Between Arcadia and Crete: Callisto in Callimachus’ Hymn to Zeus The speaker of Callimachus’ Hymn to Zeus famously asks Zeus himself whether he should celebrate the god as “Dictaean,” i.e. born on Mt. Dicte in Crete, or “Lycaean,” born on Arcadian Mt. Lycaeus (4-7). When the response comes, “Κρῆτες ἀεὶ ψεῦσται” (“Cretans are always liars,” 8), the hymnist agrees, and for support recalls that the Cretans built a tomb for Zeus, who is immortal (8-9). In so dismissing Cretan claims to truth, the hymnist justifies an Arcadian setting for his ensuing birth narrative (10-41). Curiously, however, after recounting Zeus’s birth and bath, the hymnist suddenly locates the remainder of the god’s early life in Crete after all (42-54). The transition is surprising, not only because it runs counter to the previous rejection of Cretan claims, but also because the Arcadians themselves held that Zeus was both born and raised in Arcadia (Paus. 8.38.2). While scholars have focused on how the ambiguity of two place names (κευθμὸν... Κρηταῖον, 34; Θενάς/Θεναί, 42, 43) misleads the audience and/or prepares them for the abrupt move from Arcadia to Crete (Griffiths 1970 32-33; Arnott 1976 13-18; McLennan 1977 66, 74- 75; Tandy 1979 105, 115-118; Hopkinson 1988 126-127), this paper proposes that the final word of the birth narrative, ἄρκτοιο (“bear,” 41), plays an important role in the transition as well. This reference to Callisto a) allusively justifies the departure from Arcadia, by suggesting that the Arcadians are liars not unlike the Cretans; b) prepares for the hymnist’s rejection of the Cretan account of Helice; and c) initiates a series of heavenly ascents that binds the Arcadian and Cretan portions of the hymn and culminates climactically with Zeus’s own accession to the sky. -

P U B L I S H E R’ S P R E F A C E. THE fourth edition of Nothing New Press’ reprint of The Story of the Greeks has seen the following changes and additions to the 1896 edition of Guerber’s fine history: The beginning chapters, especially chapters I-V, were completely rewritten and much material and additional chapters added. The prominent historical philosophy of Guerber’s day was that modern man and modern civilization, such as that established by the Greeks, grew up from men who dwelt in caves as little better than animals, and that a great passage of time was necessary before the first men, the ancestors of the Greeks, learned to cook meat with fire, build homes, make clothes, and do the other basic work of family and community, much less civilization. This understanding was re- flected in the opening chapters of The Story of the Greeks, as she described the pre- Greek inhabitants of the peninsula, the Pelasgians, as savage cave-dwellers who de- voured their meat raw. In Guerber’s history, without the benefit of the advanced civili- zations of the Egyptians and the Phoenicians, who sent colonies to Greece, these natives would still be wearing animal skins! We now know, of course, that this was not the case, and that the history of the first peoples in the earth was accurately recorded in Genesis, the most ancient written record that mankind possesses. A very different history emerges from the pages of this book. Genesis records that man was created a civilized being, who from the beginning intelli- gently used language, kept records, and built homes, and within his first generations, developed arts, sciences, and industries, and established societies and civilizations. -

Winter iii Abstract: In the Renaissance, the bodies of individuals were understood as guides to their internal identities, which influenced the public understanding of the figure represented in art—be it in terms of politics, personal life, or legacy. The classicizing and religious paintings by Titian (c. 1488/90-1576) show the subject’s state of being, at a particular moment in a story, through the use of body language. The body is a vehicle for narrative that demonstrates the sitter’s identity, relating the intricacies of the body to both the mind and the story. By exploring the humanist combination of philosophical theories regarding the relationship between the soul and the body, it is clear that Titian used these concepts to elevate the human figures in his narrative paintings. Formal analysis and Renaissance artistic theories by Alberti and others suggest that Renaissance artists operated under the assumption that how their sitters appeared was tantamount to representing their identities. Current scholarship has not yet considered this particular relationship in Titian’s works. -

A HISTORY OF THE PELASGIAN THEORY. FEW peoples of the ancient world have given rise to so much controversy as the Pelasgians; and of few, after some centuries of discussion, is so little clearly established. Like the Phoenicians, the Celts, and of recent years the Teutons, they have been a peg upon which to hang all sorts of speculation ; and whenever an inconvenient circumstance has deranged the symmetry of a theory, it has been safe to ' call it Pelasgian and pass on.' One main reason for this ill-repute, into which the Pelasgian name has fallen, has been the very uncritical fashion in which the ancient statements about the Pelasgians have commonly been mishandled. It has been the custom to treat passages from Homer, from Herodotus, from Ephorus, and from Pausanias, as if they were so many interchangeable bricks to build up the speculative edifice; as if it needed no proof that genealogies found sum- marized in Pausanias or Apollodorus ' were taken by them from poems of the same class with the Theogony, or from ancient treatises, or from prevalent opinions ;' as if, further, ' if we find them mentioning the Pelasgian nation, they do at all events belong to an age when that name and people had nothing of the mystery which they bore to the eyes of the later Greeks, for instance of Strabo;' and as though (in the same passage) a statement of Stephanus of Byzantium about Pelasgians in Italy ' were evidence to the same effect, perfectly unexceptionable and as strictly historical as the case will admit of 1 No one doubts, of course, either that popular tradition may transmit, or that late writers may transcribe, statements which come from very early, and even from contemporary sources. -

