1.1. Was the shaping of the American Southwest a direct result of the Coronado Expedition's meetings with natives? The answer to this question is embedded throughout the other topics. However, by 1575, the Spanish Crown declared that the conquest was over and the new policy of pacification would be in force. Still, the next phase that would shape the American Southwest involved settlement, missionization, and expansion for valuable resources such as iron, tin, copper, tar, salt, lumber, etc. Francisco Vázquez de Coronado’s expedition did set the Native American wariness toward the Spanish occupation of areas close to them. Rebellions were the corrective to their displeasure over colonial injustices and institutions as well as the mission system that threatened their beliefs and spiritualism. In the end, a kind of syncretism and symbiosis resulted. Today, given that the Spanish colonial system recognized that the Pueblos and mission Indians had a legal status, land grants issued during that period protects their lands against the new settlement pattern that followed: that of the Anglo-American.

  • Abstract Hodnet, Andrew Arthur
ABSTRACT HODNET, ANDREW ARTHUR. The Othering of the Landsknechte. (Under the direction of Dr. Verena Kasper-Marienberg). This thesis offers a socio-cultural analysis of early modern German media to explore the public perception of the Landsknechte, mercenaries that were both valued and feared for their viciousness, and their indifference displayed towards the political motivations of their clients. Despite their ubiquity on European battlefields, and their role in repulsing the 1529 Ottoman invasion of Austria, by 1530 the Landsknechte and their families were perceived as thoroughly dishonorable by central Reformation society and were legally excluded from most urban centers. This study engages with a critical assessment of contemporary songs, religious pamphlets, broadsheets, political treatises, autobiographic sources, and belletristic representations of the Landsknechte to explore the paradoxical relationship that they maintained with the state actors that relied on their employment. Through engaging with the cultural genres present in these depictions, the othering of the Landsknechte stems from their origin as the militaristic arm of Emperor Maximilian I’s attempted centralization of the Holy Roman Empire, continuing with the economic challenge the mercenary lifestyle posed to traditional social structures, and ending with their inextricable association between with the increasingly destructive and intrusive military-fiscal state. © Copyright 2018 by Andrew Arthur Hodnet All Rights Reserved The Othering of the Landsknechte by Andrew Arthur Hodnet A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of North Carolina State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts History Raleigh, North Carolina 2018 APPROVED BY: _______________________________ _______________________________ Dr. Verena Kasper-Marienberg Dr.

The Dutch revolted against the Spanish domination during the 1560s, leading to a protracted war of independence that led to a truce only in 1609.

0805 Part No. X11-35580 Safety Warning About Photosensitive Seizures A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these "photosensitive epileptic seizures" while watching video games. These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects. Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the above symptoms—children and teenagers are more likely than adults to experience these seizures. The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reduced by taking the following precautions: • Play in a well-lit room. • Do not play when you are drowsy or fatigued. If you or any of your relatives have a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before playing. It is based on intensive statistical study of common soldiers in Electoral Saxony during the Thirty Years War, through which I both analyze the demographics of soldiers’ backgrounds and discuss military wages in depth. Drawing on microhistory and anthropology, I also follow the career of a single regiment, headed by Wolfgang von Mansfeld (1575-1638), from mustering-in in 1625 to dissolution in 1627. This regiment was made up largely of people from Saxony but it fought in Italy on behalf of the King of Spain, demonstrating the global, transnational nature of early-modern warfare. My findings upend several assumptions about early seventeenth-century soldiers and war. Contrary to the Military Revolution thesis, soldiers do not appear to have become more disciplined during this period, nor was drill particularly important to their daily lives.

  • New Mexico Spanish History to 1910
La Sociedad de la Entrada Oñate And The European Invasion We do not attempt to defend or accuse the actions of the original Spanish Colonists – particularly Oñate who was guilty of human rights violations, even such as they were in those days. History has already done that. He was arrested in Mexico City, tried, and convicted of his crimes and King Phillip III never forgave him for his cruelty to both, natives and colonists alike (a fact that is largely overlooked). But, unfortunately, everyone was cruel in those days. Those were hard times and it took hard people to survive. And the native peoples faced one especially hard fact. The Europeans were coming and no one could stop that. However, one thing must be pointed out in regard to New Mexico history. The Pueblos still exist. Anyone can travel to Acoma Pueblo, for example, and listen to their story, learn about their language, religion, food, song, dance, history, and traditional way of life. And although the Spanish are considered to have been overly cruel “Conquistadores” compared to other nations, people who believe that should travel to the area of, say, Jamestown, Virginia, to learn about the native tribes who lived in the region and what they suffered at the hands of the English Colonists. But that’s not possible because they don’t exist anymore. In fact, when the movie “A New World” was made they had to invent a language, customs, and habits in order to portray the native tribes who lived there. Here in New Mexico the descendants of the Native Americans still live in their ancestral home grounds and keep their traditional way of life as they see fit – and we’re very lucky to have them.

  • Arquebus (Edited from Wikipedia)
Arquebus (Edited from Wikipedia) SUMMARY The arquebus is an early muzzle-loaded firearm used in the 15th to 17th centuries. An arquebus was originally a gonne with hook, and later a matchlock firearm. Like its successor the musket, it is a smoothbore firearm, but was initially lighter and easier to carry. It is a forerunner of the rifle and other longarm firearms. An improved version of the arquebus, the caliver, was introduced in the early 16th century. The word is derived from the English corruption of calibre as this gun was of standard bore, increasing combat effectiveness as troops could load bullets that would fit their guns (before, they would have to modify shot to fit, force it in, or cast their own before the battle). HISTORY Hand Cannons (Or Gonne) A hand cannon or gonne (also spelled handgonne to distinguish the device from modern handguns) is one of the early forms of firearm. [This is where the word “gun” comes from.] It is possibly the oldest type of small arms, as well as the simplest type of early firearm, as most examples require direct manual external ignition through a touch hole without any form of firing mechanism. It may also be considered a forerunner of the handgun. The hand cannon was widely used in East Asia and later throughout Europe until at least the 1520s, when it was supplanted by matchlock firearms. The oldest surviving hand cannon is the Heilongjiang hand cannon, which was manufactured no later than 1288. The general consensus is that hand cannons originated in China and were spread from there to the rest of the world.
