The closest airport is in Perugia (28km; 30’) but the terminals in Florence, Rome, Bologna and Pi- sa are equally convenient. The main farmhouse (400 sqm – 4,304 sqft, 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms) is laid over two floors and includes a total of six apartments, each made up of living area with cooking corner, double bedroom and bathroom. The guesthouse N°1 (115 sqm – 1,237 sqft, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms) hosts two independ- ent apartments, both on the ground floor and made up of living area with kitchen, double bedroom and bathroom. These units were created taking into account the needs of disabled guests. Right next to the pool there is finally a dressing room/warehouse (20 sqm – 215 sqft). The buildings are surrounded by roughly 10,000 sqm of park, dotted by olive trees, fruit trees, roses and other decorative plants. Not far from the farmhouse there is the 13.5 × 7.5 m swim- ming pool, surrounded by a stone-paved solarium with sun beds and umbrellas. From the park, one can enjoy a suggestive view over the Umbrian countryside and the Apennines. The estate, beyond the park, covers a total of roughly 6.6 hectares registered as arable land. The property is currently working as an Agriturismo, thanks to its quiet and retired position. Being close to the most beautiful cities and Umbria is definitely a bonus, as well as the presence of an ample park and a pool for the guests. Much of those first days together involves providing you with necessary information, settling into your accommodations, introducing you to one another, the staff, the city and to Italy. From arrival day August 31st to September 11th, there are activities and group meetings scheduled, most of which are required or highly suggested. Don’t worry: there will be plenty of time to explore the city and travel in Italy and Europe. Your first two weeks, however , will be occupied with official orientation. We will be ready to welcome you on Wednesday, August 31st starting at 10:00AM. If you plan on arriving in Rome before August 31, you will want to consider some of the lower cost hotels listed in the accommodation section of the John Felice Rome Center (JFRC) webpage. Let us know you’ve arrived so we can anticipate your coming to JFRC when doors are ready to open. You will probably want to have about €200 cash in hand for a variety of activities. It may be easiest to exchange dollars with your bank in the US or at the Airport when you arrive. Because of all the Orientation week activities, you may find you are strapped for cash, and bank machines for Euro currency are not always nearby. During these first days, there will be two optional Orientation meals which are partially subsidized by the JFRC, offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis compares Umbria before and after the Roman conquest in order to assess the impact of the imposition of Roman control over this area of central Italy. There are four sections specifically on Umbria and two more general chapters of introduction and conclusion. The introductory chapter examines the most important issues for the history of the Italian regions in this period and the extent to which they are relevant to Umbria, given the type of evidence that survives. The chapter focuses on the concept of state formation, and the information about it provided by evidence for urbanisation, coinage, and the creation of treaties. The second chapter looks at the archaeological and other available evidence for the history of Umbria before the Roman conquest, and maps the beginnings of the formation of the state through the growth in social complexity, urbanisation and the emergence of cult places.
