4 The Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg was founded in 1993 and is one of the youngest state universities in Germany. However, some faculties have a much longer tradition, especially the faculty of engineering. Today, the University of Magdeburg has about 18,000 students in nine faculties. It is named after the physicist and former mayor of Magdeburg, Otto von Guericke, famous for his research, especially his experiments with the "Magdeburg hemispheres". At the University of Magdeburg, students can choose from 92 degree programmes in various areas of study and specialisation. The conditions for students are ideal, with modern laboratories and experimental workshops equipped with high-performance computers and an excellent staff–student ratio. The offer of a sound, thorough education combining a high level of theoretical expertise with practical experience makes Magdeburg an attractive choice. Special emphasis is placed on close cooperation between teaching staff and students.

University location Magdeburg is the capital as well as the largest city of the state of Saxony-Anhalt in Germany. Magdeburg is situated on the Elbe River. It was one of the most important medieval cities of Europe and still has to offer a lot, especially for students.
