SPEAKER in the Chair] GLORIA THOMASOS-POLLARD (DEATH OF) Mr. Speaker: Hon. Members, since the last sitting of this honourable House, it has come to my notice that a former Member of this House has died, and this person is Gloria Thomasos-Pollard. She had served in this House for a five-year period and her father had been the former longest serving Speaker in this Parliament. I thought that I should just bring this to the notice of hon. Members who may care to express condolences. The Minister of Housing and Settlements (Hon. John Humphrey): Mr. Speaker, anyone who has been in political life for as long as I have been would have known Arnold Thomasos when he was Speaker of this House. Those who, in fact, were in this House when he presided as Speaker would have known that he did not tolerate nonsense; he was a very strict Speaker. We could only judge that, as a parent, he would have been as strict and added to the strictness would have been the principle of love for his child. I had the advantage of knowing the late Gloria Thomasos-Pollard because I served for a while in the government in which she was involved. I must say that my knowledge of her late father and herself confirm, in fact, what I started saying that Gloria did manifest discipline, friendliness, and strictness, but she was a delightful person and all of us have fond memories of our association with her and also with her late father. -

Verge 5 Blatter 1 Chant Down Babylon: the Rastafarian Movement and Its Theodicy for the Suffering Emily Blatter The Rastafarian movement was born out of the Jamaican ghettos, where the descendents of slaves have continued to suffer from concentrated poverty, high unemployment, violent crime, and scarce opportunities for upward mobility. From its conception, the Rastafarian faith has provided hope to the disenfranchised, strengthening displaced Africans with the promise that Jah Rastafari is watching over them and that they will someday find relief in the promised land of Africa. In The Sacred Canopy , Peter Berger offers a sociological perspective on religion. Berger defines theodicy as an explanation for evil through religious legitimations and a way to maintain society by providing explanations for prevailing social inequalities. Berger explains that there exist both theodicies of happiness and theodicies of suffering. Certainly, the Rastafarian faith has provided a theodicy of suffering, providing followers with religious meaning in social inequality. Yet the Rastafarian faith challenges Berger’s notion of theodicy. Berger argues that theodicy is a form of society maintenance because it allows people to justify the existence of social evils rather than working to end them. The Rastafarian theodicy of suffering is unique in that it defies mainstream society; indeed, sociologist Charles Reavis Price labels the movement antisystemic, meaning that it confronts certain aspects of mainstream society and that it poses an alternative vision for society (9). The Rastas believe that the white man has constructed and legitimated a society that is oppressive to the black man. They call this society Babylon, and Rastas make every attempt to defy Babylon by refusing to live by the oppressors’ rules; hence, they wear their hair in dreads, smoke marijuana, and adhere to Marcus Garvey’s Ethiopianism. -

This is our 3rd anniversary issue, Natty Mark founding the magazine in June 2016, launching it at the 1st Mikey Dread Festival near Witney (an event that is also 3 years old this year). This summer sees a major upsurge in events involving members of The Dub family – Natty HiFi, Jah Lambs & Lions, Makepeace Promotions, Zion Roots, Swindon Dub Club, Field Frequency Sound System, High Grade and more – hence the launch of the new Dub Diary Newsletter at sessions. The aim is to spread the word about forthcoming gigs and sessions across the region, pulling different promoters’ efforts together. Give thanks to the photographers who have allowed us to use their pictures of events this month. The early days of the formation of the band in their hometown of Athens, Georgia and their first Perfect Circle: The Story of REM at making music together are covered in detail with references from various friends who saw them through their formative days. They were heavily bolstered by a healthy local music scene which was open to embracing the new wave of sounds together with a healthy student population and college radio network which was prepared to air their music. Of course their dues were paid and their act was honed by playing live and most of the period was spent on the road. Supported by a sympathetic record label in IRS, they were lucky enough to have artistic license even from their early days and it was only when they veered from their Athens comfort zone and relocated to London to record their third album, Fables Of The Reconstructionthat they hit their first stumbling block. It was the break from IRS not an easy decision to make and their deal with Warner Brothers which elevated REM into the big time and one that could be viewed as the end of one era and the start of a new one — older fans maybe being a little more Perfect Circle: The Story of REM about the IRS albums and output whilst the early Warner recordings gained the mass Perfect Circle: The Story of REM and critical acclaim yet still allowed REM to remain a band who worked under their own terms and agenda. -

“Diasporic Music in a Time of War”: Pantomime Terrors John Hutnyk1 Centre for Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London I increasingly find it problematic to write analytically about “diaspora and music” at a time of war. It seems inconsequential; the culture industry is not much more than a distraction; a fairy tale diversion to make us forget a more sinister amnesia behind the stories we tell. This paper nonetheless takes up debates about cultural expression in the field of diasporic musics in Britain. It examines instances of creative engagement with, and destabilisation of, music genres by Fun^da^mental and Asian Dub Foundation, and it takes a broadly culture critique perspective on diasporic creativity as a guide to thinking about the politics of hip- hop in a time of war. Examples from music industry and media reportage of the work of these two bands pose both political provocation and a challenge to the seemingly unruffled facade of British civil society, particularly insofar as musical work might still be relevant to struggles around race and war. Here, at a time of what conservative critics call a ‘clash of civilizations’, I examine how music and authenticity become the core parameters for a limited and largely one-sided argument that seems to side-step political context in favour of sensationalised – entrenched – identities and a mythic, perhaps unworkable, ideal of cultural harmony that praises the most asinine versions of multiculturalism while demonizing those most able to bring it about. Here the idea that musical cultures are variously authentic, possessive or coherent must be questioned when issues of death and destruction are central, but ignored. -

Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps.
