1 Professor Martin Votruba
Professor Martin Votruba (1948-2018) Michael J. Kopanic, Jr. It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of an outstanding teacher, a dear friend and an esteemed colleague, Professor Martin Votruba. He served as the Head of Slovak Studies Program and was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh (Slavic Department, Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences). Many considered him to be the country's leading scholar on Slovak culture. Martin died on November 23, 2018 after a short bout with lung cancer, even though he never smoked. Votruba's passing was a shock to the academic and Slovak-American community. As his long-time secretary and friend Chris Metil related, "Martin was an invaluable member of the department, a teacher, scholar, and friend. He is greatly missed. He was the rock that built the Slovak program", the only one of its kind in the United States. He assisted in sending many of his students to study Slovak at Studia Academica Slovaca, the Slovak language summer school at Comenius University in Bratislava. The University of Pittsburgh is the only university in the United States that offers a Slovak studies minor. His death was surprising, since as recently as November 4, he had just presented his informative lecture at the University of Pittsburgh's Annual Slovak Heritage Festival: "Slovaks Facing the Revolts of 1848: Between Imperial Vienna and Combative Budapest." Votruba had looked thinner and more frail than the last time I saw him, but he delivered a superb presentation, and as usual, interacted well with the audience and addressed questions with enthusiasm and his breadth of knowledge. -

Also in this brochure, you will find brief information about Slovakia as a filming location or co-production partner, general statistical data and a description of the system and amounts of state sup- ‹ port. We believe it will serve as a helpful guide for producers looking for partners in Slovakia, for buyers of TV shows, and programmers of film festivals and showcases. Leafing through the publication, you will find that after significant growth of production in 2008 and 2009, the year 2010 is marked by ma- jor decrease. This is due to the fact that the last applications for support from the Grant System of the Slovak Ministry of Culture were submitted in winter 2008 and the first grants from the newly founded Audiovisual Fund, which is expected to double the volume of funds for the support of audiovisual production, will be distributed to applicants only in the second quarter of 2010. -

1 The Prague Spring It was much more than ice hockey, of course. It was a replay of a lost war. It started with an uprising, but it ended with a hockey game. Around 4:30 on the morning of August 21, 1968, a black Volga limousine, its bulbous, large headlights leading the way, sped from the Soviet embassy in Prague toward Czech Communist Party headquarters. Over the years, the black Volga limousine had become mythologized throughout Eastern Europe as the vehicle commonly involved in the abduction of citizens. In the early morning, thisCOPYRIGHTED particular Volga was trailed MATERIAL by a convoy of Soviet tanks. When the convoy arrived at Communist Party headquarters, operations forces sealed the premises and cut off all phone con- tact with the outside world. With that done, a group of Soviet troops armed with machine guns entered the offi ce of Alexander Dubcek, who just six months earlier had been selected as fi rst secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. CC01.indd01.indd 1 33/27/12/27/12 112:032:03 PPMM 2 Breakaway Although a Soviet colonel had initially entered the offi ce, where Dubcek was meeting with members of his cabinet, it was two plainclothes offi cers—one old, one young—sporting tweed jackets and open-neck shirts who initiated the dialogue as soldiers stood by the door, machine guns in tow. “Comrade Dubcek,” they respectfully addressed him. “You are to come with us straight away.” “Who are you, what do you want?” Dubcek replied. By the time Dubcek and his colleagues were placed under arrest and escorted by KGB agents to a barracks in the Carpathian Mountains in what is now Ukraine, Operation Danube had over- taken Czechoslovakia. -
Programme Presentation
CinEast 2019 – programme presentation I. GENERAL PRESENTATION Since 2008, the CinEast festival (the Central and Eastern European Film Festival in Luxembourg) has contributed significantly to cultural diversity in Luxembourg by presenting some of the best films and art that Central and Eastern European countries have to offer. Since its first edition, the festival has grown considerably in its scope and diversity of programmes and has attracted a broader audience each year. In 2018, the festival screenings and other events attracted a total of around 10 400 people. The festival programme is complemented by a variety of special events, bringing together different forms of art (music, photography, literature, etc.), thus promoting cultural exchange and friendship through meetings, debates, food and music. It also presents a rare occasion for audiences in Luxembourg to learn about and experience the cultures of the countries represented in a broader sense. The festival is supported by several partners, including the City of Luxembourg, the Ministry of Culture, Cinémathèque, Neimënster, Kinepolis group, Film Fund Luxembourg, our main sponsors Docler Holding and Kulczyk Investments, as well as the embassies and cultural and film institutes of the countries represented. II. KEY FEATURES IN 2019 The 12th edition of the CinEast festival will take place from 3 to 20 October 2019 and will feature over 120 screenings (65 feature- length films and around 50 short films), as well as numerous accompanying events, including concerts, ciné-debates, two exhibitions, culinary events, special evenings and the CinEast Pro co-production forum. Besides the main festival venues in the City of Luxembourg – the Cinémathèque, Neimënster and Ciné Utopia – screenings will also take place at the Ancien Cinéma in Vianden, and other cinemas around the country (Kulturfabrik in Esch-sur-Alzette, CNA in Dudelange, Rumelange and Mondorf-les-Bains). -
