair Rhos a dyma eu beirniadaeth hwy i chi o’r cyfansoddiadau a ddaeth i law: Bobol bach-am gystadlu! Mae’r pandemig byd eang wedi creu poenau a thristwch i filiynau ac mae’n parhau i wneud hynny. Ond yng nghanol y cloeon mawr a newid ffordd o fyw, mae ein beirdd a’n llenorion wedi dal ati i greu a hynny ar raddfa tu hwnt o swmpus. Er gwaethaf gohirio Eisteddfodau, ni ddinistriwyd yr awen, ac mae cynhyrchion llenyddol Eisteddfod Swyddffynnon 2021 yn brawf pendant o hynny. Roeddem wedi gobeithio cael rhyw ddwsin i bymtheg o ymdrechion ymhob categori, ond pan gyrhaeddodd y cyfansoddiadau drwy law’r ysgrifenyddes, Annwen Isaac, dros y penwythnos, aed ati i gyfri, ac er mai ond pedair cystadleuaeth lenyddol oedd yno, derbyniwyd 258 o ymdrechion - ie, 258. Anhygoel, a phob un o safon gymeradwy. Tasg cwbl amhosibl bron oedd mynd ati i wneud penderfyniadau, a bu darllen a darllen a darllen, gan greu pentyrrau di-ri ar y bwrdd oedd lawer rhy fach i’r broses ddidoli. Ond wedi tridiau a their noson lafurus, rhaid oedd dod i ryw fath o derfyn, ac weithiau nid yw dau ben yn well nag un gan fod gwahaniaeth barn yn medru creu anghytundeb!!! Fodd bynnag, dyma ni o’r diwedd wedi cytuno, gan bwysleisio mai’n naturiol chwaeth bersonol sydd wedi ein cynorthwyo i osod trefn.
