Bryson and Richard Carter* Brown flatsedge (Cyperus fuscus) is widely distributed in Europe, Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Mediterranean region of Northern Africa. It was apparently introduced into North America in the late 1800s and has steadily moved southward and westward. Brown flatsedge is reported new to Arkansas and Mississippi herewith. Field observations from early spring until frost were made between 2003 and 2007 from populations present at three sites: Chicot County, Arkansas, and Pearl River and Washington counties, Mississippi. Under natural field conditions, brown flatsedge plants germinated from late March and early April until frost. Inflorescences were observed in mid-May and seed production continued until frost. In field populations, the average numbers of scales per spikelet, inflorescences per plant, and spikelets per inflorescence were 15, 28, and 33, respectively. Greenhouse experiments were established in 2008 at Stoneville, MS, to determine growth parameters and the reproductive potential of brown flatsedge. In greenhouse experiments, by 10 wk after emergence (WAE), brown flatsedge plants were 30.2 cm tall and 63.9 cm in diameter, and dry weights were 1.4, 1.0, 2.0, 0.5, and 1.9 g for roots, culms, leaves, bracts, and inflorescences, respectively. Brown flatsedge culms and inflorescences appeared 5 WAE, and by 9 WAE all plants were producing seed. Brown flatsedge could pose a threat to natural plant communities and rice agriculture in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas. Additional research is needed to determine seed longevity and ecological range potential, and to develop inexpensive and effective control methods. -

McDonald Department of Entomology Quaestiones Entomologicae University of Alberta 2:7-150. 1966 The male genitalia of 85 and the female genitalia of 80 species of North American pentatomoid bugs are described. The male genitalia were found to vary very widely in the tribes Pachycorini and Odontoscelini of the Scutellerinae. The female genitalia were less variable. Species in the tribe Scutellerini are very easily defined on the basis of the male genitalia. The Pentatominae, Asopinae, and Podopinae are very uniform in the structure of the genitalia and are closely related to one another. The spermatheca of all species examined in the above sub families except Trichopepla semivittata (Say) (Pentatominae), has an elongate membraneous dilation with a central sclerotized rod. Median penal lobes occur only in the Pentatominae, Asopinae and Podopinae with the exception of one scutellerine, Symphylus carribeanus(Kirkaldy). The Cydnidae exhibit great diversity of form both in the male and female genitalia. The status of this family will remain obscure until further species have been examined. The Acantho- somidae posses pentatomine type genitalia. The genitalia of Piezostemum subulatum (Thunberg) do not resemble those of other species of the Tessaratomidae so far described. On the basis of this work it is suggested that the Scutellerinae be accorded family status; the Asopinae and Podopinae should be reduced to tribes within the Pentatominae; the Acanthosomidae reduced to subfamily status ivithin the Pentatomidae and Piezostemum should be raised to subfamily status within the Tessaratomidae. -

Aims: We determine the taxonomic boundaries among species of the genus Cyperus distributed in Northeast of Iran by using morphological and nut micro-morphological characters. Study Design: Morphometric and nut micro-morphology studies of species of Cyperus in northeast of Iran. RICH* Plant life, 2 J Elizabeth Street, London SW J W 9RP ABSTRACT Cyperus fuscus is a rare plant in Britain and probably always has been. It has been recorded in a total of 13 sites in England and two in Jersey, but is currently known from six sites and one site respectively (c . 50% decline). It is an annual of bare, seasonally exposed, nutrient-rich, base-rich mud on the edges of ponds and ditches. It is at its northern limit of distribution and is probably limited by climate. Population counts for extant sites are given for the period 1993- 1996. The numbers of plants vary from year to year and site to site, with many observers noting it is most abundant in hot, drought years. Four sites have numbers below the minimum required to conserve all polymorphic genes with a frequeney of 0·05 in the population. Most sites are grazed by stock, but in some, scrub has been removed to improve the habitat. Only onc site is not protected. KEYW ORDS : Rare species, conservation. INTRODUCTION Cyperusfuscus L. (Cyperaceae), Brown Galinga1e, is a rare plant in Britain. In 1992, the wild-plant conservation charity Plantlife became concerned that it was amongst the most threatened plants in Britain. It was therefore included in their "Back from the brink" project, which aims to conserve critically endangered plant species through research and management work. About 20 rare plant species have been included in this project between 1992 and 1996, which represents a significant contribution to the conservation of biodiversity in Britain by the voluntary sector. -

Deltamethrin, chlorantraniliprole, bifenthrin, lime-alum, and thyme oil reduced JB activity in the field. Deltamethrin, chlorantraniliprole, acetamiprid, an azadirachtin and pyrethrin mixture, an azadirachtin and neem oil extract mixture, and an extract of Chenopodium ambrosioides reduced JB activity during the bioassays. ‘Prelude’ had significantly more JB than ‘Anne’, ‘Caroline’, ‘Heritage’, ‘Dinkum’, or ‘Himbo Top’ and ‘Prime-Jan’ had significantly more JB than ‘Prime-Jim’. Compared to certain cultivars, ‘Heritage’, ‘Caroline’, ‘Himbo Top’, and ‘Prime-Jan’ had higher percentages of injured fruit and ‘Autumn Bliss’, ‘Heritage’, and ‘Caroline’ produced greater marketable and overall yields. ‘Prime-Jan’ produced more overall yield than ‘Prime-Jim’; marketable yields from both blackberry cultivars were similar.
