A journalist, poet, comedy sketch writer, and songwriter, he turned to fiction, and the first Fu-Manchu story, The Zayat Kiss, appeared in The Story-Teller magazine in October, 1912. That story became the beginning of the novel The Mystery of Dr. Fu-Manchu, and fourteen more followed, making Rohmer one of the most successful novelists of the 1920s and 1930s. Fu-Manchu has been featured in radio, television, comic strips, and comic books. In film he has been portrayed by such actors as Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, John Carradine, Peter Sellers, and Nicolas Cage. Rohmer died in 1959, a victim of an outbreak of the type A influenza known as the Asian flu.     ABSTRACT Stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans in the U.S. Media: Appearance, Disappearance, and Assimilation Yueqin Yang, M.A. Mentor: Douglas R. Ferdon, Jr., Ph.D. This thesis commits to highlighting major stereotypes concerning Asians and Asian Americans found in the U.S. media, the “Yellow Peril,” the perpetual foreigner, the model minority, and problematic representations of gender and sexuality. In the U.S. media, Asians and Asian Americans are greatly underrepresented. Acting roles that are granted to them in television series, films, and shows usually consist of stereotyped characters. It is unacceptable to socialize such stereotypes, for the media play a significant role of education and social networking which help people understand themselves and their relation with others. Within the limited pages of the thesis, I devote to exploring such labels as the “Yellow Peril,” perpetual foreigner, the model minority, the emasculated Asian male and the hyper-sexualized Asian female in the U.S. media. During that time, I examined the racist stereotypes of white, western people living in Taiwan on the natives. I compared the data I gathered from the field work with the Chinese stereo- type that is prevalent in the popular culture. The results show the importance of racist generalization in white westerners’ self-perception. The character called Fu Manchu, which emerges in various different media since 1913, appears to be an important means in measuring these changing perceptions. Fu Manchu’s fear factor is formed after the character’s way of expressing its sexu- ality when it was first created. In the western world after the “sexual revolution” in 60s, Fu Manchu is depicted scary because of the repression of its own sexuality. This research associates the philosophical causes of this change with the contradic- tions in Freud’s corpus. It also shows the importance of gender roles in the for- mation of whiteness. The white mob describes their opposite Chinese, and therefore Fu Manchu, deviant when they want to perceive themselves as sexually purified, chaste and virgin. Later on, when they want to create themselves from scratch as individuals who liberated their sexuality, Fu Manchu is once more devised as a symbol of malignancy who represses its sexuality.

    Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television A Thesis Submitted to School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cheng Qian September, 2019 !i Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television ABSTRACT China's rise has led to increased interest in the representation of Chinese culture and identity, espe- cially in Western popular culture. While Chinese and Chinese American characters are increasingly found in television and films, the literature on their media representation, especially in television dramas is limited. Most studies tend to focus on audience reception with little concentration on a show's substantive content or style. This thesis helps to fill the gap by exploring how Chinese and Chinese American characters are portrayed and how these portrayals effect audiences' attitude from both an in-group and out-group perspective. The thesis focuses on four popular US based television dramas aired between 2010 to 2018. Drawing on stereotype and stereotyping theories, applying visual analysis and critical discourse analysis, this thesis explores the main stereotypes of the Chinese, dhow they are presented, and their impact. I focus on the themes of enemies, model minor- ity, female representations, and the accepted others. Based on the idea that the media can both con- struct and reflect the beliefs and ideologies of a society I ask how representational practice and dis- cursive formations signify difference and 'otherness' in relation to Chinese and Chinese Americans. I argue that while there has been progress in the representation of Chinese and Chinese Americans, they are still underrepresented on the screen.

Clearly an important theme will be ethnic diversity and inclusion, in front of and behind the camera.     Cosmopolitan Pleasures and Affects; Or Why Are We Still Talking about Yellowface in Twenty-First-Century Cinema? Felicia Chan Abstract: It is now widely acknowledged that the postracial fantasies ushered in by Barack Obama’s two-term election success are now in tatters. Yet debates on yellowface casting practices in contemporary Hollywood (also said to have evolved into “whitewashing” practices), in such films as The Last Airbender (M. Night Shyamalan, 2010), Aloha (Cameron Crowe, 2015), Doctor Strange (Scott Derrickson, 2016), Birth of the Dragon (George Nolfi, 2016), and Ghost in the Shell (Rupert Sanders, 2017), have resurfaced in recent times. These press controversies seem almost anachronistic after a generation of “intercultural” artistic theory and practice, “diversity” management training, and numerous academic discourses on otherness and difference, including those on cosmopolitan theory and practice. This article reviews yellowface practices and debates in contemporary times and puts them in dialogue with cosmopolitan aspirations of being “open to difference”, and argues that the latter cannot be taken as self-evident. It offers a way of thinking about yellowface practice via cosmopolitan pleasures evoked largely through modes of consumption, which “hollow out” the subjectivity of the character being depicted. On the site of the intersection between representation and subjectivity is where the identity politics occurs, yet, rather than universalising the issue, the article argues that a cosmopolitan approach should take on board

In 1964, his production of “Goldstein” won the Prix de la Nouvelle Critique at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1974, his co-production of Maximilian Schell’s “The Pedestrian” won the Golden Globe Award as Best Foreign Film and was nominated for an Academy Award in the same category. In 1986, Braun again teamed up with director Schell to co-produce “Marlene,” which earned him another Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature along with winning the New York Film Critics Award, The National Society of Film Critics Award and the National Board of Review Award. Braun’s all-consuming interest in filmmaking led him fresh from studying Humanities and Classic Arts at the University of Chicago to enter movies while still serving as President of Braun International, his family’s packaging firm. Some of Braun’s other productions include: “Angela,” starring Sophia Loren and John Huston; “Freedom Road,” starring Muhammad Ali and Kris Kristofferson; “The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu,” starring Peter Sellers; and “Where are the Children,” starring Jill Clayburgh and Frederick Forrest.     Some Chronological Observations on the Fu Manchu Series by Rick Lai In “A Question of Time” (The Rohmer Review, August 1917), Cay Van Ash did the fans of Sax Rohmer a great service by making insightful and accurate observations about the chronology of the Fu Manchu series. Many novels were not discussed in that important exercise of scholarship. In this article, I intend to primarily discuss five novels: The Golden Scorpion (1919), The Bride of Fu Manchu (1933), President Fu Manchu (1936), The Drums of Fu Manchu (1939), and The Island of Fu Manchu (1941). I will also critically re-evaluate Cay Van Ash’s contention that The Trail of Fu Manchu (1934) happened in early 1934. The Golden Scorpion is important novel in the continuity of the series because it contained the first appearance of the Ericksen Ray. Invented by a Norwegian scientist, the Ericksen Ray was a powerful weapon that could disintegrate matter. In The Golden Scorpion, the Norwegian scientist’s full name was given as Henrick Ericksen. The inventor was injected with a catalepsy-inducing drug by Fu Manchu’s colleague, Fo-Hi, and then abducted. The rest of the world believed Ericksen’s dead. Referring to Ericksen’s alleged demise, Fo-Hi made this comment in The Golden Scorpion (part IV, chap.1): “Then there was Ericksen, the most brilliant electrical expert of the century, who died suddenly last year.” The Ericksen ray was eventually reused by Rohmer in both The Drums of Fu Manchu and The Island of Fu Manchu.
