The early days of the formation of the band in their hometown of Athens, Georgia and their first Perfect Circle: The Story of REM at making music together are covered in detail with references from various friends who saw them through their formative days. They were heavily bolstered by a healthy local music scene which was open to embracing the new wave of sounds together with a healthy student population and college radio network which was prepared to air their music. Of course their dues were paid and their act was honed by playing live and most of the period was spent on the road. Supported by a sympathetic record label in IRS, they were lucky enough to have artistic license even from their early days and it was only when they veered from their Athens comfort zone and relocated to London to record their third album, Fables Of The Reconstructionthat they hit their first stumbling block. It was the break from IRS not an easy decision to make and their deal with Warner Brothers which elevated REM into the big time and one that could be viewed as the end of one era and the start of a new one — older fans maybe being a little more Perfect Circle: The Story of REM about the IRS albums and output whilst the early Warner recordings gained the mass Perfect Circle: The Story of REM and critical acclaim yet still allowed REM to remain a band who worked under their own terms and agenda. However, the three remained both upbeat and determined. Their place in the annals of popular music history and culture is secure and they can be satisfied that Tony Fletcher has done their Perfect Circle: The Story of REM legacy some justice in print. Regardless of what your opinion about R.E.M. is, there's no denying that they shaped the face of alternative rock for years. Heck, they've basically been every kind of alternative rock band themselves. They spent their formative years as cult favorite college rockers. Then, they started attracting more and more attention until they were making music with genuine mainstream appeal. Between 1991 and 1992 alone, they released the folk- inspired Out of Time and the baroque Automatic For The People, making them easily the most successful band to attack the audiences of the early grunge era with both mandolins ("Losing My Religion") and string arrangements (A good chunk of Automatic ).

Alongside your valuable insights and academic expertise, you were also supportive and understanding of a range of personal milestones which took place during the project. I would also like to extend my thanks to other members of the School of Music faculty who offered valuable insight during my research: Dr Kenneth Gloag; Dr Amanda Villepastour; and Prof. David Wyn Jones. My completion of this project would have been impossible without the support of my parents: Denise Arkell and John O’Connell. Without your understanding and backing it would have taken another five years to finish (and nobody wanted that). I would also like to thank my daughter Cecilia for her input during the final twelve months of the project. I look forward to making up for the periods of time we were apart while you allowed me to complete this work. Finally, I would like to thank my wife: Anne-Marie. • 'Police on My Back' Was Written in England by Eddy Grant and Recor
This is the Author's Accepted Manuscript of a publication in Social Identities, vol 19, no 5 (2013), pp. 536-551. ‘Police On My Back’ and the Postcolonial Experience ‘Police On My Back’ was written in England by Eddy Grant and recorded by his group, the Equals, in 1967. Since then it has been covered by a number of artists. In this article I am concerned with the original and four covers. Over the forty years between the Equals version of the song and the final version with which I am concerned the meaning of the lyrics has changed from being an expression of Jamaican rude boy culture to being a song that expresses the oppression of migrants from British and European colonies living in the metropoles of the colonisers. This article tracks the changes in musical and lyrical expression in the song against the increasingly oppressive circumstances of those migrants and their descendents. These are the circumstances that contributed to the British riots of 1981 and of 2011, and the French riots of 1981 and the many subsequent riots climaxing in those of 2005. ‘Police On My Back’ has always been hybrid. Grant’s version placed rude boy lyrics with a British beat group sound. Later, as the lyrics came to reflect the circumstances of the migrants, so the musical backing came to include a variety of musical forms many of which expressed the heritages of the performers and asserted the legitimacy of those heritages in a multicultural context. 1 ‘Police On My Back’; postcolonial; Equals; the Clash; Lethal Bizzle; riots One song that can be read as a marker of the changing experience of migrants in Britain and Europe is ‘Police On My Back’.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.
