BEFORE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE AMERICAN BOOK AWARDS 2004 America was intended to be a place where freedom from discrimination was the means by which equality was achieved. Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -

Asian American Literature: Discourses and Pedagogies 3 (2012) i-iv. Introducing Mixed Heritage Asian American Literature By Wei Ming Dariotis AALDP is motivated by an interest in foregrounding scholarship that is useful for pedagogy. We are concerned with reshaping Asian American literary studies discourse towards practical applications in the classroom or in learning environments. What is special about this issue is the focus on mixed heritage Asian American literature. When I started working on this topic as a graduate student in the early 1990s, I worked in what felt like almost complete isolation. I had discovered Asian American literature as a senior in college, when the poet (then my creative writing classmate) Brian Komei Dempster dragged me, almost kicking and screaming, into a class taught by Shawn Wong on Chinese and Japanese American literature. By the end of my senior year, I had taken 4 classes from Shawn Wong, and served as his research assistant for the Before Columbus Foundation. His buddy, Frank Chin, came and spoke in our class and I was charged with babysitting Chin’s mixed heritage son. The poet Li-Young Lee came and spoke with a small group of Wong’s students. My biggest thrill, however, was meeting Jessica Hagedorn on a hot New York sidewalk outside the Nuyorican Poet’s Café, inside which the Before Columbus Foundation was celebrating it’s annual American Book Awards. Hagedorn was to be an awardee for her novel, Dogeaters, which had just blown my 20-year old mind. I had already applied to grad school with the intention of studying medieval English literature, but there was no going back. -

Shawn Wong's second novel, American Knees, was published by Simon & Schuster in 1995 (Scribner paperback, 1996; reissued by University of Washington Press, 2005). The film version of American Knees, titled "Americanese," was released in 2013 (directed by Eric Byler). The film won several film festival awards and Wong served as associate producer (www.americanknees.com). Wong's first novel, Homebase (Reed and Cannon, 1979; reissued by Plume/NAL, 1990 and again by the University of Washington Press in 2008), won both the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award and the 15th Annual Governor's Writers Day Award of Washington. He is also the co-editor and editor of six Asian American and American multicultural literary anthologies including the pioneering anthology Aiiieeeee! An Anthology of Asian American Writers (Howard University Press, 1974; reprinted in four different editions, most recently by Meridian in 1997) and, The Big Aiiieeeee! An Anthology of Chinese America and Japanese America in Literature (Meridian/NAL, 1991) and Literary Mosaic: Asian American Literature (HarperCollins, 1995). and Asian Diasporas: Cultures, Identities, Representations (Hong Kong University Press, 2004). He is co-editor of Before Columbus Foundation Fiction/Poetry Anthology: Selections from the American Book Awards, 1980-1990, two volumes of contemporary American multicultural poetry and fiction (W. W. Norton, 1992). Wong has also been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship and a Rockefeller Foundation residency in Italy. He has won several writing awards including a first prize from the Society of Professional Journalists in the humor category in 1997. Wong was featured in the 1997 PBS documentary, “Shattering the Silences” and in the Bill Moyers’ PBS documentary, “Becoming American: The Chinese Experience,” in 2003. -

Chapter 1 Miscegenating Discourses: Critical Contexts for Mixed Race Asian American Art and Identity LAura KInA and WeI MIng DariotIs foCused on contemporary visual culture, War Baby / Love Child: Mixed Race Asian American Art investigates multivalent constructions of mixed heritage Asian American identity in the United States. As an increasingly ethnically ambiguous Asian American generation comes of age, this book examines—by way of varying degrees and differing registers—how mixed heritage Asian Americans artistically contemplate, engage, and address what Lisa Lowe famously termed “heterogeneity, hybridity, and multiplicity” in their respective artwork.1 As important, War Baby / Love Child draws its various sites of inquiry from critical mixed race studies, illumi- nating a complex intersection of racialization, war and imperialism, gender and sexu- ality, and citizenship and nationality. This multiauthor volume features more than thirty works across diverse media by nineteen emerging, midcareer, and established artists who reflect a breadth of mixed heritage ethnoracial and geographic diversity, as well as a variety of artistic styles. Through interviews with the artists grouped with essays by ten leading interdisciplinary Critical Mixed Race and Asian American studies scholars, War Baby / Love Child explores the ways in which these artists are navigating and imagining their individual and communal identities against broader art historical, legal, and domestic and transnational social contexts. “Bridge between Two Worlds”?: Re-seeing Mixed Heritage Asian American Racial Formation Set against an imaginary of U.S. imperialism (inclusive of war and colonization in Asia and the Pacific Islands), mixed race Asian Americans likewise reflect dramatic shifts in immigration policy and Civil Rights–era legislation. -

