BOOKS, Air crashes Air Crashes: What went wrong, why, and what can be done about it. Collins, Richard L. 1992. 244 pp. safety, accidents, weather, air crashes, aeronautics. Elliott BOOKS, Biography Baa Baa Black Sheep. Boyington, Gregory “Pappy”. 1987. 350 pp. biography, P-40, F4-U Corsair, history, air warfare, fighters, World War II, China, South Pacific. Gregory “Pappy” Boyington (December 4, 1912 – January 11, 1988) was a U.S. Marine Corps officer and a fighter ace with 26 kills during World War II. He was awarded the and the Navy Cross. Boyington was a Marine officer, but he became a civilian to fly against with the “Flying Tigers” (P-40s) in China. He later became a Marine again and commanded the VMF-214 squadron (“The Black Sheep Squadron”) flying F4-U Corsairs in the South Pacific. “Pappy,” who was older than his men, was a hard-drinking man who liked to wrestle, but he was a great leader and his squadron scored many victories using unusual tactics. Boyington was shot down on Jan. 3, 1944, then captured by a Japanese submarine. He was a “special prisoner” in Japan until the end of the war, but he was not acknow-ledged by the Japanese as a POW during his captivity. This very personal account shows that he liked to kill Japanese planes and pilots, but he did not hate the Japanese personally, finding many good qualities in some he met while a prisoner. He learned to speak Japanese. Later he struggled with alcoholism for years. He admitted that he was more sober and healthier as a prisoner, despite an uneven diet. The Black Sheep got together with Greg after the war and celebrated. They weren’t the “screwballs & misfits” portrayed in the entertaining and highly fictionalized 1970s TV show, which was loosely based on this book. This is the story of a complex man, with lots of good air combat stories and deep insights. Owner: EAA 429. Donor: William R. Elliott Billy Mitchell: Crusader for Air Power. On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed a remarkable emergency landing when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger skillfully glided US Airways Flight 1549 onto the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. His cool actions not only averted tragedy but made him a hero and an inspiration worldwide. Highest Duty is Sully's story—a story of dedication, hope, and preparedness, revealing the important lessons he learned through childhood, in his military service, and in his work as a commercial airline pilot. It reminds us all that, even in these days of war, tragedy, and economic uncertainty, there are values still worth fighting for—that life's challenges can be met if we're ready for them. More books have probably been written about the 8th Air Force than all other WWII USAAF Air Forces combined. The latest 8th AF book, by Martin Bowman, takes a somewhat fresh approach to the subject, blending first-hand combat accounts with color photographs of B-17 interiors/exteriors and the equipment used by Flying Fort crewmen.

Each chapter in Bowman's book describes a crew position (navigator, pilot, ball gunner, etc.), telling that individual's duties and environment followed by one or more narratives by actual 8th AF personnel who served in that capacity. Though some of the history and photos have been seen before, Bowman includes enough new material to make the book worthwhile. Likewise the color photos of flak vests, , A-2 jackets, helmets, etc. give an immediacy to those long-ago warriors. Owner: EAA 429. B-24 Combat Missions. Martin Caidin, famous pilot and aviation historian, combines technical details with first-hand stories by test and combat pilots in recounting the history of the P-38. Highly researched and entertaining to read. The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a fast World War II fighter. Developed in 1937-1939 to a U.S. Army Air Corps requirement as an interceptor of high-altitude , the P-38 had two Allison engines on twin booms and a single, central nacelles con- taining the cockpit and armament. Named “fork-tailed devil” (der Gabelschwanz-Teufel) by the Luftwaffe and “two planes, one pilot” (Ni hikoki, ichi pairotto) by the Japanese,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_P-38_Lightning the P-38 was used in dive bombing, level bombing, ground attack, night fighting, photo-reconnaissance missions,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_P-38 _Lightning and as a long-range escort fighter when equipped with drop tanks. The P-38 was used most successfully in the Pacific Theater of Operations and the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations as the mount of America’s two top aces, (40 victories) and Thomas McGuire (38 victories). In the Southwest Pacific theater, the P-38 was the primary long-range fighter of the Air Force until the appearance of large numbers of P-51D Mustangs toward the end of the war. The P-38 could hit 425 mph or more, and it was the first airplane to encounter the “compressibility” problem in fast dives, in which the controls froze, the dive oversteepened, and pilots often crashed when the tail ripped off. Some could come out of the dive with an outside loop. Many solutions were tried, then special “dive stall flaps” were developed to break the airstream vise on the control surfaces. Then the problem went away. The P-38 was unusually quiet for a fighter, the exhaust muffled by the turbo-superchargers. It was very forgiving, and could be mishandled in many ways. With hydraulically boosted controls its roll rate improved greatly over the early versions, which rolled too slow to excel as a dogfighter in Europe. The P-38 was the only American in production throughout American involvement in the war, from Pearl Harbor Aviation Library, EAA Chapter 429, Jefferson City, MO, 3/10/2015, Page 8

