Did you know that your child can apply to any public high school in New York City? As 8th graders they will have to choose between over seven hundred programs located in more than four hundred high schools. There are many factors that set the schools apart and countless considerations families account for when deciding where to apply, but we hope that your child will continue to wrestle in high school.
Wrestling is a sport that instills discipline, responsibility, and self-confidence in your child. In a study done by the DOE’s Policy and Research Support Group, results showed that students who participated in a Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) team while in high school had better attendance, were better prepared for college, enrolled in college at a higher rate, and graduated at a rate significantly higher than their peers.
Given the data linking wrestling participation to increased high school graduation and college enrollment rates, Beat the Streets is doubling our efforts to help families identify and select schools that fit a child’s academic need AND have a wrestling team.
While your family will have an astounding number of options to choose from when applying to high school, only one-third of the NYC Public Schools have a PSAL wrestling team. *We created this guide to help Beat The Streets families navigate the high school application process and identify which Public, Private and Catholic Schools have Wrestling teams. The high school application permits a student to list their top twelve choices, and the only way to guarantee that they will be matched with a school that has a wrestling team is if all twelve schools / programs they select are listed in this guide.
Good luck with the search, and please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can assist in any way.
Sincerely,
Penn Gottfried Junior League Director Beat the Streets Wrestling Inc.
* Information in this guide has been taken directly from t he NYC Department of Education’s 2018 NYC High School Director
