    AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN UTTARAKHAND ABSTRACT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF Boctor of $I)tlas(opt)p IN GEOGRAPHY BY MUMTAJ AHMAD Under the Supervision of Dr. Shamsul Haque Siddiqui ( Reader) DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2002 ABSTRACT The study region of the present research work, Uttarakhand comprising eight districts namely, Nainital, Almora, Pithoragarh of Kumaun, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Tehri-Garhwal, Pauri-Garhwal and Dehradun of Garhwal division. It extends from 28°43'24" and 31°27'30" N latitude and 77°34'27" and 80°7'22" E longitudes. It encompasses an area of 51,125 square kilometres and account total population of 5.926 million (according to Census of India 1991). The eocnomy of this region depends on agriculture, where more than 80 per cent of its population dependent upon this source. Being a hilly area, there is scarcity of agricultural land and the share of per capita cultivated land is very low. The present study is carried out for the period from 1979-80 to 1994-95. It is based on secondary soruces of data. There are the following techniques have bene used by the author for the analysis of the present study as follows. i) The physical setting of Uttarakhand has been described in detail. ii) To examine the trends of agricultural development, trend lines have been plotted with the help of regression equation Y = a + bX, regression lines make it possible to show the exact change in area and production of different crops. iii) To assess the development of agriculture by the diffusion of technological and institutional factors per thousand hectares of cultivated land has been opted for the analysis of agricultural mechanization i.e.

Drawing on qualitative research conducted between 2006 and 2008 in the Aglar valley of Jaunpur, a rural mountain block in the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand state, north India, I show how education serves as a pivotal practice and discourse through which modern development is constituted, reproduced and negotiated as an individual experience and social trajectory of improvement and change. Education is embedded in a long-standing modernist vision of being and becoming, but through the lens of critical ethnography, I examine how this vision takes on lived meanings in a particular context. In Jaunpur, school education is seen as key to mobility and improvement through employment and educated dispositions, and for futures without agrarian, manual labor. I use the term ‘education-as-development’ to capture how school education and development are interwoven as projects of postcolonial governance and as sites for the social construction of modernity. I thus locate education in the broader dynamics and cultural politics of development, showing how notions of inclusion and exclusion are structured by and reproduce middle class valorization and rural dispossession.

You can be taking yoga classes at an ashram in Rishikesh and white-water rafting down the Ganges one day, trekking in the shadow of the Himalayas the next. Walk with pilgrims to ancient (UTTARANCHAL) (UTTARANCHAL) UTTARAKHAND UTTARAKHAND temples near the source of Ganges and Yamuna Rivers, or take puja (offering or prayers) with thousands of devotees on the ghats at Haridwar. Put your feet up and relax in Raj-era hill stations, or ride an elephant and take your camera on a hunt for tigers at Corbett or Rajaji National Parks. If you get your timing right, it’s all possible in Uttarakhand. This is a region where nature takes control – rolling forest-clad hills, snow-topped 6000m peaks, rivers, waterfalls, lakes and glaciers. The state is 90% hills and 80% forest. The sacred Ganges River, which rises at Gaumukh Glacier in the far north, winds its way down to the plains via the significant pilgrimage centres of Gangotri, Rishikesh and Haridwar. The British, fleeing the oppressive heat of the plains in summer, built enduring hill stations in the Himalayan foothills with Raj-style houses, hotels, churches and boarding schools that still exist. Mussoorie and Nainital have a real holiday atmosphere year-round and distant Himalayan views. Further north, the high Himalaya attracts trekkers, mountaineers and skiers as well as pilgrims on the Char Dham and Hem Kund routes. But it’s Rishikesh that draws most foreign tourists for its ashrams, yoga, meditation and all-round spirituality.
