SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

AFC STONEHAM- GROUND MOVE

AFC Stoneham will be moving to the new Stoneham Lane complex during September and the League has received the following communication from the club regarding entry to the complex: AFC Stoneham will shortly after the start of the 2019-20 season be moving to our new facility. Our first handful of games in both leagues will be at our current ground at The HP Arena. The following is taken from the FA Website. Hampshire FA is proud to announce that they have been appointed as operators of the £9 million Stoneham Lane Football Complex facility, due to open in Autumn 2019. They are part of the Parklife Project which is an FA initiative to ensure the income generated at the football clubs is put back into funding grassroots football within the local area. In order to enter the facility, ALL users will need to register beforehand." By 'ALL users' they mean anyone who wishes to enter the ground, manager, coach, players, parent, spectator. Everyone who attends your away game at the facility will have to register first. By sharing this now, rather than dropping it in the form of a match day notification 7 days before a game, clubs are advised that it is quick and easy and can be completed at any time. http://www.hampshirefa.com/news/2019/jun/18/register-to-use-stoneham-lane-football-complex

LEAGUE NEWS

We have had a response from the F.A. regarding duplication of referee marks on Full-Time and MOAS. Unfortunately at this moment in time MOAS cannot be linked to Full Time although their Development team are looking into this to make it a future possibility. Therefore it looks as though, for now anyway, you will have to input referees’ marks into Full-Time to get through to the Players Stats page. Last week we reported an attendance at Bemerton in their opening game as being 723. I expect they wish this was true, but unfortunately it was a typo, as it was only 72. A complaint has been received over the completion of Team Sheets. Would all teams endeavour to please make sure the sheets are completed in such a way that they are easily readable, for the White boards, for the PA announcer and perhaps just as importantly- for the Match Referee to avoid any doubt over the players name. Also another reminder that clubs must advise attendances when they send in their result.

CLUB NEWS

Whitchurch United have a new Secretary, Peter Flint. He has introduced amongst other things individual Player Sponsorship which has attracted one surprising source: Long serving United player Craig Rutledge is being sponsored by Briar Cliff University Womens Soccer Team in Sioux City, Iowa in the United States. They are coached by Paul Cox, a former Jamboy. Several clubs seem to have added players ahead of the games yesterday, hopefully they met the noon deadline. We’ve already had an entry for the Programme competition, see page 2 for details- keep them coming. For those travelling to Hamworthy United please be advised that the Twin Sails lifting bridge will be out of action for an estimated couple of months, this is bound to cause some delays in the area. Congratulations to Matt Casey on his 150th appearance for at the weekend.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

