Catling had recently used it to make Under the Frozen Falls, a short children’s film that had benefited from the IF’s aim to “rationalize that which is largely irrational in film making.”1 He described how his film had been very carefully pre-planned in terms of script, storyboards, and technical plans. Several scenes were pre-staged and filmed without the main cast who were later incorporated into scenes by means of rear projection. Special effects were of paramount importance in reducing the number of sets that needed to be built.

Flanagan 2015 iii THE BRITISH WAR FILM, 1939-1980: CULTURE, HISTORY, AND GENRE Kevin M. Flanagan, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2015 This dissertation argues that discussions of war representation that privilege the nationalistic, heroic, and redemptively sacrificial strand of storytelling that dominate popular memory in Britain ignore a whole counter-history of movies that view war as an occasion to critique through devices like humor, irony, and existential alienation. Instead of selling audiences on what Graham Dawson has called “the pleasure culture of war” (a nationally self-serving mode of talking about and profiting from war memory), many texts about war are motivated by other intellectual and ideological factors. Each chapter includes historical context and periodizing arguments about different moments in British cultural history, explores genre trends, and ends with a comparative analysis of representative examples.

It argues that the biopic is a necessary category because producers, reviewers and cinemagoers have significant investments in biographical subjects, and because biopics construct a ‘public history’ for a broad audience.

Drawing on the work of Stephen Barber (2002), Charlotte Brundson (2007), David B. Clarke (1997) and Barbara Mennel (2008), the thesis proposes five city film properties, which are used when analysing Istanbul spy films. These properties are: first, ‘city landmarks, cityscapes and city spectacles’; second, ‘cinematic constructions of social life via social and power relations’; third, the ‘relationship between the protagonist and the city’; fourth, the ‘cinematic city trope and mise-en-scène’; and finally, the ‘story of a city’ or ‘the idea of a city’.

In his remarkable follow-up, The Forgiveness of Blood, he turns his camera on another corner of the world: contemporary northern albania, a place still troubled by the ancient custom of interfamilial blood feuds. From this reality, marston sculpts a fictional narrative about a teenage brother and sister physically and emotionally trapped in a cycle of violence, a result of their father’s entanglement with a rival clan over a piece of land. A COUPLE THAT FIGHTS TOGETHER STAYS TOGETHER: ROMANCE, MARRIAGE, AND DIVORCE IN BRITISH HOME FRONT FILMS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR by IDIT KOLAN Under the Direction of Ian C. Fletcher ABSTRACT The impact of total war on the British home front from 1939 to 1945 was profound. In particular, military and economic mobilization disrupted gender relations. Men and women of different class and national backgrounds encountered each other, sometimes forming romantic relationships that strained the institutions of marriage and family. This disruption was heavily depicted in wartime British cinema, especially in feature films devoted to the home front experience. Differences of class, gender, and nationality were downplayed in order to construct a solidaristic meaning for wartime social experience, fitting for “the People’s War.” My thesis examines romantic relationships and marriages depicted in numerous British home front films.

Abstract Existing research on British cinema during the 1940s has often assumed an opposition between realism and fantasy or, as it is also known, 'realism and tinsel'. However, through an analysis of contemporary critical reception and censorship discourses, it becomes apparent how this division was nowhere near as clearly defined as is often argued. Discussions surrounding a supposed ‘ban’ on horror during 1942- 45, and the subsequent debates regarding realism in the post-war climate, demonstrate how realism was often associated with fantasy and vice versa. While the ‘quality’ realist film of the 1940s demonstrates a concern with verisimilitude and the reproduction of the surface appearances of reality, when confronting the obscene or the taboo hidden below this surface realism was deemed to be far more closely associated with ‘horrific’ fantasy. This thesis therefore looks beyond common perceptions of British cinema during this period through an analysis of contemporary discussions surrounding the relationship between ‘realism and tinsel’, with a particular emphasis upon the misapprehension that the horror ‘ban’ signified a falling interest in fantasy in favour of the ‘quality’ of realism.