The story of their survival and the stunning efforts undertaken to save them are the crux of Lost in Shangri-La, Mitchell Zuckoff’s remarkable and inspiring narrative. Faced with the potential brutality of the Dani tribe, known throughout the valley for its violence, the trio’s lives were dependent on an unprecedented rescue mission--a Aviation Library, EAA Chapter 429, Jefferson City, MO, 3/10/2015, Page 9

dedicated group of paratroopers jumped into the jungle to provide aid and medical care, consequently leaving the survivors and paratroopers alike trapped on the jungle floor. A perilous rescue by plane became their only possible route to freedom. A riveting story of deliverance under the most unlikely circumstances, Lost in Shangri-La deserves its place among the great survival stories of World War II. --Lynette Mong Owner: EAA 429. Serling, Robert J. 1991. 168 pp. forensic and engineering mystery, airplane development, air crashes, safety, turboprop, whirl mode. This rare book is an excellent technical and journalistic account of the powerful Lockheed L-188 Electra, the first turbo-prop airliner. Two airliners crashed when a wing tore off. Exhaustive testing proved that the plane was structurally strong in rough air and high-G maneuvers, but no one foresaw “whirl mode,” a combination of the harmonic frequency of the outboard propeller and wing at cruise speed. If turbulence weakened the nacelle structure, the prop acted as an unstable gyroscope, transmitting different frequencies to the wing. This could lead to matching harmonic frequencies, metal fatigue, and rapid separation of the wing. The plane was upgraded and the problem vanished. The revised “Super Electra” served airlines for many years and it is still a great cargo plane today. A forensic and engineering mystery, this is good reading even when you know the outcome. This is the classic book (reprinted) about the Doolittle Raid in 1942. After Pearl Harbor, America seemed to have lost the war before it had begun. Allied forces were being beaten across the Pacific by the Japanese military juggernaut, and morale was at the breaking point. America desperately needed to strike back at the enemy. For this, a corps of heroic volunteer fliers led by Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle began training to attack the very heart of the Japanese Empire — Tokyo.

To succeed, the "Tokyo Raiders" would have to launch sixteen fully loaded B-25 twin-engine medium bombers off the deck of the Hornet — something never done before — and land at airfields in China. Through courage and luck, the raid itself went flawlessly. But bad weather, lack of fuel, and darkness worked against many of the pilots — and for many, escaping China proved even more perilous than the mission....

This gripping eyewitness account — hailed as "the most stirring story of individual heroism that [the war] has so far produced" (The New York Times) — is one of the most daring missions in military aviation history: the legendary Doolittle Raid. Dogfights Dogfights is a military aviation themed TV series depicting historical re-enactments of air-to-air combat that took place in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, as well as smaller conflicts such as the Gulf War and the Six-Day War. The program, which airs on the History Channel, consists of former fighter pilots sharing their stories of actual dogfights in which they took part, and uses computer- generated imagery (CGI) to give the viewer a better perspective of what it is like to partake in aerial combat[1] The series premiered on November 3, 2006. Owner: EAA 429. Donor: EAA 429 Dogfights: the Complete Season Two. Arts & Entertainment. 2007. 13:19. history, air warfare, dogfights, fighter planes. In each episode, a true historical dogfight is played out. Pilots from the actual fights are brought in to re-tell their accounts of the battle. Along with the battle, there are occasional scenes that describe the pilot's living conditions and events that have happened outside the battle. Each battle is told by the pilot and a special narrator. CGI effects are used, providing a realistic simulation. Also, the show describes the planes. It takes some time to describe their advantages and disadvantages. It also describes air maneuvers and stunts pulled off by pilots. Usually, the battles told are the ones won by the American side of each war. Occasionally, there are other enemies brought into a dogfight, rather than planes. Sometimes, the pilots have to destroy ship fleets, or bomb enemy air fields, but the process is interrupted by enemy planes. After each battle, the show usually gives each pilot a short biography about future battles they might fight in, and then the credits roll.