John Gorman writes TADLEY CALLEVA 2-2 AMESBURY TOWN BOTH sides came into the game on the back of heavy defeats on Saturday but there was no lack of effort throughout the ninety minutes with a draw being very much a fair outcome. Whilst it was dry in Overton the roads were increasingly wetter on the twelve mile journey to Tadley and after a further brief shower the game commenced – two minutes early – to the backdrop of a rainbow high over the Clubhouse. There was no real threat on either goal in the opening ten minutes other than Brett Denham, off balance, hooking the ball just wide after the visiting goalkeeper dropped a cross but the striker had better luck with the clock showing twelve minutes. Tadley were awarded a free kick just inside the Amesbury half in the inside left channel, took it very quickly – the referee looked surprised but let play go on – and DENHAM clipped the ball low into the far corner of the net. Amesbury’s Lloyd Gardiner was crowded out after a fine run before home keeper Jack Martin, who was prone to wandering about outside his area, had to back pedal rapidly to scramble a long clearance past his post. Denham fired cross the goal but the visitors were enjoying more of the game as the half progressed with another Gardiner cross causing some panic in the area and a fiercely struck free kick from some thirty yards beaten away by Martin at the expense of a corner. The kick from the right was over hit but returned into the area, the defence failed to clear and Jordan MATTHEWS drove the ball home from some fifteen yards. Martin then had to react quickly when again caught too far from his goal line and the half ended with a header from Amesbury shipper Jack Vallis landing on the top of the net. HT 1-1 The game continued in the same enjoyable vein on the re-start with Martin saving from Gardiner and a header from the home side’s Amie Kamden bouncing on top of the bar before the Number Seventeen played a part in the proceedings. Tadley introduced substitute George Farrelly, wearing the number seventeen shirt, and with his first touch – in the seventeenth minute – he found DENHAM inside the area and the predatory striker made it two one. As in the first half Amesbury enjoyed more of the game as the half went on and they finally found an equaliser ten minutes from time. A free kick found George PLANK on the right and his shot was either missed by the keeper or suffered a deflection en route with the latter the more likely. Either way the scores were level. Amesbury’s Tyler Brockway was cautioned for a bad challenge with the home side’s Brad Neal joining him in the book for reasons none too obvious from the touchline. Then came this correspondent’s first encounter with the Sin Bin process which actually worked in favour of the offending player since Brockway was the culprit. With a caution already to his name, last season it would have been a second yellow. Amesbury had to play the last eight minutes with ten men – one assumes the offending player does not have to miss the first two minutes of the next game! – and there was still time for Martin to make another slightly desperate save when again caught too far from his line. All in all an enjoyable evening. Barlows Park is always a pleasant place to visit and both sides will probably feel they are back on track after Saturday’s defeats with the FA Cup on the horizon this weekend. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

Brian Perrett writes AFC STONEHAM 1-0 LYMINGTON TOWN HAVING started the season with an impressive win at title favourites Horndean, Lymington were surprised in midweek by Premier Division new boys AFC Stoneham going down to a defeat by a single goal at the beginning of the second half. There was no shortage of effort from the teams and both fielded a positive formation but they found it difficult to create clear cut chances. Mike Gosney had an early shot which was caught by Matt Fredericks in the home goal and, following a Gosney free kick which was cleared at the expense of a corner, Steve Flynn headed over when well placed. At the other end the home captain, Alex Welch fired in a shot that was tipped over by Henry Newman, the Lymington keeper. In fact it was Welch that was continually driving his team forward with his athleticism & boundless energy that was to earn him the man of the match. At this stage in the middle of the half, Stoneham were creating more chances but, as the half wore on, Lymington became more dominant with Gosney being the biggest threat. Another Gosney free kick was headed straight at Fredericks by Flynn then Gosney came close with a shot that just cleared the bar. HT 0-0 What was to prove the winning goal came within two minutes of the restart. Josh CLARK looked suspiciously offside as he gained a yard on the Lymington defence to pick up a through ball and slot it past Newman from the edge of the penalty area. Lymington were now enjoying much more possession and Flynn had a good chance when through on goal but his shot was beaten down by Fredericks at the expense of a corner. The game was coming to a frantic conclusion and the referee was struggling to maintain control as he showed yellow cards to players from both sides. Ron Frost became the first Lymington player to visit the sin bin to cool his heels and there was just time for him to return in stoppage time. So for all their effort Lymington drew a blank. Stoneham proved worthy opponents and will prove a match for most teams in this division at least in terms of industry. FT 1-0 Mike Robins writes BROCKENHURST 3-1 SOLENT UNIVERSITY FC MY 101st visit to Grigg Lane and four goals just a touch over the average for those visits. Good to get my 2019/20 Wessex goals account off the ground as well. With the visitors coming into the game on the back of their big defeat on Saturday, it would be interesting to see how they would come to terms with that. If the Badgers thought it was going to be an easy game, they were very much mistaken as the students gave a very good account of themselves over the course of the game. Had their chance gone in inside the first five minutes then no doubt it would’ve been a different story, but the goal was avoided with a scramble inside the visiting goalmouth, and as if to emphasise that the Students weren’t there to simply make up the numbers- Luke Mitchell came close moments later latching on to a strike from Tam Demunga that was only parried by Badgers’ custodian Jon Webb. The corner wasn’t cleared and Mitchell saw his 25 yarder rebound to safety off the base of the upright. It was a lively encounter with both sides giving as good as they got. Brockenhurst’s first real chance came around the 20 minute mark when a drive from an angle by Cass Newton fizzed beyond the upright and then close to the half hour a Will Tickle effort was only grabbed at the second attempt by Solent keeper Alex Londors with a pair of Badgers closing in. Captain Tickle was instrumental in most of the home side’s build up and it was his low cross that was converted by Rafa RAMOS on 38 minutes that brought the opening goal. HT 1-0 A couple of minutes after the resumption and it was 2-0. Jude NWACHUKWU firing into the roof of the net from a knock down around the edge of the penalty area. It looked like game over when seven minutes later the same player converted a penalty after a Solent player was unable to avoid conceding a hand ball.

