Boyington, Gregory “Pappy”. 1987. 350 pp. biography, P-40, F4-U Corsair, history, air warfare, fighters, World War II, China, South Pacific. Gregory “Pappy” Boyington (December 4, 1912 – January 11, 1988) was a U.S. Marine Corps officer and a fighter ace with 26 kills during World War II. He was awarded the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. Boyington was a Marine officer, but he became a civilian to fly against Japan with the “Flying Tigers” (P-40s) in China. He later became a Marine again and commanded the VMF-214 squadron (“The Black Sheep Squadron”) flying F4-U Corsairs in the South Pacific. “Pappy,” who was older than his men, was a hard-drinking man who liked to wrestle, but he was a great leader and his squadron scored many victories using unusual tactics. Boyington was shot down on Jan. 3, 1944, then captured by a Japanese submarine. He was a “special prisoner” in Japan until the end of the war, but he was not acknow-ledged by the Japanese as a POW during his captivity. This very personal account shows that he liked to kill Japanese planes and pilots, but he did not hate the Japanese personally, finding many good qualities in some he met while a prisoner. He learned to speak Japanese. Later he struggled with alcoholism for years. He admitted that he was more sober and healthier as a prisoner, despite an uneven diet. The Black Sheep got together with Greg after the war and celebrated. They weren’t the “screwballs & misfits” portrayed in the entertaining and highly fictionalized 1970s TV show, which was loosely based on this book. This is the story of a complex man, with lots of good air combat stories and deep insights. Owner: EAA 429. Donor: William R. Elliott Billy Mitchell: Crusader for Air Power. My Search For What Really Matters. Sullenberger, Chesley “Sully” with Jeffrey Zaslow. 2009. 340 pp. biography, air crashes, Miracle on the Hudson 2009. Aviation Library, EAA Chapter 429, Jefferson City, MO, 3/10/2015, Page 3 On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed a remarkable emergency landing when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger skillfully glided US Airways Flight 1549 onto the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. His cool actions not only averted tragedy but made him a hero and an inspiration worldwide. Highest Duty is Sully's story—a story of dedication, hope, and preparedness, revealing the important lessons he learned through childhood, in his military service, and in his work as a commercial airline pilot. It reminds us all that, even in these days of war, tragedy, and economic uncertainty, there are values still worth fighting for—that life's challenges can be met if we're ready for them.
