World of Warcraft: Chronicle I is analyzed from small-scale and large-scale intertextual comparison to Greek and Norse mythology. The aim of this essay is to introduce alternative literature outside the literary canon in the EFL classroom in Sweden. The aim is to connect gaming an outside school activity with reading. The analysis is divided into three parts, the first part focuses on the amount of reading that is done while playing a game like World of Warcraft. The second part focuses on intertextuality in the Chronicle to Greek and Norse mythology. Lastly, how the knowledge of intertextuality in the Chronicle can be used to interact with likeminded people by posting on forums in discussed. The goal is to connect gaming and reading to motivate reluctant readers. The kenning as rhetoric (of myth and history) round 1220 the Icelandic writer and historian, Snorri Sturlu- son, wrote a treatise on the rhetoric art of the skaldic poetry (“Skáldskaparmál”) which some seven hundred years later A 1 was partly reproduced by Borges in Argentina. When Borges wrote his essay on the kennings in 1933, he had not be- gun his studies of Old Norse and based his observations on transla- tions, into both English and German as indicated by his appendixed bibliography. Yet we can suppose that he had already become ac- quainted with the basic principle behind the kennings when he was a young boy and read Völsungasaga in the translation of William Morris 1 “Las kenningar”, in Historia de la eternidad. All references to Borges’ work (unless otherwise stated) are to Jorge Luis Borges, Obras completas, hereafter referred to as OC. This paper seeks to contribute to a recent debate on the use of private metal detect- ing and its value within archaeology. Specifically it explores – by presenting some recently found Viking Period artefacts from Denmark – how private metal detect- ing can contribute to our understanding of Viking minds. Snorri Sturluson: His Life and Work
Snorri Sturluson: his life and work Snorri Sturluson is the first major writer of Old Icelandic prose from whom we have a large body of extant writing, including some poetry, and whose life is, in outline, well documented. Unlike most earlier writers of prose, he was not a cleric, but an aristocratic layman, and nearly all he wrote is on secular topics. The main sources for his life besides annals are the nearly contemporary Íslendinga saga and the saga of Hákon Hákonarson (king of Norway 1217–1263), both by Snorri’s nephew Sturla Þórðarson; and the sagas of Guðmundr Arason (bishop at Hólar in northern Iceland 1203– 1237). Snorri was born in western Iceland in 1178 or 1179, son of the powerful chieftain Hvamms-Sturla whose family gave their name to the turbulent period of Icelandic history leading up to the loss of political independence in 1262–1264, the Age of the Sturlungs, which was also the great age of Icelandic saga-writing. When he was three (his father died in 1183) Snorri was sent to be fostered (i.e. educated) at Oddi in southern Iceland, with the chieftain Jón Loptsson (died 1197), grandson of the historian (writing in Latin) and priest Sæmundr fróði (the Learned). Jón himself was a deacon, but was prominent in the resistance of secular leaders to the extension of Church power in the later twelfth century. Many have thought that there must have been some sort of school at Oddi, but at that period in Iceland as elsewhere in Europe, most formal education took place in monasteries and cathedrals, and was based on training in Latin and preparation of pupils for ordination as priests. -

THE SEA STALLION FROM GLENDALOUGH Skaldic epics Many Nordic skaldic epics were handed down by word of mouth from generation to generation, but despite being retold many times they are still considered today to be important sources concerning the Viking period. As Snorri argues in his Heimskringla (World Cycle), a pride was taken in repeating the poem correctly and telling the truth. ”It is of course the skald’s duty to praise the most the one he stands before but no one would anyway dare to tell a man of exploits he has had if all the audience knew it to be lies and bragging. That would be an insult and not praise.” The skald’s praise of a king or chieftain was commonly in the form of an account of the man’s heroic deeds, for example in counsel or in war, such as seen below in Egil Skallagrimsson’s epic poem “The Head Ransom”: 'Westward I sailed the wave, 'Swell'd of swords the sound Within me Odin gave Smiting bucklers round, The sea of song I bear Fiercely waxed the fray, (So 'tis my wont to fare): Forward the king made way. I launched my floating oak Struck the ear (while blood When loosening ice-floes broke, Streamed from glaives in flood) My mind a galleon fraught Iron hailstorm's song, With load of minstrel thought. Heavy, loud and long. 'A prince doth hold me guest, 'Lances, a woven fence, Praise be his due confess'd: Well-ordered bristle dense; Of Odin's mead let draught On royal ships in line In England now be quaff'd. -

Sacrifice and Sacrificial Ideology in Old Norse Religion Daniel Bray The practice of sacrifice is often treated as 'the dark side' of Old Norse heathenism, by both medieval Christian commentators and modern scholars alike. However, within Norse religious practice, sacrificial ritual (blot) was one of the most central acts of religious observance. This paper will seek to examine aspects of the significance of blot within Old Norse religion, the ideology of sacrifice as it operated within this tradition and its relation to other Indo-European traditions, and the reactions to the issue of sacrifice by medieval contemporaries and modern scholarship. An examination of Old Norse literature relating to religious practice demonstrates the importance of blot within the religious life of the heathens of Scandinavia. Well over one hundred and fifty references to blot can be found in different sources, including Eddic and skaldic poetry, early historical works and annals, legal material, and saga literature. There are no extant scriptures or religious manuals from the heathen Norse that give a detailed explanation of the theory and operation of sacrifice. However, the accounts of sacrificial practice, taken altogether, provide a wealth of knowledge about how it was performed, by whom and to whom, as well as where, when and under what circumstances it was performed. The Old Norse verb bl6ta, which means 'to sacrifice', also has the extended meaning 'to worship', particularly by means of sacrifice, which testifies to the importance of sacrifice as a form of worship. In a language that had no proper word for its indigenous religion, the word blot had become a by-word for all things heathen, evidenced by terms such as blotdomr, blotskapr, or blotnaor 'heathen worship', bl6thus 'temple', bl6tmaor 'heathen worshipper' and even bl6tguo 'heathen god'.1 A survey of the literature reveals a number of essential features of sacrificial ritual in Old Norse heathenism. -

With this annotated translation done from the original idiom to Portuguese we intend to shed some new light upon this work to the modern public, whether to the scholar as to those that are taking your first contact with the poem.
