LESSON OVERVIEW This lesson was designed based on the 5E instructional model1 (Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, Evaluate) and it combines aspects of traditional formal education with game-based learning to teach science, technology, and Grade Levels: engineering concepts to students. 6 – 9 Moonbase Alpha is an online game, developed Subjects: through a partnership between the NASA Learning Technologies Program (LTP) and commercial game Physical Science and developers, which serves as a proof-of-concept to Earth Science demonstrate that NASA content – lunar architecture Lesson Duration: in this case – and a cutting-edge game engine can be combined to produce a fun game that inspires Four 90-minute class interest in STEM education. In Moonbase Alpha, meetings commercial-quality gaming technology is combined with accurate physics rendering and real NASA technology to provide a virtual world that can be used to deepen students’ understanding of key concepts and improve their teamwork skills. In the game scenario, a meteorite strikes a lunar outpost on the Moon, disabling critical systems that supply oxygen to the astronauts’ living quarters. Teams of students will be challenged to repair the damaged systems in order to restore oxygen production capability to the lunar outpost. During the ENGAGE section of the unit, students will participate in a class discussion about lunar exploration, followed by an introduction to Moonbase Alpha and a brief demonstration of the game by the teacher. In the EXPLORE section, students will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the game using its free-play mode. Students will learn about the Moon, energy, gravity, life support systems, and the Engineering Design Process through class discussions and by completing independent research. In the EXPLAIN section, students will discuss their research findings within topic groups and present their answers to the class. In the EXTEND section, students will be asked to consider how the concepts they have learned can be applied to the challenge presented in Moonbase Alpha. Students will work in teams to develop strategies for restoring oxygen to the lunar settlement in preparation for playing the game in competitive (timed) mode. After completing the challenge in Moonbase Alpha’s competitive mode, students EXTEND their thinking as they discuss and record what they have learned and modify 1 Appendix A contains the full web addresses corresponding to all hyperlinks in this educator guide. In the EVALUATE section of the lesson, students discuss what they have learned about science, engineering, and teamwork within their groups and with the class. The Engineering Design Process is integrated throughout the unit, providing a uniting theme through all of the lessons, and it is reinforced as the students work together to develop and implement a strategy for successfully completing the mission in Moonbase Alpha. Each section of this lesson includes suggested time allotments which were developed based on 90 minute class periods; however, time allotments can be adjusted to fit the needs of various class schedules. Essential Questions What is solar energy and how can it be used on the Moon? Is gravity different on Earth than on the Moon and are there different gravitational forces for different objects? Why or why not? What types of energy are present on the Moon? How can the Engineering Design Process be used to solve real-world problems? Instructional Objectives Students will: Learn about lunar exploration and why it is important for the future of space exploration; Learn about gravity, how it impacts motion on the Moon, and how it is different on the lunar surface than it is on Earth; Learn about energy sources, energy transformations, and how energy relates to supplying oxygen to a lunar settlement; Use the Engineering Design Process to repair damaged systems that produce oxygen for the living quarters for astronauts on a lunar settlement in the game Moonbase Alpha; Investigate multiple strategies to complete the challenge; Use multimedia resources, such as interactive software with graphical interfaces, to demonstrate their proficiency in the use of technology. Moon Observations The months as we know them (January, February, etc.) are solar, based on how many days it takes the earth to revolve around the sun, roughly divided by twelve. A moon-th, or lunar (moon) month, is based on how long it takes the moon to orbit around the earth. The phases (shapes) of the moon change according to its cycle as it rotates around the earth, and the position of the moon with respect to the rising or setting sun. This cycle lasts about 29 ½ days. A (moon) month starts on “day one” with a new moon. The sun and the moon are in the same position and rise and set together. We can’t see the new moon. New Moon The moon rises and sets roughly 50 minutes later each day. The moon appears to “grow” or it waxes each day from a new moon to a full moon. The waxing moon’s bright side points at the setting Waxing sun and can be seen in the late afternoon on a clear day. Crescent A crescent moon is between new and half (less than half full), and may be waxing or waning. First Quarter The half-moon waxing or first quarter moon occurs about a week after the new moon.

