La mostra, prendendo spunto dalla storica “Mostra d’arte umbra” organizzata nel 1907, ri- propone, con grande impatto visivo, la sorprendente ricchezza di forme d’arte che fiorirono in Umbria tra Medioevo e Rinascimento. Nella versione attualizzata della mostra sono pre- senti più di 100 opere dei più grandi artisti del periodo, provenienti da tutta la regione: musei comunali, istituzioni ecclesiastiche e collezioni private, così che tutta l’Umbria sarà davvero in mostra! L’ALTRA GALLERIA Opere dai depositi della Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria 23 settembre 2018 / 6 gennaio 2019 La mostra farà conoscere, dopo decenni di assenza dal circuito espositivo, una selezione di opere appositamente restaurate, che si conservano nei depositi della Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria. Si tratta di capolavori dell’epoca d’oro della scuola umbra, dalla fine del Duecen- to alla metà del Cinquecento, che permettono di ampliare il percorso espositivo. The exhibition, is inspired by the historical exhibition Mostra d’antica arte umbra organized in 1907. This new exhibition re-proposes the amazing wealth of art forms appeared in Umbria between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The new exhibition collects more than 100 pieces of the most important artists of this period coming from the entire regional territory: local museums, ecclesiastical institutions and private collections so that Umbria will really be an exhibition! THE OTHER GALLERY Works from the storage vaults of the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria 23 September 2018 / 6 January 2019 The exhibition will disclose a selection of important restored pieces which are kept in the deposits of the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria. The exhibition “14th Century Masterpieces. From the workshop of Giotto to the Spoleto School”, explores the extraordinary historical period spanning from the end of the thirteenth century to the mid-fourteenth century, a time when Umbria was bursting with political, reli- gious, social, and cultural activity. Reconstructing the corpus of works by such anonymous masters as the Master of Palazze, the Master of Sant’Alò, the Master of San Felice di Giano, the Master of Cesi, the Master of San Ponziano, The Master of the Crucifix of Trevi, the Master of the Crucifix of Visso, and the Master of Fossa – artists who were often simulta- neously both painters and sculptors – serves to highlight a painting school which is currently little-known, yet of great cultural interest. The exhibition also bears witness to the vitality of the Apennine Mountain region where the school developed, an area which was hit hard by a recent earthquake. There are four sections specifically on Umbria and two more general chapters of introduction and conclusion. The introductory chapter examines the most important issues for the history of the Italian regions in this period and the extent to which they are relevant to Umbria, given the type of evidence that survives. The chapter focuses on the concept of state formation, and the information about it provided by evidence for urbanisation, coinage, and the creation of treaties. The second chapter looks at the archaeological and other available evidence for the history of Umbria before the Roman conquest, and maps the beginnings of the formation of the state through the growth in social complexity, urbanisation and the emergence of cult places.

It is a deep- water limestone carrying an unparalleled historical record of the Late Cretaceous and Palaeogene, undisturbed by erosional gaps. The Scaglia is a pelagic sediment largely composed of calcareous plankton (calcareous nannofossils and planktonic foraminifera), the best available tool for dating and long-distance correlation. In the 1970s it was recognized that these pelagic limestones carry a record of the reversals of the magnetic field. Abundant planktonic foraminifera made it possible to date the reversals from 80 to 50 Ma, and subsequent studies of related pelagic limestones allowed the micropalaeontological calibration of more than 100 Myr of geomagnetic polarity stratigraphy, from ca 137 to ca 23 Ma. Some parts of the section also contain datable volcanic ash layers, allowing numerical age calibration of the reversal and micropalaeontological time scales. The reversal sequence determined from the Italian pelagic limestones was used to date the marine magnetic anomaly sequence, thus putting ages on the reconstructed maps of continental positions since the breakup of Pangaea. The Gubbio Scaglia also contains an apparently continuous record across the CretaceousÐTertiary boundary, which was thought in the 1970s to be marked everywhere in the world by a hiatus.