This seemed to lift the Solent side and can consider themselves unlucky not to have grabbed a goal on 58 but the move ended with a superb block by Ronan Moore. However a deserved goal did come on 65 minutes when a Mitchell corner was fire home by Craig HUNT. The visitors looked the more likely side once that goal went in and perhaps were unlucky not to get another goal late on, although a rasping shot from Tickle with around 15 minutes left nicked the crossbar. FT 3-1

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

A full Premier Division programme and six Division One fixtures prior to the FA Cup entering the Schedules and four Premier Division Clubs made it two wins out of two. AFC Stoneham continued their impressive start to life at the higher level with a Josh Clark goal, the only one of the game, giving them victory over Lymington. Hamworthy United defeated near neighbours Bournemouth by the odd goal in three with all the goals in the second half and Bournemouth in front at one stage. Brockenhurst scored three against Solent University, Jade Nwachukwu netting twice, and conceded only one in reply whilst Alresford marked their first ever League fixture at Fleet with a late goal that gave them a 3-2 victory. The two Clubs have met many times in various local Cup Competitions but this appears to be their initial meeting in the Sydenhams League. Bashley attracted the highest attendance again – over 200 witnessing their 2-1 defeat of Christchurch – while two Curt Robbins goals helped Fareham to an impressive 3-2 win at Baffins. Sadly the attendance was not reported. The remaining three games in the Division finished all square with Portland and Shaftesbury level at one apiece and a similar scoreline between Horndean and Hamble Club while finally Brett Denham scored both goals in Tadley’s draw with Amesbury and both sides were no doubt happy with a point after heavy defeats on Saturday. One Premier Division game on Wednesday when Cowes became the first Island side to take all three points this season overcoming a first half deficit to win 2-1 at AFC Portchester. The top game in the slightly reduced Division One Programme saw Hythe & Dibden win 3-0 at Bemerton Heath with a brace from Sam Woodward and a third from Cain Prentice, and joining the Watersiders on the six point mark are Follands inflicting a 3-0 defeat on Totton & Eling with former Sholing stalwart Kevin Brewster notching his first goal for the Club. Romsey bounced back from Saturday’s defeat with a best of seven goal win at Andover Town but were given a late scare as the home side came back from four one down. Liam Magee claimed a hat trick for the winners in front of the second highest attendance of the evening. Andover New Street recorded their first victory – two nil at Verwood - Ringwood and New Milton shared two goals and the points and there were no goals at Whippingham in the encounter between Newport and US Portsmouth. So Hamworthy United and Follands lead the (still very) embryonic League Tables and nice to see the latter in that position after a couple of seasons of struggle.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

