I would contend that in the last six years the fund has become a stable state institution and a partner of equal standing to similar institutions abroad. Through stabilized, compound financing, support for all kinds of genres and formats, independence and transparency in grant adjudication, and not least through the high level of funding provided to minority (and other) co-production films over the last three years, the fund has been able to help Czech producers collaborate on attractive European projects. For the third year now, the Czech Film Fund has included the Czech Film Center, which cooperates with international festivals, consults programmers about current Czech films, and recommends films for potential inclusion in programs. Hence, the Czech Film Center works with films that the fund has financed from the outset, from the initial screenplay, to development, and through to production. The Czech Republic may be a small country, but it is a great one. -

LA NOUVELLE VAGUE TCHÈQUE... ET APRÈS RÉTROSPECTIVE 29 NOVEMBRE - 4 JANVIER Éclairage intime UN CINÉMA EXORBITÉ Entre 1963 et 1969, le cinéma tchèque, emmené par une jeune génération de cinéastes, connaît un jaillissement de vitalité sans précédent. Entre un réa- lisme fortement teinté d’ironie et le goût de la métaphore, cette Nouvelle Vague accompagne et aiguillonne les bouleversements alors en cours dans la société tchécoslovaque. « À ce moment-là, mon pays était comme une planète qui, par un étrange concours de circonstances, avait quitté son orbite et suivait sa propre trajectoire dans l’espoir incertain de rejoindre une autre orbite plus proche du soleil. » Milan Šimečka Certaines images ont la force des commencements. Quand il descend dans la fosse du Semafor, célèbre théâtre musical de ces années-là, pour y filmer l’audi- tion de jeunes chanteuses avides de décrocher le rôle qui les sortira de leur ano- nymat d’étudiante ou de vendeuse, Miloš Forman en ramène la peur et l’élan, la beauté miroitant dans la maladresse, le tumulte des espoirs. Forman tourne ce film, Concours, en 1963. La Tchécoslovaquie est alors arrimée depuis quinze ans au bloc soviétique. Au stalinisme implacable des années 1950 a succédé, malgré les promesses de changement, un statu quo mortifère. Mais sous les slogans toujours ronflants, l’idéologie se lézarde. Pendant les années qui suivent, le cinéma tchèque sera le symptôme continu des métamorphoses LA NOUVELLE VAGUE TCHEQUE… ET APRÈS TCHEQUE… VAGUE LA NOUVELLE d’un système dans l’impasse bousculé par l’impatience de la jeunesse. Il accom- pagnera le mouvement d’un pays tout entier dans une aventure d’émancipation qui aboutira en 1968 au Printemps de Prague.
