Preparing for the future: A description of client music preferences and musical preparedness of music therapists by Nathan A. Mensah, MT-BC A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement For the Master of Arts Degree Master of Arts in Music Therapy Program in the Departments of Graduate Studies and Music and Theatre Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana May, 2019 Abstract Music therapists often use client-preferred music in order to build rapport with clients, decrease their anxiety, increase relaxation, and increase overall efficacy of music interventions. The American Music Therapy Association states music therapists are required to play a wide variety of genres for use in sessions. Client’s musical tastes have grown diverse due to music streaming, and some music therapists may not have the musical skills necessary to recreate these styles in sessions. Currently, there is no data to show which genres and music styles are most commonly requested by their clients, or data to show which genres music therapists feel musically prepared or unprepared to use in sessions. A survey was used to collect data from board-certified music therapists to ask about which genres their clients most commonly request, as well as which genres they feel musically prepared using in sessions. The survey’s findings were that client’s most frequently requested Children’s, Classic Country, Classic Rock, Gospel, Hymn, Oldies, and Pop Music. Respondents reported to feeling most musically prepared to use genres that were most frequently requested by their clients. Music therapists reported not feeling musically prepared to use genres associated with World Music cultures or genres requiring use of electronic or synth- based instruments such as Bachata, EDM, Funk, Heavy Metal, Hip Hop/Rap, J-Pop, K-Pop, Latin Hip Hop/Latin Rap, Latin Pop, Merengue, Punk, Reggaeton, Salsa, Ska, Trap, and Video Game Music. -

Mix Includes Exclusive Track by Dancehall Star Mavado Jamaica
NIKE RELEASES ASAFA POWELL’S TRAIN FOR SPEED WORKOUT ON ITUNES Mix Includes Exclusive Track by Dancehall Star Mavado Nike and Olympic sprinter Asafa Powell have teamed up with Reggae label VP Records to create a Nike Sport Music workout featuring the exclusive track, “On The Go (Faster Than Bullet),” by one of the athlete’s favorite artists, Mavado. Called Asafa Powell: Train for Speed, the 35-minute interval workout is coached by Asafa over a reggae/dancehall soundtrack. Among the genre-defining songs included on the mix are some of reggae’s greatest artists of the past, present, and future, providing a musical backdrop for running that is both unique and effective. After all, two of Jamaica’s greatest exports are music and sprinters—it was only a matter of time before they came together in one pulse-pounding project. The only athlete to have run the 100-meter dash in under 9.8 seconds more than once (he did it five times), Asafa Powell knows speed. He has distinguished himself as one of the world’s fastest humans, having held the world record in the 100 for three years, from 2005-2008. In the Asafa Powell: Train for Speed workout, Asafa coaches runners through a 35-minute training session with four high-speed intervals that descend in length. The goal of the workout is to increase an athlete’s endurance and speed, with musical motivation coming from the athlete’s homeland. Reggae music is often associated with laid-back island rhythms, but there are several subgenres that up the tempo to a runner’s pace, including dancehall, a style that has been influential on hip-hop since its inception. -

Contact: [email protected] Choutouts: Language contact and US-Latin hip hop on YouTube Matt Garley This paper presents a corpus-sociolinguistic analysis of lyrics and com- ments from videos for four US-Latinx hip hop songs on YouTube. A ‘post-varieties’ (Seargeant and Tagg 2011) analysis of the diversity and hybridity of linguistic production in the YouTube comments finds the notions of codemeshing and plurilingualism (Canagarajah 2009) useful in characterizing the language practices of the Chicanx community of the Southwestern US, while a focus on the linguistic practices of com- menters on Northeastern ‘core’ artists’ tracks validate the use of named language varieties in examining language attitudes and ideologies as they emerge in commenters’ discussions. Finally, this article advances the sociolinguistics of orthography (Sebba 2007) by examining the social meanings of a vast array of creative and novel orthographic forms, which often blur the supposed lines between language varieties. Keywords: Latinx, hip hop, orthography, codemeshing, language contact, language attitudes, language ideologies, computer-mediated discourse. Choutouts: contacto lingüístico y el hip hop latinx-estadounidense en YouTube. Este estudio presenta un análisis sociolingüístico de letras de canciones y comentarios de cuatro videos de hip hop latinx-esta- dounidenses en YouTube. -
Spanglish Code-Switching in Latin Pop Music: Functions of English and Audience Reception
Spanglish code-switching in Latin pop music: functions of English and audience reception A corpus and questionnaire study Magdalena Jade Monteagudo Master’s thesis in English Language - ENG4191 Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages UNIVERSITY OF OSLO Spring 2020 II Spanglish code-switching in Latin pop music: functions of English and audience reception A corpus and questionnaire study Magdalena Jade Monteagudo Master’s thesis in English Language - ENG4191 Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages UNIVERSITY OF OSLO Spring 2020 © Magdalena Jade Monteagudo 2020 Spanglish code-switching in Latin pop music: functions of English and audience reception Magdalena Jade Monteagudo http://www.duo.uio.no/ Trykk: Reprosentralen, Universitetet i Oslo IV Abstract The concept of code-switching (the use of two languages in the same unit of discourse) has been studied in the context of music for a variety of language pairings. The majority of these studies have focused on the interaction between a local language and a non-local language. In this project, I propose an analysis of the mixture of two world languages (Spanish and English), which can be categorised as both local and non-local. I do this through the analysis of the enormously successful reggaeton genre, which is characterised by its use of Spanglish. I used two data types to inform my research: a corpus of code-switching instances in top 20 reggaeton songs, and a questionnaire on attitudes towards Spanglish in general and in music. I collected 200 answers to the questionnaire – half from American English-speakers, and the other half from Spanish-speaking Hispanics of various nationalities. -
Creolizing Contradance in the Caribbean
Peter Manuel 1 / Introduction Contradance and Quadrille Culture in the Caribbean region as linguistically, ethnically, and culturally diverse as the Carib- bean has never lent itself to being epitomized by a single music or dance A genre, be it rumba or reggae. Nevertheless, in the nineteenth century a set of contradance and quadrille variants flourished so extensively throughout the Caribbean Basin that they enjoyed a kind of predominance, as a common cultural medium through which melodies, rhythms, dance figures, and per- formers all circulated, both between islands and between social groups within a given island. Hence, if the latter twentieth century in the region came to be the age of Afro-Caribbean popular music and dance, the nineteenth century can in many respects be characterized as the era of the contradance and qua- drille. Further, the quadrille retains much vigor in the Caribbean, and many aspects of modern Latin popular dance and music can be traced ultimately to the Cuban contradanza and Puerto Rican danza. Caribbean scholars, recognizing the importance of the contradance and quadrille complex, have produced several erudite studies of some of these genres, especially as flourishing in the Spanish Caribbean. However, these have tended to be narrowly focused in scope, and, even taken collectively, they fail to provide the panregional perspective that is so clearly needed even to comprehend a single genre in its broader context. Further, most of these pub- lications are scattered in diverse obscure and ephemeral journals or consist of limited-edition books that are scarcely available in their country of origin, not to mention elsewhere.1 Some of the most outstanding studies of individual genres or regions display what might seem to be a surprising lack of familiar- ity with relevant publications produced elsewhere, due not to any incuriosity on the part of authors but to the poor dissemination of works within (as well as 2 Peter Manuel outside) the Caribbean. -