John Gorman writes SOLENT UNIVERSITY FC 0-3 PORTLAND UNITED The FA Cup always appeared in the schedules too early for Team Solent and the change of name to Solent University failed to make any difference as Portland scored three times in the opening half at a windswept Test Park and progress into the next round. In sunshine – the rain kept away, probably frightened by the wind – the visitors made a bright start with Ryan McKechnie seeing a shot blocked, an in swinging corner from Ben Morris missed by friend and foe alike and a shot by the same player saved at full stretch by home keeper Alex Londors. Callum Beasley engineered a break for the University only to be stopped by weight of numbers but the blue shirted visitors were enjoying more of the possession with Jamie Symes hitting the bar with a looping header and then being denied at close range by Londors, and it was no surprise when they took the lead midway through the half with the simplest of goals. Sometimes known as “Route One” -that is a description and not a criticism – and demonstrated on this occasion by a huge clearance from keeper Steve Boore, the Solent central defenders were nowhere, and SYMES slotted the ball past the advancing Londors. In the space of the next ten minutes one nil became three nil with two almost identical goals. First Max Buckler swung over a cross from the left touchline and SYMES outjumped the keeper to head home and when Harry Hutchinson supplied an identical cross from almost the same position SYMES hurled himself in front of a rather stationary keeper for a brave header that completed his hat trick and sent his side in at the break with a comfortable lead. HT 0-3 Londors saved from McKechnie immediately upon the restart before the wind, which had been blowing every which way thus far, suddenly got behind the University and put Portland on the back foot. Luke Mitchell made space for himself on the edge of the area and curled a shot inches wide with the goalkeeper a spectator and after a long run by Tam Demunga, Mitchell went down in the area under a challenge but the penalty appeals were waved away. Two headers were high and after Sam Buckler collected the first caution of the afternoon the home side wasted the free kick from a dangerous position. Four substitutes, three from Portland, came on in as many minutes and as the visitors regained their momentum Londors saved an Alex

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

Godfrey effort at the second attempt and Max Buckler perhaps might have done better with a shot that was too high. Solent drove forward again with defender Ethan Madden’s header held under the bar and a Mitchell free kick that was not very far wide. At the other end a thirty yard piledriver from Morris shaved the outside of the post but it was all too little too late and after an extremely childish tantrum from home substitute Paras Gill when the referees attention was elsewhere, Londors saved from McKechnie and the whistle went for time. Portland deserved their victory and will entertain relatively near neighbours Hamworthy United in the next round while Solent will, on the basis of today, have to find some firepower from somewhere. An enjoyable afternoon, though the game was marred by the wind, and very well refereed by Bognor Official Richard Sergeant with the kick-off at exactly three o’clock. FT 0-3 Roger Allen writes DOWNTON 4-2 ALTON IN some respects this was a strange game of six goals that came in two 8 minute bursts at the start and midway through the second half. To begin with it was very open and both sides could have scored before Downton opened the scoring after 3 minutes. Laurence Larbi fed TJ Moseley whose cross was side footed home by Robbie OWEN. On 7 minutes the Alton defence was split open by a through ball from Diego Romero which OWEN latched onto and finished well past Justin Courtnage in the Alton goal. No time to draw breath as Alton went straight up the other end and a parried shot by home keeper Ernest Osei fell kindly for George BOWERMAN who shot into the roof of the net. At this point there were so many chances that it was difficult to anticipate what the final score would be and so it continued with attacking players in the ascendancy at both ends. However finally the game settled and there were actually no more goals before half time. HT 2-1 The first chance after the break fell to Moseley after he had been set up by Owen but his shot just cleared the bar. The next goal, when it came just after the hour, was Alton’s. Bowerman passed to substitute Graham who fed the ball onto Chris HORTON in the clear and he finished well past Osei. On 67 minutes Downton regained the lead as the returning Shaun PRENTICE was allowed to turn and shoot. The shot was not powerful but it was well placed into the corner of the net. And two minutes later Downton made the game safe after a foul in the penalty area. MOSELEY stepped up and beat the keeper low to his left. Both sides continued to attack at will but by now the defenders had found their feet and the game ended without further goals being added. FT 4-2 Mike Robins writes BOURNEMOUTH 2-1 FRIMLEY GREEN PLAYED out in extremely strong winds, it was the Poppies who progressed to the next round of the Emirate FA Cup and pocketed over £2,200 in the process, and they had to come from behind to do so. Attacking the Winton End in the first half, it was the visitors who enjoyed the best of the opening exchanges and tested home keeper Shane Cooper inside five minutes with a fizzing free kick that stayed low and was grasped at the second attempt. With the wind behind the visitors, Poppies struggled to get the ball out of their half for long periods and it was perhaps no surprise to see

