    JOHN FELICE ROME CENTER Fall Orientation Schedule 2011 General Background Information: Each year, and each semester, we begin a new and exciting series of events and trips with a new group of students coming from all over the US. Much of those first days together involves providing you with necessary information, settling into your accommodations, introducing you to one another, the staff, the city and to Italy. From arrival day August 31st to September 11th, there are activities and group meetings scheduled, most of which are required or highly suggested. Don’t worry: there will be plenty of time to explore the city and travel in Italy and Europe. Your first two weeks, however , will be occupied with official orientation. We will be ready to welcome you on Wednesday, August 31st starting at 10:00AM. If you plan on arriving in Rome before August 31, you will want to consider some of the lower cost hotels listed in the accommodation section of the John Felice Rome Center (JFRC) webpage. Let us know you’ve arrived so we can anticipate your coming to JFRC when doors are ready to open. You will probably want to have about €200 cash in hand for a variety of activities. It may be easiest to exchange dollars with your bank in the US or at the Airport when you arrive. Because of all the Orientation week activities, you may find you are strapped for cash, and bank machines for Euro currency are not always nearby. During these first days, there will be two optional Orientation meals which are partially subsidized by the JFRC, offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis compares Umbria before and after the Roman conquest in order to assess the impact of the imposition of Roman control over this area of central Italy. There are four sections specifically on Umbria and two more general chapters of introduction and conclusion. The introductory chapter examines the most important issues for the history of the Italian regions in this period and the extent to which they are relevant to Umbria, given the type of evidence that survives. The chapter focuses on the concept of state formation, and the information about it provided by evidence for urbanisation, coinage, and the creation of treaties. The second chapter looks at the archaeological and other available evidence for the history of Umbria before the Roman conquest, and maps the beginnings of the formation of the state through the growth in social complexity, urbanisation and the emergence of cult places.

Seguendo la geografia regionale si è arrivati a Trevi e Campello sul Clitunno con la fascia olivata, quindi a Norcia, con lo scenario di Forca Canapine, a Narni con il Parco Fluviale sul Nera, a Terni con i resti archeologici di Carsulae e i “Libri in cammino” sui Monti Martani, ad Assisi con il Monte Subasio e ancora ai suggestivi vigneti del Sagrantino e del Grechetto.

    2514 HOSPITALS BEHAVIOR DURING THE SEPTEMBER 1997 EARTHQUAKE IN UMBRIA AND MARCHE (ITALY) A DE SORTIS 1, G DI PASQUALE2, G ORSINI3, T SANO4, S BIONDI5, C NUTI6 And L VANZI7 SUMMARY Some of the hospitals in the area of the seismic sequence in Umbria and Marche (Italy), started on September 26 1997, have been inspected in order to identify the most frequent malfunctioning causes and the most opportune measures to improve their seismic performance, which is of key importance for emergencies management. A brief description of the structural damages and the functional response of the hospitals short after the earthquake are presented. First hints for the repair of the damaged parts and for the improvement of the system for future events are drawn. INTRODUCTION The effects on the hospitals system of the Umbria and Marche seismic sequence started on September 26th 1997 confirmed the low safety of these infrastructures, which in previous earthquakes in Italy and abroad behaved badly both for structural response and for disaster management procedures. The biggest part of the hospitals was evacuated after the second shock of September 26 1997, at 11:00 a.m.; the evacuation was caused both by actual loss of functioning, even in places modestly struck, and by the panic of hospitals patients and employees, justified by the length and intensity of the seismic sequence. Important damages were generally found in the structures and installations of both old hospitals (due to their age and structural complexity) and of recent r.c. ones. These structures were built without specific regard to seismic problems, because most of this area was included in the seismic classification during the years 1982-84.

In this enchantment of nature, in this place so rich in traditions and history, guests can spend pleasant days of relaxation and fun.
