The Professionalisation of the Royal Navy: 1660-1688 by Samantha Middleton The thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY of the University of Portsmouth September 2020 Abstract This thesis analyses the developments made between 1660 and 1688 that contributed towards the Royal Navy becoming a more professionalised organisation. It outlines the impact of individuals and their methods towards achieving professionalisation. The political and financial problems facing the navy before the restoration of the monarchy are also addressed. Biographical case studies of three influential naval reformers; James Stewart, The Duke of York; William Coventry; and Samuel Pepys are used to demonstrate the significant influence that they had on the process of professionalization. This thesis ascertains that although the terminology had not been invented at this stage, the principles of Management Control were implemented by Pepys, Coventry and the Duke of York as a method of organizational professionalisation, identifying examples of performance measurement, rewards systems and the implantation of standard operating procedures. An in-depth analysis of the Duke of York’s instructions for the duties of the Principal Officers demonstrates that the Duke of York introduced enhanced accounting procedures and additional control mechanisms to reduce abuses and increase administrative efficiency. Additionally, a set of professional responsibilities has been created within this thesis for Coventry, whose role as secretary is absent from the instructions. This shows for the first time, that Coventry identified his professional remit as focusing primarily on retrenchment and the reduction of abuses. This contributed towards wider professionalisation. -

William Wilberforce: Triumph Over Britain’s Slave Trade Abigail Rahn Senior Division Historical Paper Words: 2499 Rahn 1 History has shown that the road to societal change is often paved with hardship and sorrow. The fight to end the British slave trade was a poignant example of the struggles to reach that change. The British slave trade thrived for over two centuries and was responsible for transporting 3.4 million slaves, mainly to Spanish, Portuguese, and British colonies.1 This horrific institution was permeated with misery, corruption, and cruelty. The conditions on the ships were abhorrent. The male captives were shackled together below deck, unable to move, and forced to lie in their own filth.2 The women were allowed some mobility and stayed on deck but were exposed to sexual harassment.3 Yet the appalling trade was “as accepted as birth and marriage and death.”4 It was not until William Wilberforce decided to combat slavery within Parliament that slaves had true hope of freedom. William Wilberforce’s campaign against the British slave trade, beginning in 1789, was a seemingly-endless battle against the trade’s relentless supporters. His faith propelled him through many personal tragedies for nearly two decades before he finally triumphed over the horrific trade. Because of Wilberforce’s faith-fueled determination, the slave trade was eradicated in the most powerful empire in the world. After the trade was abolished, Wilberforce fought for emancipation of all slaves in the British empire. He died just days after the House of Commons passed the act to free all slaves, an act that owed its existence to Wilberforce’s relentless fight against the slave trade.5 1Clarkson, Thomas. -

E 376M l Early Black Atlantic Instructor: Woodard, H Unique #: 35690 Semester: Spring 2019 Cross-lists: n/a Flags: Cultural Diversity in the U.S.; Writing Restrictions: n/a Computer Instruction: No Prerequisites: Nine semester hours of coursework in English or rhetoric and writing. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course focuses primarily on representations of race in select eighteenth-century writings, art, and music. Focusing primarily on early Black Atlantic writings--especially in the U.S. and England, coterminously with the triangular, Transatlantic Slave Trade route, the course shows how race disrupts the rhetoric of Enlightenment humanism, which represents literature as a tool for moral instruction. What unites neoclassicists like Dryden, Pope, and Swift; Whig modernists like Addison & Steele, and Christian humanists like Samuel Johnson is a belief in art as a postlapsarian response to disharmony in the universe. The publications of early (18th century) Black Atlantic authors, Ukawsaw Gronniosaw (Narrative of Ukawsaw Gronniosaw, 1770), Ottobah Cugoano (Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil of Slavery, 1789), Ignatius Sancho (Letters of the Late Ignatius Sancho, 1782), Olaudah Equiano (Narrative of Olaudah Equiano, 1787), and Mary Prince (History of Mary Prince, 1831) alter the notion that such a literary didacticism operates in a depoliticized humanist framework. Across the Atlantic, John Jea, John Morrant, Jupiter Hammon, Briton Hammon, and Phillis Wheatley perform a key epistemological task, notably in religious, social, literary, and gender contexts. Besides, Britain's exploration ventures to African territories, along with its participation in the Transatlantic Slave Trade, helped to shape perspectives on race that often clashed with humanism's didactic mode. -

eSharp Issue 10: Orality and Literacy Literacy and the Humanizing Project in Olaudah Equiano’s The Interesting Narrative and Ottobah Cugoano’s Thoughts and Sentiments Jeffrey Gunn (University of Glasgow) [A]ny history of slavery must be written in large part from the standpoint of the slave. (Richard Hofstadter, cited in Nichols 1971, p.403) The above statement suggests two sequential conclusions. The first implication is that the slave is in an authoritative position to present an authentic or alternative history of slavery beyond the ‘imperial gaze’ of Europeans (Murphy 1994, p.553). The second implication suggests that the act of writing empowers the slave. Literacy is the vehicle that enables the slave to determine his own self-image and administer control over the events he chooses to relate while writing himself into history. Throughout my paper I will argue that the act of writing becomes a humanizing process, as Olaudah Equiano and Ottobah Cugoano present a human image of the African slave, which illuminates the inherent contradictions of the slave trade.1 The slave narratives emerging in the late eighteenth century arose from an intersection of oral and literary cultural expressions and are evidence of the active role played by former black slaves in the drive towards the abolition of the African slave trade in the British Empire. Two of the most important slave narratives to surface are Olaudah Equiano’s The interesting narrative of the life of Olaudah 1 I will use the term ‘African’ to describe all black slaves in the African slave trade regardless of their geographical location.