122 William Sale THE STORY OF CALLISTO IN HESIOD The onIy thorough investigation into the myth of Callisto was done in 1890 by Reinhold Franz, who sought, among other things, to recover a form of the story which he could attribute to Hesiod 1). By "Hesiod" he meant the author of the Eoeae or Catalogue 0/ Women, "and the version of the myth which he 2 considered Hesiodic is tailored to fit this work or works ); "that is, it does not end with the catasterism of Callisto, the familiar scene in which Zeus changes her to the Great Bear. Other scholars have been reluctant to sever the catasterism from the rest, and have therefore argued that the story belongs to the Astronomy, another part of the Hesiodic corpus 3). And in Rzach's edition we find a rather detaiied account of Callisto 4 assigned to the Astronomy as fragment 181 ). Recently J. Schwartz has taken an extremely skeptical position: Callisto was mentioned and her story perhaps told in the Catalogue, but we cannot recover this story; in the Astronomy she was not to be found, and the Great Bear was there called Helice (Schwartz pp. 126n., 258). MElAMPOUS AND EPIMENIDES: TWO GREEK PARADIGMS OF THE TREATMENT OF MISTAKE PHILIPPE BORGEAUD One might think of rituals in general as being treatments of an orig inal mistake. From this viewpoint the Promethean crisis, as developed by Hesiod both in his Theogony and in his Works and Days, and as it is prolonged by the Greek tradition transmitted in the Library of the Pseudo-Apollodorus, is particularly eloquent. Starting with a trick concerning the distribution of meat between mortals and immortals, in a world still deprived of an essential distinction between gods and human beings, a world still ignorant of transcendence, the story recounts stroke and counterstroke (stealing of fire, invention of woman hood, necessity of work, and setting, so to say, of the human condi tion), unto what could have been the end of the story: the flood, the cataclysm by which Zeus decides, apparently, to reduce humanity to the status of animality, if not to destroy it altogether. The result, thanks to a last trick of Prometheus, is nothing else than the establish ment of religion (Pseudo-Apollodorus, Library I, 7,2, translated by Sir James Frazer): "Deucalion (the Greek Noah, son of Prometheus) by the advice of Prometheus constructed a chest, and having stored it with provisions he embarked in it with Pyrrha (his wife, daughter of Pandora). But Zeus by pouring heavy rain from heaven flooded the greater part of Greece, so that all men were destroyed, except a few who fled to the high mountains in the neighbourhood. It was then that the mountains in Thessaly parted, and that all the world outside the Isthmus and Peloponnese was overwhelmed. -

His Truth was hidden, but not completely absent from the ancient world.The Messiah, Christ, the Lord, came in fulfillment of the scriptures and the Bible is the culminating Truth that is handed down to us, his people. Greek mythology can show us glimpses of how HIS TRUTH and BEAUTY flow through all ages, and through all peoples, and yet, is incomplete without the resurrected Christ. It is useful to take a look at these pagan stories and see what little truths they carry, as well as, what Truth they misunderstand. This summer, you will need to read D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, and complete a writing assignment and a poster presentation for the book. This book can be purchased new or used online or borrowed from the library. You will discuss these stories in Bible class the first week of 6th grade and present your project in Latin class. Please see the requirements on the following pages. Read the book throughout the summer completely before starting the written and project work. Position of the Ancient Macedonian Language and the Name of the Contemporary Makedonski

The language spoken for centuries by people of the largest part of a small central Balkan country - Macedonia - is know under the name Makedonski (Macedonian). Rich folklore has been created in Makedonski, and during the last fifty years widely acknowledged literary writings have appeared in it. Under this name it has been taught abroad in a certain number of university centres, and it is included among the other European languages as a specific Balkan Slavic language. However, the southern neighbours cannot reconcile themselves to this name, because they think that it is Greek, taken by the "Republic of Skopje as a pretext for some territorial claim". In their thesis, thunderously propagated throughout the world, they identity themselves with ancient Macedonians, emphasising that ancient Macedonian was a Greek dialect like Ionian and Aeolian. The aim of this paper is to throw some light on the problem imposed on the political, scientific, scholarly and cultural circles of the world, in order to answer the question whether somebody's rights are usurped by the use of the name Macedonia/n. An analysis of the scarce survivals from the ancient Macedonian in comparison with some Greek parallels will show whether ancient Macedonian a Greek dialect, or a separate language, different from Greek. But, as the modern Greeks now pretend to an ethnical identity with the ancient Macedonians. I cannot avoid some historical data about the relations between classical Greeks and their contemporaneous Macedonians.
