  • Have Some Madera, M'dear
HAVE SOME MADERA, M’DEAR Story and photos by John Blanchette Quiet lanes flow through the Madera Wine Trail It was the July 4th weekend and I was headed into the Central Valley to visit Madera County and one of California’s oldest wine growing areas. The San Joaquin Valley can be blistering hot this time of year and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. Temperatures soared to 105 degrees. As my car drove on Route 99, slicing through this wide, flat and fertile plane that stretches over 200 miles between Bakersfield and Stockton, crops and livestock passed my window like an expanded grocery market. Table grapes, sugar cane, corn, tomatoes, citrus, peaches, plums, apricots, strawberries, watermelons, pistachio, pecan, Cattle range in the shadow of Giant Eucalyptus www.aiwf.org SAVOR THIS • OCTOBER 2010 15 almond, pomegranate and walnut trees, pigs, cattle, sheep, and dairy cows, etc. in abundance. One farmer told me that the topsoil is unlimited and all they need is water to grow their crops. And that’s a major problem. The current draught has caused some farmers to let their fields go fallow. The city of Madera, located 38 miles from the geographic center of California, derives its name from the Spanish word for wood, which was harvested in the Yosemite Valley foothills and shipped from Madera to build San Francisco and other area communities in the 1800s. The Madeira wine produced on the Portuguese Vineyards run to the mountains island made famous by the bawdy English tune I was off to confirm this as I explored the Madera “Have Some Madeira, m’Dear” is just a coincidence.

  • Moscato Rubino
MOSCATO RUBINO Brand: Salt of the Earth formed in 2011 as a partnership between an expert moscato grower, a veteran moscato winemaker, and an experienced winery owner to deliver better moscato at an affordable price. The expertise of the Salt of the Earth team is unparralleled in the moscato market and nothing comes close to Salt of the Earth quality in its price range. People & Place: Andrew Quady started Quady Winery as a muscat specialist in 1980 and hired winemaker Michael Blaylock in 1983. Winegrape grower Denis Prosperi has been growing muscat grapes since that time. With decades of experience working collaboratively to provide high quality muscat wines, their mission is to provide the best tasting value-priced moscato in the U.S. Salt of the Earth wines come from a warm, dry valley where the grapevines grow lush and the fruit hangs heavy with sugar: California’s San Joaquin Valley. Moscato grapes are grown in a variety of soils that are remnants of a vast inland sea. Warm days are just right for making sweet wines. The long summers ensure ample time to reach full ripeness before being harvested in the fall. Taste & Pairing: Aromas and flavors of ripe raspberry and black cherry. Medium body, sweet and tangy citrus marmalade and spice finish. Balanced with fruit acidity to finish clean. Serve chilled at picnics, parties, bbqs or your ocassion of choice. Especially delicious with anything savory that has a sweet sauce such as sweet-sour asian sauces, bbq sauce, or burgers with chutney. Technical Data Vintage: 2017 Grape Varieties: Orange Muscat, Muscat Canelli & Black Muscat Alcohol: 7.5% pH: 3.2 RS: 18.2 TA: 8.7 800-733-8068 [email protected] www.saltoftheearthwine.com .

Addendum regarding: The 2021 Certified Specialist of Wine Study Guide, as published by the Society of Wine Educators This document outlines the substantive changes to the 2021 Study Guide as compared to the 2020 version of the CSW Study Guide. All page numbers reference the 2020 version. Note: Many of our regional wine maps have been updated. The new maps are available on SWE’s blog, Wine, Wit, and Wisdom, at the following address: http://winewitandwisdomswe.com/wine-spirits- maps/swe-wine-maps-2021/ Page 15: The third paragraph under the heading “TCA” has been updated to read as follows: TCA is highly persistent. If it saturates any part of a winery’s environment (barrels, cardboard boxes, or even the winery’s walls), it can even be transferred into wines that are sealed with screw caps or artificial corks. Thankfully, recent technological breakthroughs have shown promise, and some cork producers are predicting the eradication of cork taint in the next few years. In the meantime, while most industry experts agree that the incidence of cork taint has fallen in recent years, an exact figure has not been agreed upon. Current reports of cork taint vary widely, from a low of 1% to a high of 8% of the bottles produced each year. Page 16: the entry for Geranium fault was updated to read as follows: Geranium fault: An odor resembling crushed geranium leaves (which can be overwhelming); normally caused by the metabolism of sorbic acid (derived from potassium sorbate, a preservative) via lactic acid bacteria (as used for malolactic fermentation) Page 22: the entry under the heading “clone” was updated to read as follows: In commercial viticulture, virtually all grape varieties are reproduced via vegetative propagation.

WINEMAKER'S NOTES JOULLIAN RETRO ROUGE N.V. • Estate Bottled Merlot caught Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon foolin’ around with Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Black Muscat up at Joullian vineyards, and just look what happened!! A few older (“mature”) barrels of Estate Merlot started checking out some nice young Zinfandel that was fraternizing with Cabernet Sauvignon while surreptitiously eyeing the chiseled and virile Syrah and Cabernet Franc who were strutting their stuff in front of the precocious Muscat Hamburg. In the ensuing melee, they all became embroiled in such a tumultuous blend of aromatics, supple- ness and unctuousness that the winemaking police were forced to incarcerate them together in deep, darkened glass confines sealed with large bark logs. The group was sentenced to 1-5 years, unless enlightened oenophiles manage to get them released early for good behavior. TECHNICAL INFORMATION: Varietal Content: 48 % Merlot 21 % Zinfandel 18 % Cabernet Sauvignon 9 % Syrah 2 % Cabernet Franc 2 % Muscat Hamburg Appellation/AVA: 100% Joullian Estate, Carmel Valley Fermentation: Primary/secondary fermentation completed in 11-38 days using multiple yeasts and malolactic strains Barrel Aging: Twelve to thirty-six months in Center of France oak barrels Alcohol: 13.3% Total Acidity/pH: 6.50g/L; 3.76 Residual Sugar: Dry (0.05%) Total Production: 1034 cases (750ml) Release Date: October 15, 2014 TASTING NOTES: Brilliant dark cherry/garnet color. Explosive black cherry, anise, cranberry and slightly earthy nose. FOOD COMPANIONS: Thai green curry, French fried zucchini chips, fish tacos, burritos de carnitas, osso bucco, anything hot off the barby, and entrecôte de boeuf.
