Dear Student, Welcome to Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. Nature of Service provided: We are an Older Persons Community Mental Health Team covering the areas of New Milton, Lymington, Ringwood and Fordingbridge. We also offer a liaison service to Lymington New Forest Hospital and Fordingbridge hospital. Our patients are generally over the age of 65, although there are exceptions to this based primarily on the needs of the patient. The role of the CMHT is to assess, treat and manage both functional and organic disorders. We work closely with the physical health team and also Adult Services. We are organised into patches which cover each of these areas. These are based on catchment areas of GP surgeries. It is through GP’s that we receive the majority of our referrals. Car driver desirable. Description of the teams / professionals who work there: The team consists of Consultant Psychiatrists, a Specialist Doctor in Psychiatry, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Specialist Care Home In-Reach Nurse/Nurse Prescriber, Memory Nurses, Health Care Support Workers and an Occupational Therapist. The learning opportunities in our area: Learning about Mental health illnesses and how they affect the elderly and their families/carers. Spending time with the professionals within the team and also having time out with the district nurses, therapist, Adult Services and various voluntary sector organisations that include The Alzheimer’s Society The Dementia Advice Service and The Princess Royal Trust. Shift patterns for our area: Monday – Friday 09:00 to 17:00 Our facilities: The town of New Milton is approximately a mile from The Becton Centre. Barton on Sea, sea front is within walking distance of the building. On site there are facilities to make hot drinks. There is also a microwave and a toaster. You would need to bring your own food with you. How to dress: Smart casual. You are not required to wear a uniform, but please remember that you are going out in to the community and visiting people in their own homes. You must maintain a professional appearance. Consider how you would want someone to dress if they were visiting you in a professional capacity. You must wear your ID card at all times during working hours and it should be clearly on display when you are visiting patients. Guidance and policies to be aware of: Confidentiality and Information Governance. We have access to patients’ private and personal information. Safer Staffing and Lone Working - Please make sure that our administration team have your mobile phone number so that you can be contacted. It is also important for us to have this as part of our safer staffing and lone working policies. This number would only be given to members of our team and only with your prior knowledge. Safer Staffing – It is the responsibly of each member of the team to call in ‘safe’ to the duty clinician after their last visit of the day and by 16:45. Failing to do so will result in a phone call from the manager and a possible call to the police if contact is not made. As a student you are still responsible for making sure you are marked as ‘safe’. DO NOT FORGET TO CALL IN SAFE. Other relevant policies and guidance will be discussed with you on your induction.
