2008 The Seattle Foundation Annual Report Donors & Contributors 3 Grantees 13 Fiscal Sponsorships 28 Financial Highlights 30 Trustees and Staff 33 Committees 34 www.seattlefoundation.org | (206) 622-2294 While the 2008 financial crisis created greater needs in our community, it also gave us reason for hope. 2008 Foundation donors have risen to the challenges that face King County today by generously supporting the organizations effectively working to improve the well-being of our community. The Seattle Foundation’s commitment to building a healthy community for all King County residents remains as strong as ever. In 2008, with our donors, we granted more than $63 million to over 2000 organizations and promising initiatives in King County and beyond. Though our assets declined like most investments nationwide, The Seattle Foundation’s portfolio performed well when benchmarked against comparable endowments. In the longer term, The Seattle Foundation has outperformed portfolios comprised of traditional stocks and bonds due to prudent and responsible stewardship of charitable funds that has been the basis of our investment strategy for decades. The Seattle Foundation is also leading efforts to respond to increasing need in our community. Late last year The Seattle Foundation joined forces with the United Way of King County and other local funders to create the Building Resilience Fund—a three-year, $6 million effort to help local people who have been hardest hit by the economic downturn. Through this fund, we are bolstering the capacity of selected nonprofits to meet increasing basic needs and providing a network of services to put people on the road on self-reliance.

  • Ii. Dialogue Program
II. DIALOGUE PROGRAM Introduction Through its Dialogue Program, PASSIA has ever since its foundation striven both to promote free expression within Palestinian society and to foster a better understanding of Palestinian affairs, be they in the domestic or international context. In doing so, PASSIA has earned a reputation for providing a unique forum for dialogue and exchange and for serving as a catalyst for civic debate. Central to these efforts has been the presentation and analysis of a plurality of Palestinian perspectives and approaches. Topics addressed and discussed cover a wide range of subjects broadly and specifically related to the Palestine Question, from historical aspects to the current Middle East Peace Process and internal Palestinian affairs. The PASSIA Dialogue Program is divided into the following three sections: Roundtable Meetings: PASSIA invites a speaker (and sometimes a discussant as well) to lecture on a certain topic, followed by a discussion with the audience present. Particularly topical issues are sometimes the subject of a series of lectures by as varied a range of speakers as possible. These meetings aim to promote thought and debate among Palestinians and between Palestinians and their foreign counterparts. Briefings: PASSIA frequently provides a venue for encounters, dialogue and discussions involving representatives and organizations from various backgrounds. These meetings focus on current Palestinian affairs and are designed to build bridges of communication and understanding between Palestinians from different streams of society and to develop constructive and focused academic contact between Palestinians and Israelis. PASSIA has also hosted numerous meetings in which resident diplomats and visiting foreign missions are invited to discuss Palestinian affairs and exchange thoughts and opinions concerning the situation in the Palestinian Territories.

  • WLA Conference 2013 COVER
Mural of Queen Califia and her Amazons, Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco – Maynard Dixon and Frank Von Sloun The name of California derives from the legend of Califia, the queen of an island inhabited by dark- skinned Amazons in a 1521 novel by Garci Ordóñez de Montalvo, Las Sergas de Esplandián. Califia has been depicted as the Spirit of California, and she often figures in the myth of California's origin, symbolizing an untamed and bountiful land prior to European settlement. California has been calling to the world ever since, as land of promise, dreams and abundance, but also often as a land of harsh reality. The 48th annual conference of the Western Literature Association welcomes you to Berkeley, California, on the marina looking out to the San Francisco Bay. This is a place as rich in history and myth as Queen Califia herself. • American Book Awards 2004
BEFORE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE AMERICAN BOOK AWARDS 2004 America was intended to be a place where freedom from discrimination was the means by which equality was achieved. Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre.
