Written by naval official Archibald Campbell, this pamphlet features Apollo and Mercury conducting an auction among booksellers for the premier writers of the day, including James Macpherson, John Wilkes, Charles Churchill, and Thomas Gray. With its magnified sense of poets' powerlessness in the commercialized literary culture of midcentury England, Campbell's text seems a typical attack on the vigorously expanding book trade. Yet while satirizing the transforma tion of writers into commodities, and over-emphasizing the dimin ished social stature that accompanies this change, Campbell manages to capture with some accuracy the defining features of Gray's literary career. -

Journal of History Culture and Art Research, 6(4), 55- 68. doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.7596/taksad.v6i4.1037 John Brown as an Independent Character from Warburton Circle PervinYiğit1 Abstract John Brown (1715-1766) and William Warburton (1698-1779) were two leading characters of the English Enlightenment. The enlightenment associated with their works could provide a political, social and intellectual situation of eighteenth century Britain. Therefore, they are worthy of attention. Britain became a trans-oceanic commercial and colonial power in the first half of the century and thus the growth of commercial society and empire changed the character of the nation. Warburton’s works were presenting a complicated programme for reform. Warburton and also his party (Warburton circle) aimed to preserve the Great Britain from the effects of intolerance, superstition, religious enthusiasm and religious division. They aimed to maintain the Anglican establishment. Brown who was considered as a loyal member of Warburton circle, regardless their fall out later, introduced reform strategies for the eighteenth century Britain like other members. In this paper it is indicated that Brown was developing a different reform agenda to that of William Warburton. -

What is remark¬ able and confounding is that such a school has been named often, differently, and never erroneously. When the philoso¬ phical, the moral, the religious, the reflective, the descrip¬ tive, and the didactic take principal parts in a poem, it is truly difficult to find an all-encompassing adjective which might serve to classify that poem; therefore, one critic might call a poem "philosophical" and another might call the same poem "reflective," both equally correct and equally unsatis¬ fying names. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract As one of the most well-known figures of the nineteenth century, John Stuart Mill was depicted extensively in journalism, pictures, life-writing and fiction. This thesis draws on a selection from these diverse and underexplored sources to offer a new perspective on Mill’s presence in Victorian cultural and emotional life. It shows how Mill figured in fierce debates about science and culture in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, and how ideas of Mill’s ‘femininity’ were used to both attack and commend him philosophically, politically and personally. Mill’s ‘Saint of Rationalism’ label continues to belie the extent to which he was associated with ideas of passion, sensitivity, tenderness, feeling, and emotion in the nineteenth century. This project explores how such terms were invoked in relation to Mill as a philosopher and politician, but also how they related to readers’ encounters with his works. More than any previous study, this thesis pays close attention to the interaction between verbal and visual depictions, and considers official images and caricatures of Mill alongside written accounts. -

Poetic Numbers: Measurement and the Formation of Literary Criticism in Enlightenment England Joshua Swidzinski Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Joshua Swidzinski All rights reserved ABSTRACT Poetic Numbers: Measurement and the Formation of Literary Criticism in Enlightenment England Joshua Swidzinski This dissertation examines the importance of the concept of measurement to poets and literary critics in eighteenth-century England. It documents attempts to measure aspects of literary form, especially prosodic phenomena such as meter and rhythm, and it explores how these empirical and pseudo-empirical experiments influenced the writing and reading of poetry. During the Enlightenment, it argues, poets and critics were particularly drawn to prosody's apparent objectivity: through the parsing of lines and counting of syllables, prosody seemed to allow one to isolate and quite literally measure the beauty and significance of verse. Inquiries into the social and historical functions of literature routinely relied on this discourse, exploring questions of style, politics, and philosophy with the help of prosodic measurement. By drawing on works and artifacts ranging from dictionaries and grammars to mnemonic schemes and notional verse-making machines, and through close readings of poet-critics such as John Dryden, Alexander Pope, Thomas Gray, and Samuel Johnson, "Poetic Numbers" contends that the eighteenth century's fascination with prosody represents a foundational moment in the history of literary criticism: a moment whose acute self-consciousness about literary critical methods, as well as about whether and how these methods can aspire to count and account for aspects of literary experience, anticipates many of the methodological questions that mark our own time. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. i Abstract Eighteenth-century, British georgic poetry’s shift away from its conventional theme of agriculture is often discussed as justifying Britain’s commercial imperialism and a broader commitment to progressivist Whig history. I argue that such approaches neglect its participation in the intellectual history of the liberal state itself. Georgics are exemplary texts to read alongside politico-economic treatises like Adam Smith’s An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776). James Thomson’s The Seasons (1730) moralizes personal industry and innovation while veering from detailed examples of natural phenomena, to vast ecological networks, to nature’s determinative, physical and moral laws.