Sounds of Asian American Trauma and Cultural Trauma: Jazz Reflections on the Japanese Internment ERIC HUNG Abstract: This article examines post-1980 musical responses to the Japanese Internment in the United States during WW II. It argues that these works differ because they were created at different points in the history of the Asian American movement. While the early works by Jon Jang and Glenn Horiuchi – written around the time of the 1988 Civil Liberties Act – focused on political action, later works by Anthony Brown and Soji Kashiwagi were more concerned with education and the personal traumas of former interns. Résumé : Cet article examine les réponses musicales apportées après 1980 à l’internement des Japonais aux États-Unis durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il soutient que ces travaux diffèrent parce qu’ils ont été créés en différents points de l’histoire du mouvement américano-asiatique. It disrupts one’s sense of self and sabotages one’s efforts to narrativize and make sense of the experience. It moreover produces haunting memories that freeze and silence the victim-survivor. What makes the effects of this disorder so difficult to treat and endure is the fact that the effects of trauma are produced not by the original experience, but by involuntary remembrances that often emerge years or even decades after the incidents that precipitated the trauma. -

Asian American Art and Literature Abstract Asian American literature and art cannot be explained by one set of aesthetics or a single method or approach. The sheer diversity of the artists and their backgrounds and even the variety and change within the oeuvre of an individual artist simply defy neat categorization. Some artists emphasize personal experience and reflection; others reflect on historical occurrences and cultural phenomena; others tend toward sheer experimentation with forms of expression and types of media or discourse. Literary Philanthropy and 20Th Century American Literature
Buying Time: Literary Philanthropy and 20th Century American Literature Alexander Rocca Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2017 © 2017 Alexander Rocca All rights reserved ABSTRACT Buying Time: Literary Philanthropy and 20th Century American Literature Alexander Rocca This dissertation analyzes the influence of cultural philanthropy on 20th and 21st-century American literature. Modern cultural philanthropy emerged in the late 19th century out of the fortunes of wealthy industrialists such as Andrew Carnegie, and grew to be one of the three pillars of the 20th-century literary economy alongside the publishing market and the university system. I trace the origins and evolution of literary philanthropic institutions through authorial case studies to show how funding from the Guggenheim Foundation, the PEN American Center, the National Endowment for the Arts Literature Program, and the MacArthur Foundation have opened avenues for collective political action and individual aesthetic innovation alike, while at the same time extending the power and influence of institutions over the cultural sphere. Through readings of Walter Francis White, Langston Hughes, Philip Roth, Leslie Marmon Silko, Maxine Hong Kingston, and David Foster Wallace, I show how philanthropic institutions have sought to make modernity hospitable for writers—part of what John Dewey in the 1930s called modernity’s “lost individuals”—by incorporating them and their work into the American democratic project. The effect, I argue, has been the democratization of American literature and an unprecedented efflorescence of writing by the varied people and social groups that at once constitute America and its most profound aspirations. -

Asian American Literature: Discourses and Pedagogies 10 (2019/20) 37-41 Aiiieeeee!’s NO! in Thunder By Leslie Bow The first time I encountered Frank Chin, he was on a rant. Shirley Geok-lin Lim had convened an Asian American literature conference at UC Santa Barbara in 1991. Her Forbidden Stitch: an Asian American Women’s Anthology (1989) had recently come out as part of the next wave of Asian American literary anthologies following Aiiieeeee!: An Anthology of Asian-American Writers. It was the title that triggered him. “The ‘forbidden stitch’ is a fake!,” he was shouting. “There’s no such thing! It’s not real!” True enough: the idea that emBroidery causes blindness is certainly an orientalist myth. But the stitch exists, if more prosaically, as a French knot. When he paused, I mildly interjected, “I have news for you. Donald Duck is not real.” A woman listening to the one-sided exchange barked out a laugh, recognizing the reference to Chin’s own novel. But he kept on as if he had not heard either of us. Nor did he seem to care about eliciting a response. He just kept going. The tirade was in keeping with Chin’s preoccupation with distinguishing Between “real” and “fake” Asian American writers in Aiiieeeee!’s 1991 sequel, The Big Aiiieeeee!. In 1974, he and his co-editors drew that distinction in more veiled terms by distinguishing between those writers reflecting an “Asian-American sensibility” (3) and those “Americanized Asians” (xix) who pandered to white audiences. By 1991’s publication of The Big Aiiieeeee!, the original and innovative viewpoint expressed in the first anthology had assumed the air of same old, same old.
