Rioja Oriental Wine Route HISTORY AND CULTURE Ancient Rome played a pivotal role in the history of Rioja wine and the vine-growing. Later, it was the religious communities that were in charge of traditional wine-making processes. Phylloxera reached La Rioja in the 19th century. This is one of the main diseases that affect grapevines and sadly devastated most vineyards. Once these challenges were overcome, in 1920 the name "Rioja" was protected, and a few years later, in 1925, the first D.O. Ca in Spain “Qualified Designation of Origin” was established, DOCa Rioja. 5 THE WINE Oriental Rioja Wines. DOCa Rioja wine usually comes from the harmonious reflection of the grape varieties grown under this qualified designation, spreading through three areas: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. These wines have perfect aroma composition, balance and vivid flavours. They are fresh, medium bodied, zesty, with excellent bouquet. Red, rosé and white wines feature this variety. Extraordinary surroundings are the ideal partner for wineries, vineyards, museums, ichnite sites, Celtiberian and Roman sites, castles, which is in turn, designated Biosphere Reserve. • CARLOS MORO GONZÁLEZ Carlos Moro Is a Passionate Wine Maker and Vine Grower, an Enthusiast for the Land and Its Vines. He Is A
CARLOS MORO GONZÁLEZ Carlos Moro is a passionate wine maker and vine grower, an enthusiast for the land and its vines. He is a third generation wine grower. His childhood was spent playing across the vineyards his family owned in the Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero and in Cigales. In the 60’s he has his first winemaking experience by helping his uncle Jesús during the winemaking process at the old family winery in Valoria la Buena (DO Cigales) which he still keeps. It was there that his acute intuition and love of wine grew. After studying in Madrid and becoming Doctor in Oenology and Viticulture, he worked in Madrid for many years until returning to its family lands in Ribera del Duero in the 80’s and founding Matarromera in 1988. After the great success of his Ribera del Duero wines, Carlos decided to continue his family winemaking tradition in DO Cigales, reinvigorating the area when he founded Valdelosfrailes in 1998. A decade later he was able to keep expanding his winemaking experience by opening wineries in DO Rueda and DO Toro. Later, in 2014 he completed his life-long dream of founding a winery in DOCa Rioja, which was named after him, Bodega Carlos Moro. Finally, he decided to expand in DO Ribeiro with Casar de Vide Winery. Nowadays Carlos Moro is the Founder, owner and Head Winemaker of 9 different wineries in 6 Spanish appellations of origin. Restless worker with a long-term vision on the benefits of innovation, sustainable development and respect for the environment, has led the production of wines that have their own personalities and the highest quality.

  • Final Vintage Report Fo Spain 2015
Vintage report for Spain 2015 A hot summer influences the harvest for the Spanish wine regions Across Spain the weather pattern was remarkably similar with temperatures rising at the end of June, a very hot July and then relief for the vineyards as cooler weather came in August. Harvest dates were generally a little earlier than usual and most regions were able to bring in the fruit in good weather. Favourable weather generally kept vineyard diseases at bay in 2015 however intense heat brings different challenges and how the vines coped with it depended on many factors including altitude, vine age, exposure, soil type and grape variety. There is plenty of talk of high quality from this vintage – whites with intense flavours and aromas and reds with great complexity and good ageing potential. Industry forecast for Spain’s 2015 harvest: 40-42 million hl. ************************************************************************** This report of Spain’s 2015 harvest is divided into the following regional sections: 1. Galicia: Rías Baixas, Monterrei, Ribeiro, Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras 2. The Duero Valley and the north-west: Ribera del Duero, Toro, Rueda, Bierzo, Cigales and Tierra de Leόn 3. The north: Rioja, Navarra and the Basque Country 4. Aragón: Campo de Borja, Calatayud, Cariñena and Somontano 5. North-central regions: La Mancha and Vinos de Madrid 6. Catalonia, Majorca and the south-east 7. Jerez Wines From Spain Page 1 Galicia DO Rías Baixas The growing season was far from typical in the coastal DO of Rías Baixas: the winter period saw less rain than in a typical year, spring followed suit and mild temperatures in the first two weeks of March resulted in an early budbreak starting in Condado do Tea and O Rosal.

A total of 65 commercial wines from different Spanish designation of origin (Alicante, Bullas, Campo de Borja, Jumilla, Castilla la Mancha, Ribeiro, Ribera de Duero, Rioja, Rueda, Utiel-Requena, Valdepeñas and Valencia) were characterized. The rare earth elements (REEs) content was determined by a high-temperature torch integrated sample introduction system (hTISIS) coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The REE content was used to draw characteristic PDOs radar charts. Results indicated that the REEs fingerprint provides a good prospect to discriminate the different Spanish PDOs, except for Alicante, Castilla la Mancha, Jumilla, Utiel-Requena and Valdepeñas. Finally, for those PDOs that were not properly distinguished, a second fingerprint obtained from Ba, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb and V content was used for discrimination purposes.