Sunday, 11 August 2019 19/20 Edition #06 Page 10 of 25

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS them go behind on 13 minutes- at the hands of a penalty converted by Shane LATIMER. The reply wasn’t long in coming. Just after the quarter hour a foul conceded by Frimley saw Foreman’s strike put behind for a corner. The visitors quickly broke from the corner, but moments later the hosts did get the ball in the net. Louis COULSON enjoyed a run into the penalty area and won two challenges- and with the rub of the green took the ball beyond the defenders and keeper to find the net. The wind dominated an otherwise closely contested tie. HT 1-1 Just a couple of minutes after the resumption, Poppies took the lead when Matt NICHOLLS bundled the ball home from a corner with the visiting defence at sixes and sevens. A rather spectacular attempt at a leveller from Latimer saw the striker volley the ball wide barely 90 seconds later. The wind continued to interfere with the pattern of play, and a long clearance saw Edgar Zanin sent on his way and perhaps in hindsight would’ve shot rather than take the ball round Frimley’s keeper Dan Bone. Had that gone in it would surely have been game over. Bournemouth looked to extend their lead with Coulson almost getting a head to a deep cross from Tyrone Carkeet and Levi Ridealgh tried his luck from long distance. Neither chance tested Bone though. With time running out it was the visitors that looked to be getting back on top in search of an equaliser as Poppies began to lose the impetus by trying to rush the play when a foot on the ball to slow things down would have been a better option perhaps. As it was the last chance went to the hosts with around five minutes left with sub Borges saw Bone off his line and fired goalwards from some 40 yards but the ball wouldn’t find the target. After some delaying tactics from both camps, the final whistle came with no further score. FT 2-1

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

We’ll start this week with the Wyvern League who start their campaign in earnest in the next few days. So by way of an introduction, the number of Clubs competing this year has risen from 33 to 40, proof again of the growing stature of the League. The increase is explained by the inclusion of eleven new Clubs and, sadly, the departure of five of last season’s Clubs. We are sorry to lose, Bosham, East Cowes Victoria, Moneyfields, Salisbury and Ringwood Town and wish them well in their new pastures. To accommodate the increase in numbers the Premier Division has been increased to 15 whilst the East has 13 and West Division has 12. The two Cup Competitions will continue as before. The PREMIER DIVISION will contain all of the Clubs from last season, with the exception of the departed Moneyfields and Salisbury, plus six additions. Baffins Milton Rovers, Horndean and Fareham Town move up from the East Division and Downton and Totton & Eling will do likewise from the West Division. The final addition is Gosport Borough who re-join the League.

DIVISION ONE EAST contains seven from last season together with Colden Common, who transfer from the West Division, and five new Clubs in Fleetlands, Hayling United, Infinity, Liphook United and Midhurst & Easebourne. The Senior Side of the last named play in the Southern Combination League, formerly known as the Sussex County League. DIVISION ONE WEST has just six sides from last season and no fewer than six newcomers – Bashley, Hamworthy United, the returning Laverstock & Ford, Lyndhurst, QK Southampton and Sway. A warm welcome to all the new Clubs and we wish them well in their new surroundings.