From Earth, the lit portion we see of the moon waxes (grows) and wanes (shrinks). Captain George Vancouver's survey of the North Pacific coast of America has been characterized as being among the most distinguished work of its kind ever done. For three summers, he and his men worked from dawn to dusk, exploring the many inlets of the coastal mountains, any one of which, according to the theoretical geographers of the time, might have provided a long-sought-for passage to the Atlantic Ocean. Vancouver returned to England in poor health,1 but with the help of his brother John, he managed to complete his charts and most of the book describing his voyage before he died in 1798.2 He was not popular with the British Establishment, and after his death, all of his notes and personal papers were lost, as were the logs and journals of several of his officers.     Glossary Glossary Albedo A measure of an object’s reflectivity. A pure white reflecting surface has an albedo of 1.0 (100%). A pitch-black, nonreflecting surface has an albedo of 0.0. The Moon is a fairly dark object with a combined albedo of 0.07 (reflecting 7% of the sunlight that falls upon it). The albedo range of the lunar maria is between 0.05 and 0.08. The brighter highlands have an albedo range from 0.09 to 0.15. Anorthosite Rocks rich in the mineral feldspar, making up much of the Moon’s bright highland regions. Aperture The diameter of a telescope’s objective lens or primary mirror. Apogee The point in the Moon’s orbit where it is furthest from the Earth. At apogee, the Moon can reach a maximum distance of 406,700 km from the Earth. Apollo The manned lunar program of the United States. Between July 1969 and December 1972, six Apollo missions landed on the Moon, allowing a total of 12 astronauts to explore its surface. Asteroid A minor planet. A large solid body of rock in orbit around the Sun. Banded crater A crater that displays dusky linear tracts on its inner walls and/or floor. 250 Basalt A dark, fine-grained volcanic rock, low in silicon, with a low viscosity. Basaltic material fills many of the Moon’s major basins, especially on the near side. Glossary Basin A very large circular impact structure (usually comprising multiple concentric rings) that usually displays some degree of flooding with lava. The largest and most conspicuous lava- flooded basins on the Moon are found on the near side, and most are filled to their outer edges with mare basalts.

Within the context of chemically evolved igneous suites, 122 REE deposits have been identified as being associated with intrusive dike, granitic pegmatites, carbonatites, and alkaline igneous rocks, including A-type granites and undersaturated rocks. These REE resource minerals are not unlimited and with a 5–10% growth in global demand for REEs per annum, consideration of other potential REE sources and their geological and chemical associations is warranted. The Earth’s moon is a planetary object that underwent silicate-metal differentiation early during its history. Following ~99% solidification of a primordial lunar magma ocean, residual liquids were enriched in potassium, REE, and phosphorus (KREEP). While this reservoir has not been directly sampled, its chemical signature has been identified in several lunar lithologies and the Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT) on the lunar nearside has an estimated volume of KREEP-rich lithologies at depth of 2.2 × 108 km3.

    Exploration of the Moon The physical exploration of the Moon began when Luna 2, a space probe launched by the Soviet Union, made an impact on the surface of the Moon on September 14, 1959. Prior to that the only available means of exploration had been observation from Earth. The invention of the optical telescope brought about the first leap in the quality of lunar observations. Galileo Galilei is generally credited as the first person to use a telescope for astronomical purposes; having made his own telescope in 1609, the mountains and craters on the lunar surface were among his first observations using it. NASA's Apollo program was the first, and to date only, mission to successfully land humans on the Moon, which it did six times. The first landing took place in 1969, when astronauts placed scientific instruments and returnedlunar samples to Earth.     Bright as The Full Moon: How Much to Light Up The Night? While all of our other senses function as well at night as during the day (or perhaps sometimes even more sharply), our eyesight is limited in its low-light capabilities. For tens of thousands of years, our ancestors were restricted in their ability to function between evening and morning twilight. The light from the flames of burning materials -- from sticks, to animal and vegetable fats, to natural fossil fuels -- extended their functionality into the night, especially in enclosed areas. Outdoors, another light source was commonly made use of to conduct activity outdoors at night: moonlight. We find references to the use of moonlight for nocturnal activity in many places in both the historic record and in folk wisdom. The moon provides its most substantial illumination of the landscape at the time of full moon (see below); full moons are particularly associated with nocturnal activity. The name "Harvest Moon", for the full moon occurring nearest to the autumnal equinox, refers to the fact that the moonlight at that time is bright enough (and moonrise occurs in conjunction with sunset) to allow harvesters in the northern hemisphere to continue their work in the fields into the night. The same effect gives us the name of the following full moon, the Hunter's Moon. Moonlight gardens, designed to be enjoyed during the night, were enjoyed in the orient for centuries; the 17th Century Taj Mahal in India featured a large garden meant to be visited during the cool of night.