The B-25 was amazingly versatile, serving many roles as bomber, ground attack aircraft, patrol, and photo reconnaissance. More B-25s were built than any other twin-engine American warplane. The famous Doolittle Raid on Japan in 1942 was led by 16 B-25s launched from the carrier Hornet. North American adopted many requests from the field, and B-25s were retrofitted with many machine guns and even a 75 mm cannon for ground attack. In the island-hopping campaigns in the South Pacific they dropped parachute bombs and skipping bombs for low- level attacks on the Japanese. Owner: EAA 429. Donor: William R. The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress is a 1944 documentary film which ostensibly provides an account of the final mission of the crew of the Memphis Belle, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. In May 1943 it became the first U.S. Army Air Forces heavy bomber to complete 25 missions over Europe and return to the United States.[1] The dramatic 16 mm color film of actual battles was made by cinematographer First Lieutenant Harold J. Tannenbaum. The film was directed by Major William Wyler, narrated by Eugene Kern, and had scenes at its Bassingbourn base photographed by Hollywood cinematographer Captain William H. Clothier. It was made under the auspices of the First Motion Picture Unit, a branch of the United States Army Air Forces. The film actually depicted the next to last mission of the crew (see below) on May 15, 1943, and was made as a morale- building inspiration for the Home Front by showing the everyday courage of the men who manned these bombers. [Missouri River Regional Library, not in EAA 429 library]. This film, narrated by Hal Holbrook, reveals the important role gliders played in World War II during several major invasions, especially the D-Day invasion at Normandy. Many glider pilots were private pilots who volunteered, others were newly trained by the Army. Every mission was risky, usually landing at night in enemy-held territory. 6,000 pilots and co-pilots flew large, unarmed gliders into battle. Most flew the Waco CG-4A, of which nearly 14,000 were built. With a wingspan of nearly 84 ft., an empty weight of 3,900 lb., and a max. gross weight of 7,500 lb., the CG-4A could carry 13 troops and their equipment. Cargo could be a Jeep, a 75 mm howitzer, or a ¼ ton trailer, loaded through the upward-hinged nose section. C-47s and a few C-46s were used as tow aircraft. The glider stalled at 49 mph and cruised at 73 mph, just above the C-47’s stall speed of 67. The sink rate was 400 ft./min. at the tactical glide speed of 60 mph. The landing run was 600-800 ft. for three-point landings, but rolls of 2,000 to 3,000 ft. were common at higher gross weights—plenty of time to wreck or get impaled on the poles placed in fields by Nazi troops. Thousands of lives were saved and battles won because of their efforts. In fact, one pilot interviewed said the 'G' in their emblem didn't stand for glider; it stood for “guts.” These pilots were finally recognized for their bravery many years after the war. The film's title alludes to Winston Churchill's speech describing The Battle of Britain’s aircrews: “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” The name was changed for US distribution. Aviation engineer and designer R.J. Mitchell was the subject of the “bio-pic.” The First of the Few used footage of the Supermarine Spitfire prototype as well as scenes of early series production types.

Plot A newsreel sets the scene for summer 1940, showing Nazi advances in Europe with England facing invasion and aerial attacks on the island increasing. On 15 September 1940, during the Battle of Britain, RAF Squadron Leader Geoffrey Crisp (David Niven), the station commander of a Spitfire squadron, recounts the story of how his friend, R.J. Mitchell (Leslie Howard) designed the Spitfire fighter. His pilots listen as Crisp begins with the 1922 Schneider Trophy competition, where Mitchell began his most important work, designing high speed aircraft. While watching seagulls with his binoculars, he envisages a new shape for aircraft in the future. Crisp, an ex-First World War pilot seeking work, captivates Mitchell with his enthusiasm and the designer promises to hire him as test pilot should his design ever go into production. Facing opposition from official sources, Mitchell succeeds in creating a series of highly successful seaplane racers, eventually winning the Schneider Trophy outright for Great Britain. After a visit to Germany in the late 1930s and a chance meeting with leading German aircraft designer Willy Messerschmitt, Mitchell resolves to build the fastest and deadliest fighter aircraft. Convincing Henry Royce of Rolls-Royce that a new engine, eventually to become the famous Rolls-Royce Merlin is needed, Mitchell has the powerplant he requires. Faced by the devastating news that he has only one year to live and battling against failing health, Mitchell dies as the first prototype Supermarine Spitfire takes to the skies. (In fact, Mitchell died over 15 months after the first flight). Crisp ends his account when the squadron is scrambled to counter a German attack, voicing a thanks to Mitchell for creating the Spitfire. Owner: William R. Elliott (home). Donor: William R.
