Contemporary favourites nestle comfortably amongst classics and the 52 new wines that grace these pages ensure a choice that’s both at the cutting edge of market trends and guaranteed to suit your business. This year’s cover is designed to reflect the tasting note of a Provence rosé - ‘A beautiful pale shade of pink, this bone dry wine boasts affluent stone fruit aromas of peaches and apricots, followed by a refreshing note of grapefruit alongside a backdrop of savoury Provencal herbs’. The cover photograph, taken in 1960, features my grandfather Egbert Barnes - a champion of both our wine division and the old Brewery gardens – doing what he enjoyed best, savouring the bouquet of a particularly fine wine. While politicians debated Brexit last year, European vine growers were at least relieved to experience near perfect growing conditions following the devastating crop of 2017 vintage. Prosecco in Italy, Chablis in France and Rioja in Spain all produced high quality grapes at the expected quantity of production. As a result actual wine prices were stable, though downward exchange rate pressure and increasing costs of glass and freight has meant some gentle wine increases. We have tried to keep these to a minimum in such challenging economic times and worked closely with our loyal suppliers to spread the burden. It wasn’t just our continental partners who benefitted from the warm summer and for the first time we are featuring a red English wine – Knightor Carpe Diem Red made from Pinot Noir, Regent and Rondo grape varieties. We are also talking to the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester about stocking Cotswold Hills wine - the first ever sparkling English wine in a can that is fully recyclable and vegan. Vegan wines have been growing in importance, perhaps more so than organic. We have 130 wines that are certified vegan and the number grows month by month as we take on new wines and existing wines change to vegan production methods. Our new additions to the list comprise some new regions that we haven’t represented before, such as Villa Dante Verdicchio from the Marche region in Italy - a crisp dry white in a beautiful shaped bottle, and some more mainstream wines like Yallaroo Shiraz from South East Australia. 2018 saw us as proud recipients of the Queen's Award for Sustainable Development. As an extension of our commitment to both the local and wider community and environment, we have partnered with Cornwall Wildlife Trust to support their ongoing Living Seas project through one of our new wine offerings, The Deep. More of that on page 121. As always, we thank you for your custom and hope you will have as much pleasure exploring our extensive new range for 2019 as we have had putting it together for you. Historically the cold winters of this northerly wine region halted fermentation before the alcoholic process was completed. With the onset of warmer springs, fermentation restarted and as a result produced carbon dioxide, which escaped in the form of a bubble. By the end of the seventeenth century the English had developed a taste for this bubbly wine, a taste that has been encouraged ever since! "The House of Joseph Perrier is an individual and historic one. It is family-owned and this year sees the baton pass from fifth generation CEO Jean-Claude Fourman to his son Benjamin.
