0. Introduction

This Design, Access and Heritage Statement is submitted in support of the planning application for the proposed refurbishment works to the vault to the front of No. 28 Gibson Square, London.

In drawing up this proposal we have analysed and responded to relevant national and local planning policy in addition to the site’s unique built and historical context. We feel the resulting design to the vaults of a Grade II listed is appropriate and sensitive to its surroundings within the Barnsbury Conservation Area location.

Gibson Square sits close to Upper Street which is the principal retail thoroughfare in Islington.

1.4 Built Context Gibson Square is a Grade II listed late Georgian dating back to circa 1828-1830. The along the terrace are constructed of yellow in Flemish bond with stone detailing to the and surrounds. The first is accessed directly from the light well and there is a small door that opens under the metal staircase leading down from the street level. The second vault is accessible internally through a connecting space which sits directly below the supporting the entrance level steps and landing leading through to the main entrance door at ground floor level.

The first vault will require a general overhaul with some minor repairs to the and some waterproof treatment in the form of a cavity membrane system or a spray applied rendering system. The door to this vault will have to be repaired and refurbished with a new locking mechanism.

The second vault will similarly require a suitable waterproofing system and the floor is to be excavated and taken down to approximately 900mm below the level current shown. There will be 3no. steps leading down from the floor level of the main house. The vault will be used as a .
