Queens’ College, Cambridge 2014 (authors’ manuscript) The Vault with Curvilinear Ribs in the “Hall of Arms” in the Albrechtsburg Meissen: Studies on the Concept, Design and Construction of a Complex Late Gothic Rib Vault David Wendland, María Aranda Alonso, Alexander Kobe During the 14th and 15th centuries, the challenge of creating vaulted ceilings lead to ever more complex solutions in late Gothic architecture. These ambitious, astonishing and sometimes daring constructions rank amongst the finest masterpieces of architecture – extremely demanding from the structural point of view and particularly challenging in their geometric design. Their builders managed to overcome the difficulties of planning the complicated meshes of ribs soaring along spatial curves, providing instructions for the production of their single components and their assembly on the building site, and achieving a curved vault surface which corresponds to the equilibrium condition of shell structures. The discussion on how the design and planning of these structures was performed and how their construction process was organized, has been so far largely based on sources (some of them dating from long after late Gothic architecture was practised), and in particular on their interpretation as established in the 19th century. However, this current state of research can be shown to be in contrast with the evidence of many of the actual built objects. At this point, it appears necessary to formulate hypotheses on the design directly from the built artefact, and on this basis attempt a re-interpretation of the known drawings and treatises.1 For this approach it is also necessary to deal with the methodological challenges of using the building as source. -

Cover design by Jeff Belizaire About this book This is one part of the first comprehensive study of the development of Greek sculpture and painting with the aim of enriching the usual stylistic-sociological approaches through a serious, disciplined consideration of the basic Greek scientific orientation to the world. This world view, known as the Four Elements Theory, came to specific formulation at the same time as the perfected contrapposto of Polykleitos and a concern with the four root colors in painting (Polygnotos). All these factors are found to be intimately intertwined, for, at this stage of human culture, the spheres of science and art were not so drastically differentiated as in our era. The world of the four elements involved the concepts of polarity and complementarism at every level. -

This renewed interest in ornamental and richer decorative forms has spread from architecture to design, fashion and the visual arts in general. Ornament seems to have finally regained its place among the arts and has become once again a matter of reflection and experimentation, involving various materials and media. Adolf Loos’ aggressive condemnation in Ornament und Verbrechen (1910) appears now a long way off. This renewed interest has not left untouched the field of art and architectural history. Since the 1990s, and even more so since the beginning of this new century, studies have multiplied all over the world, involving an ever broader temporal and cultural panorama. This has led to numerous publications on the use, function and history of ornament, as well as the promotion of new editions of historical treatises, drawings and pattern books, in both printed and digital versions.1 These studies, which seem to increase every year,2 have not been limited to the Western arts, but 1 A recent example in this sense is Sabina de Cavi, ed, Giacomo Amato. MPX 1 Multi Processor FX User Guide Unpacking and Inspection After unpacking the MPX 1, save all packing materials in case you ever need to ship the unit. Thoroughly inspect the unit and packing materials for signs of damage. Report any shipment damage to the carrier at once; report equipment malfunction to your dealer. Precautions Save these instructions for later use. Follow all instructions and warnings marked on the unit. Always use with the correct line voltage. Refer to the manufacturer's operating instructions for power requirements. Be advised that different operating voltages may require the use of a different line cord and/or attachment plug. Do not install the unit in an unventilated rack, or directly above heat producing equipment such as power amplifiers. Observe the maximum ambient operating temperature listed in the product specification. Slots and openings on the case are provided for ventilation; to ensure reliable operation and prevent it from overheating, these openings must not be blocked or covered. Never push objects of any kind through any of the ventilation slots. Never spill a liquid of any kind on the unit. This product is equipped with a 3-wire grounding type plug. This is a safety feature and should not be defeated. Never attach audio power amplifier outputs directly to any of the unit's connectors. To prevent shock or fire hazard, do not expose the unit to rain or moisture, or operate it where it will be exposed to water. Do not attempt to operate the unit if it has been dropped, damaged, exposed to liquids, or if it exhibits a distinct change in performance indicating the need for service.
