Since 2014, Reed’s interview was expanded to take into account the presidency of Donald Trump. The title of this interview was supplied by this publication. Ishmael Reed (b. 1938) is the winner of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship (genius award), the renowned L.A. Times Robert Kirsch Lifetime Achievement Award, the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the National Institute for Arts and Letters. He has been nominated for a Pulitzer and finalist for two National Book Awards and is Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley (a thirty-five year presence); he has also taught at Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth. -

Califia has been depicted as the Spirit of California, and she often figures in the myth of California's origin, symbolizing an untamed and bountiful land prior to European settlement. California has been calling to the world ever since, as land of promise, dreams and abundance, but also often as a land of harsh reality. BEFORE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE AMERICAN BOOK AWARDS 2004 America was intended to be a place where freedom from discrimination was the means by which equality was achieved. Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -

Each entry combines at least one picture of the individual profiled, and bold-faced rubrics lead the reader to information on birth, youth, early memories, education, first jobs, marriage and family, career highlights, memorable experiences, hobbies, and honors and awards. Each of the entries ends with a list of easily accessible sources to lead the student to further reading on the individual and a current address. Obituary entries also are included, written to prcvide a perspective on an individual's entire career. Beginning with this volume, the magazine includes brief entries of approximately two pages each. -

Transnational Asian American Literature: Sites and Transits Does Not Set out to Reject a U.S
P1: OTE/SPH P2: OTE GRBT094-Lim November 19, 2005 6:24 Introduction Shirley Geok-lin Lim, John Blair Gamber, Stephen Hong Sohn, and Gina Valentino Transnational Asian American Literature: Sites and Transits does not set out to reject a U.S. nation location for Asian American writing. Rather, this collection of essays sees the nation-formation themes, often intrinsically tied to language strategies and formal features, as one subject rising from a set of historical dynamics that traverse and explain the col- lective body of Asian American literature. A second set of dynamics comes from the diasporic, mobile, transmigratory nature of Asian American ex- perience, a history characterized by disparate migratory threads, unset- tled and unsettling histories churned by multiple and different Asian eth- nic immigrant groups each with a different language and cultural stock, different value and belief systems, and different notions of literary aes- thetics, albeit most largely mediated through the English language. This continuous narrative of Asian American entry, reentry, expulsion, remi- gration, and movement across and between borders, what Aihwa Ong (1999) had partly captured in the phrase “flexible citizenship,” which nonetheless does not successfully express the open-ended and sometimes exhausting nature of “temporary” societies and characters. These “im- migrant” subjects are not always fugitive and furtive like the manong in Bulosan’s America Is in the Heart (1946), or queer as in Lawrence Chua’s Gold by the Inch (1998). In our use of the phrase “sites and transits” in the volume’s title, “site” also denotes attitudes and postures, the ar- rested moment of identity in a place and time, while “transit” denotes, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, that “instance of passing or journeying across.” A transit is also the passage of a celestial body over the meridian of a place or through the field of a telescope. -

Shawn Wong's second novel, American Knees, was published by Simon & Schuster in 1995 (Scribner paperback, 1996; reissued by University of Washington Press, 2005). The film version of American Knees, titled "Americanese," was released in 2013 (directed by Eric Byler). The film won several film festival awards and Wong served as associate producer (www.americanknees.com). Wong's first novel, Homebase (Reed and Cannon, 1979; reissued by Plume/NAL, 1990 and again by the University of Washington Press in 2008), won both the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award and the 15th Annual Governor's Writers Day Award of Washington. He is also the co-editor and editor of six Asian American and American multicultural literary anthologies including the pioneering anthology Aiiieeeee! An Anthology of Asian American Writers (Howard University Press, 1974; reprinted in four different editions, most recently by Meridian in 1997) and, The Big Aiiieeeee! An Anthology of Chinese America and Japanese America in Literature (Meridian/NAL, 1991) and Literary Mosaic: Asian American Literature (HarperCollins, 1995). and Asian Diasporas: Cultures, Identities, Representations (Hong Kong University Press, 2004). He is co-editor of Before Columbus Foundation Fiction/Poetry Anthology: Selections from the American Book Awards, 1980-1990, two volumes of contemporary American multicultural poetry and fiction (W. W. Norton, 1992). Wong has also been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship and a Rockefeller Foundation residency in Italy. He has won several writing awards including a first prize from the Society of Professional Journalists in the humor category in 1997. Wong was featured in the 1997 PBS documentary, “Shattering the Silences” and in the Bill Moyers’ PBS documentary, “Becoming American: The Chinese Experience,” in 2003. -

Chapter 1 Miscegenating Discourses: Critical Contexts for Mixed Race Asian American Art and Identity LAura KInA and WeI MIng DariotIs foCused on contemporary visual culture, War Baby / Love Child: Mixed Race Asian American Art investigates multivalent constructions of mixed heritage Asian American identity in the United States. As an increasingly ethnically ambiguous Asian American generation comes of age, this book examines—by way of varying degrees and differing registers—how mixed heritage Asian Americans artistically contemplate, engage, and address what Lisa Lowe famously termed “heterogeneity, hybridity, and multiplicity” in their respective artwork.1 As important, War Baby / Love Child draws its various sites of inquiry from critical mixed race studies, illumi- nating a complex intersection of racialization, war and imperialism, gender and sexu- ality, and citizenship and nationality. This multiauthor volume features more than thirty works across diverse media by nineteen emerging, midcareer, and established artists who reflect a breadth of mixed heritage ethnoracial and geographic diversity, as well as a variety of artistic styles. Through interviews with the artists grouped with essays by ten leading interdisciplinary Critical Mixed Race and Asian American studies scholars, War Baby / Love Child explores the ways in which these artists are navigating and imagining their individual and communal identities against broader art historical, legal, and domestic and transnational social contexts. “Bridge between Two Worlds”?: Re-seeing Mixed Heritage Asian American Racial Formation Set against an imaginary of U.S. imperialism (inclusive of war and colonization in Asia and the Pacific Islands), mixed race Asian Americans likewise reflect dramatic shifts in immigration policy and Civil Rights–era legislation. -
