Five members of the Iowa CrossRoads Region of the CLC participated in the Des Moines Concours d’Elegance that was held at the Pappajohn Sculpure Park in downtown Des Moines on Sunday, September 8. All proceeds from the event are donated to the Children’s Cancer Connection of Des Moines, a non-profit organization that serves the needs of families diagnosed with cancer. Those members that participated in the event were Marj and Russ Bees, Nora Schlenker (who exhibited her 1938 LaSalle and won a third place award in her class), Jim Caffrey (who exhibited his 1967 Chrysler Imperial Crown Coupe with a very cool turnaround secretarial seat and table), and myself, Steve Fox (with my 1954 Buick Century Convertible on exhibit). The five of us also attended the welcome reception and exhibitor’s banquet, which were held in the Wellmark Building on the evening before the show (Saturday, September 7). Also in attendance were six of my scouts, who I recruited to help the Concours committee with registration, set up of the showfield, judging, awards and tear down. The star of the day, however, was Mother Nature, who provided a 12-hour window (from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday) for all of us to enjoy this fabulous show while staying dry. After the show’s conclusion, the rain restarted within one minute after parking my 1954 Buick back into my garage at home. No one can ever say that Mother Nature is not a classic car buff!

This year’s DMCd’E consisted of 162 pristine vehicles sorted among 17 classes: American Muscle Cars (1962-1975), American Orphans, Antiques (1899-1927), Atomic-Age Collectibles

(1946-1957), Behind the Iron Curtain, Bentley (100th Anniversary), Classics, Crosley, Early

Collectibles (1928-1942), Exotics, Japanese Cars, Motorcycles, Preservation (to 1969), Purpose- Built Racing Cars, Space-Age Collectibles (1958-1967), Star Cars, and World War II Military Vehicles (1942-1945). The 17 first-place winners from each class were a 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner (American Muscle Cars), 1954 Kaiser Darrin (American Orphans), 1917 Brewster, -Knight Touring Car (Antiques, also won Best in Show and is the only one left in existance), 1957 Porsche 356A 2-Door Coupe (Atomic-Age Collectibles), 1947 Tatra T-87 (Behind the Iron Curtain Class, from Czechoslovakia), 1951 Bentley Mark VI (Bentley Class), 1932 Auburn 8-Custom Cabriolet (Classics), 1952 Crosley Super Station Wagon (Crosley Class), 1937 Packard 120C Touring Sedan (Early Collectibles), 1962 Jaguar E-Type XKE (Exotics), 1969 Suburu 360 (Japanese Cars), 1946 Indian Motorcycle with Sidecar (Motorcycles Class), 1969 Olds Cutlass Convertible (Preservation Class), 1917 Hudson Super Six Racer (Purpose-Built Racing Cars), 1962 Ford Thunderbird Convertible (Space-Age Collectibles), 1947 Mercury “California” Convertible (Star Cars), and a 1943 Willys Weaponized Jeep (WWII Military Vehicles).

Note: See photos of some of these cars on the next two pages, including photos of the vehicles exhibited at the Concours by Iowa CrossRoads members.

Visit us on the web at www.iowacrossroadsregion.org October 2019 2019 The Cadillac Allante

The Cadillac Allanté is a two-door, two- seater luxury roadster produced by Cadillac from 1987 to 1993. It used a Cadillac chassis and running gear with a body built in Italy by coachbuilder . It was expensive to produce with the complete bodies flown to Detroit for final assembly. Only 21,430 were built during its seven-year production run.

The name Allanté was selected by from a list of 1,700 computer generated selections. Originally designed to compete with the Mercedes-Benz SL and Jaguar XJS, the Allanté originally featured a slightly modified variant of the 4.1 L V8 used across Cadillac's model line. This was expanded to 4.5 L in 1989, and upgraded to the 4.6 L L37-Northstar in its final year, 1993. The Allanté incorporated an international production arrangement that was similar to the early 1950s Nash-Healey two-seat sports car. The Allanté bodies were designed and manufactured in Italy by Pininfarina and were shipped 4,600 miles (7,403 km) to the U.S. final assembly with domestically manufactured chassis and engine. Specially equipped Boeing 747s departed Turin International Airport with 56 bodies at a time, arriving at Detroit's Coleman A. Young International Airport about three miles northeast of Cadillac's new Hamtramck Assembly plant, known as the "Allanté Air Bridge". The expensive shipping process stemmed from GM's recent closing of Fisher Body Plant #18, which had supplied Cadillac bodies since 1921. It was not the first time that Cadillac utilized Pininfarina, having farmed out body production for the 1959 Eldorado Brougham and design and coachworks for several one-offs, customs, and concept cars. All Allanté models featured a fully electronic instrument and control panel, which was angled towards the driver, and featured no knobs or manual controls. General Motors (GM) also implemented electronic controls in its mid-to-late 1980's vehicles such as the , , and Trofeo, although these vehicles included a touchscreen control panel called the Graphic Control Center (GCC), which the Allanté did not feature.