The newly sponsored Southern League Premier Division got under way yesterday, former members Poole Town opened their account with a 4-1 win at Farnborough with Ollie Dennett notching a hat trick for the Dolphins. Another hat trick man was Lerone Plummer who helped Blackfield & Langley to a similar result on the road at Yate Town. Gosport Borough also off the mark with a 3-0 win at Privett Park over Somerset side Taunton Town. The First Division has yet to get under way, although there was some involvement in the FA Cup yesterday.

WEEK TWO ROUND UP

THE Extra Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup dominated the weekend’s fixtures and with four replays in the coming week there are still seventeen Sydenhams League sides involved in the Competition. There were nine all-Wessex ties with a number of ties between Premier Division Clubs. Alresford and Baffins will be one of the replays after a goalless draw at Arlebury Park but no such problems for Christchurch who were the day’s highest scorers with a 7-2 success at Amesbury. Kyle Graham led the way with a hat trick and Jake King weighed in with two with the result meaning that the Wiltshire Club have conceded twelve goals in their two home fixtures to date. AFC Stoneham continued their fine start to the season with a two goal win at Brockenhurst. which earns them a trip to Winchester in the next round, while Lymington experienced few problems on the Island with a 4-0 win at Cowes. Steve Flynn was off the mark again and Adam Costello notched his first goal for the Club. Matt Steer scored twice in Hamworthy United’s three goal win over Bashley while Portland’s Jamie Symes topped that with all three goals for Portland in their victory over Solent University at a windswept Test Park. There was one tie involving Division One Clubs with last season’s relegated duo of Bemerton Heath and Andover New Street sharing six goals at Western Way with six different names on the scoresheet, and two “inter-Division” ties. Hythe & Dibden confirmed their early promotion credentials with a two all draw at AFC Portchester but Romsey found Hamble Club too strong at the Bypass ground as Nathan Lynch scored three in the Monks five one victory, a result that gives then a home tie with near neighbours Sholing in the next round. So to the seven ties against “foreign” opposition which resulted in three wins, three defeats and one replay. On the credit side Bournemouth came from behind to defeat Combined Counties side Frimley Green 2-1 and Horndean, with five different scorers, beat Camberley from the same League 5-3 at Fiveheads Park. The best of the three wins was probably Fareham’s lone goal victory at high flying Western League Westbury with Will Harris the man on target. The replay in question will be at the Memorial Ground at Farnham after Fleet came from behind to draw two apiece with their local rivals. US Portsmouth came very close to upsetting Hellenic League Binfield in Berkshire before two late goals saw the home side through and there were five goals, all in the first half, at Shaftesbury but sadly four of them were scored by Combined Counties visitors Knaphill. Finally to use a phrase beloved by television, in the late game a goal fifteen minutes from time from Dan Mason gave Sholing victory over Tadley before an attendance of 162. No Premier Division fixtures but six in Division One. Ringwood moved to the top of the table with a two goal win at Pewsey Vale – Ryan Hamm on target again – and Newport claimed their first victory of the season with a lone goal from Connor Kelly giving them the points at Andover Town. Not a lot of goals generally on the day in the division but Downton bucked the trend with a 4-2 win over Alton with Robbie Owen scoring twice on his debut. New Milton and Laverstock & Ford shared two goals and the points while Petersfield inflicted East Cowes Vics with a second defeat of the season when winning by the

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS odd goal in three at Love Lane. Finally there was only one goal at Whitchurch with Craig Rutledge’s strike giving the home side victory over Fawley AFC. Disappointing to see so many sides declining to provide the attendances for the Cup ties while Downton and Pewsey were “guilty” in Division One. Please!!! Finally mention of two former Sydenhams Clubs, Blackfield & Langley played their inaugural game in the Southern League Premier Division South and won 4-1 at Yate Town with a hat trick from Rudy Plummer while , who have climbed the Pyramid over recent years, made the six hundred mile round trip to Barrow and lost 2-0. On such days are there sneaking thoughts of the Wessex League!
