  • The Impact of High Fashion PR in the Creation of a Fashion Editorial Image
The Impact Of High Fashion PR In The Creation Of A Fashion Editorial Image. By: Isabelle Pandeya Department of Fashion Studies Institution of Cultural Sciences Lund University MODK63, 15 credits. Bachelor Thesis, Spring 2019 Supervisor: Joacim Sprung !1 Abstract Brand owners protect their brands by setting policies through their public relations departments. The PR policies control how magazines communicate their brands to the public. This study examines the aesthetical values and impact of a brand owner’s public relations policies on fashion editorial images. In particular, fashion editorial images are analyzed to detect and assess the influence of high fashion public relations on the creation of the image. Three images of the French high fashion brand Givenchy are subjected to a social semiotic visual analysis, ”Zoe Kravitz, Unretouched”, by Harper’s Bazaar US October 2018, which showcases the policies in regards to haute couture. ”Full-Look Policy” by CR Fashion Book Issue 14 2019, openly communicates a PR policy, which made this image important to the study. ”An American in Paris” by British Vogue May 2012, is used to demonstrate how the PR policies are implemented in the context of an older fashion editorial image, when Givenchy’s previous creative director Riccardo Tisci was at the helm. The analysis is further deepened with an interpretation with the help of a theoretical framework spanned by Roland Barthes, Dana Thomas and Yuniya Kawamura’s perspectives. One of the findings of this study is that a brand’s public relations and fashion magazines act as gatekeepers of fashion, and participate in the value creation of brands.

This thesis applies the sociology of humour to fashion to develop a concept of wit that contributes to further understanding fashion. The thesis argues that this concept of wit is characterised by qualities of surprise and seduction. Surprise is defined as the experience of an unexpected, creative intellectual insight expressed in a pithy manner; seduction is the experience of being led astray, and also the desire of the subject to be led astray. The thesis demonstrates the presence of empirical sites of wit within fashion in the form of the dandy and glamour. It utilises Thomas Carlyle’s Sartor Resartus [2000] (1836) to further conceptualise the wit of fashion at the intersection of theories of humour and theories of fashion. The contribution of the wit of fashion to classical texts in the sociology of fashion

THE FASHION GROUP FOUNDATION PRESENTS FALL / WINTER 2014/2015 TREND OVERVIEW BY MARYLOU LUTHER N E W Y O R K • LONDON • MILAN • PARIS PHOTO COLLAGE BY ASHLEY SEARS The global-ness and seasonless-ness of the clothes and accessories for Fall/Winter 2014/2015, whereby one woman’s winter is another woman’s summer and one woman’s dollar is another woman’s cent, accounts for the fashion diversity ahead. Just as mash-ups and fusions exist in music and art, and remakes and revivals persist in television, film and theater, this all-in-the-mix mindset prevails in fashion. As our collage here illustrates, furs and leathers, tweeds and knits, sneakers and T-straps all speak to the this-and-that mindset of the moment. The world-wide insetuousness for intarsia/patchwork/collage/inlays is fashion’s expression of the congruity of incongruity. Anything, anywhere, any time. Even lengths are inclusive: A mini here, a maxi there, a mid-length almost everywhere. And often these divergent lengths are offered in one collection. TEXTING. Texture is the instant fashion message of the season, and one of the few send-alls. The new dimensional fabrics include everything from tweeds to hand-wovens, puffers, feathers, fringes, ruffles, jewels and embroideries, all effected in transmogrifications that are truly original. Case in point: Gareth Pugh’s dimensional coats. Lady Gaga told US Weekly that the Pugh dress she was wearing last month was made of coffee filters. Pugh told us that while it might CHANEL GARETH PUGH look like coffee filters, it’s actually “a fine gauge interfacing, cut into thousands of tiny strips, ruffled and then applied one after another into a calico ground.” KNITS.

  • Steve Mcqueen Interviews Kanye West”, Interview Magazine, January 22, 2014
Steve McQueen, “Steve McQueen Interviews Kanye West”, Interview Magazine, January 22, 2014 What's there left to say about Kanye West? Certainly, West himself would have plenty to say. After all, he's the guy who, during an NBC telethon to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina, proclaimed, off script, that "George Bush doesn't care about black people." He's the guy who stormed the stage at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and announced that his good friend Jay-Z's significant other, Beyoncé, should have won the prize just bestowed upon the perpetually in faux-awe Taylor Swift. He's the guy who, in front of the large fabricated-mountain set on his recent "Yeezus" tour, has alternately taken aim at Hedi Slimane, Bernard Arnault, François-Henri Pinault, and Nike; likened himself to Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, and Michelangelo; embarked on a long and winding monologue about Lenny Kravitz (at which Kravitz was present); and asked Google head Eric Schmidt to invest in his design firm Donda (named after West's late mother)—all while still retaining the level-eyed insight to hold Le Corbusier and Q-Tip as inhabitors of similarly lofty creative planes. A lot of it, of course, is just old-fashioned "I'm the Alpha with no Omega" hip-hop theater. But some of it seems to emanate from some deeper, less performative place for West. Lest we forget that before he was a pop-star polymath, he was an in-demand producer whose aspirations to become a rapper in his own right were thoroughly and consistently dismissed by the very people who were profiting from his skills as a songwriter and beat- maker.
