This omnibus edition represents a long anticipated collection. The art was stunning and the stories were as exciting and fascinating as any James Bond or Bruce Lee film. Fu-Manchu created by Sax Rohmer. As that characte This omnibus edition represents a long anticipated collection. As that character, and others in the series, has been under copyright protection, reprinting the stories of Shang-Chi were obviously tied up in legal issues. While many of the stories could have been reprinted, those featuring characters created by Rohmer would have had to have been left out and that would have left very little to be included in any collection. Now that those early novels featuring Shang-Chi's father are in public domain, collected editions are possible. These comics features some excellent stories Shang-Chi: Master of Kung-Fu Omnibus Vol. 1: Vol. 1 with espionage, loyalty, pacifism, violence, and Shang-Chi: Master of Kung-Fu Omnibus Vol. 1: Vol. 1 of familial duty and relationships. The art was often, but not always, very cutting edge for the era when it was produced; with unconventional page layouts and wordless fight sequences that were extremely unusual for "super-hero" comics. Hopefully this is only the first in a series of long-overdue volumes collecting the adventures of Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu. View all 4 comments. Jul 04, Blindzider rated it liked it Shelves: comics. While I developed a love of Shang-Chi: Master of Kung-Fu Omnibus Vol. 1: Vol. 1 arts many years later, I never even cared for Kung Fu itself. Because of all of this, I had zero desire to even read about Shang-Chi. Forty plus years later, I decide to give it a shot and it turns out to be much better than I anticipated. Shang-Chi occasionally thinks about different tenets of his beliefs, which drive his actions. In addition to his beliefs, an external force motivates the plot as well as him: he discovers his father Fu-Manchu is not what and who he always thought, causing him to dedicate himself to stopping the one who raised him. Shang-Chi teams up with a British agent who has reasons of his own to battle Fu Manchu and you have at least the first half of this volume. These two and a few other characters hop around the globe attempting to defeat Fu Manchu in whatever scheme he is employing at the time. At first this is interesting, but after a handful of issues it becomes very repetitious and almost a joke. Despite having no actual powers, you do believe in his speed and skill. Thankfully, the second half of the volume changes direction.

Ferdon, Jr., Ph.D. This thesis commits to highlighting major stereotypes concerning Asians and Asian Americans found in the U.S. media, the “Yellow Peril,” the perpetual foreigner, the model minority, and problematic representations of gender and sexuality. In the U.S. media, Asians and Asian Americans are greatly underrepresented. Acting roles that are granted to them in television series, films, and shows usually consist of stereotyped characters. It is unacceptable to socialize such stereotypes, for the media play a significant role of education and social networking which help people understand themselves and their relation with others. Within the limited pages of the thesis, I devote to exploring such labels as the “Yellow Peril,” perpetual foreigner, the model minority, the emasculated Asian male and the hyper-sexualized Asian female in the U.S. media. During that time, I examined the racist stereotypes of white, western people living in Taiwan on the natives. I compared the data I gathered from the field work with the Chinese stereo- type that is prevalent in the popular culture. The results show the importance of racist generalization in white westerners’ self-perception. The character called Fu Manchu, which emerges in various different media since 1913, appears to be an important means in measuring these changing perceptions. Fu Manchu’s fear factor is formed after the character’s way of expressing its sexu- ality when it was first created. In the western world after the “sexual revolution” in 60s, Fu Manchu is depicted scary because of the repression of its own sexuality. This research associates the philosophical causes of this change with the contradic- tions in Freud’s corpus. It also shows the importance of gender roles in the for- mation of whiteness. The white mob describes their opposite Chinese, and therefore Fu Manchu, deviant when they want to perceive themselves as sexually purified, chaste and virgin. Later on, when they want to create themselves from scratch as individuals who liberated their sexuality, Fu Manchu is once more devised as a symbol of malignancy who represses its sexuality.
