Thesis Reference Thesis Phylogeography of Myotis, Miniopterus and Emballonura bats from the Comoros and Madagascar WEYENETH, Nicole Abstract Using genetic markers, we reconstructed biogeographic origins, dispersal and diversification patterns of bats endemic to Madagascar and the Comoro islands. Our results give insight on when and how diversification was initiated in these western Indian Ocean bats: (1) populations of the Malagasy bat Myotis goudoti diverged into a southern and a northern component during the Pleistocene, with subsequent expansion and adaptation to all biomes, (2) Malagasy Miniopterus bats colonized the Comoros during the Pleistocene, favored by prevailing winds, yet recent inter-island gene flow is restricted to few individuals flying against winds but a notably shorter distance within the Comoros, (3) Emballonura lineages diverged during the Oligocene into two monophyletic groups, one represented by Malagasy members, the other by Indo-Pacific members, and (4) bioclimatic disparities between the humid east and dry west promoted the rather recent divergence of these emballonurid bats on Madagascar.     COMOROS 2018 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Union of the Comoros is a constitutional, multiparty republic. The country consists of three islands--Grande Comore (also called Ngazidja), Anjouan (Ndzuani), and Moheli (Mwali)--and claims a fourth, Mayotte (Maore), that France administers. In 2015 successful legislative elections were held. In April 2016 voters elected Azali Assoumani as president of the union, as well as governors for each of the three islands. Despite a third round of voting on Anjouan--because of ballot-box thefts--Arab League, African Union, and EU observer missions considered the elections generally free and fair. Civilian authorities maintained effective control over the security forces. On July 30, Comorians passed a referendum on a new constitution, which modified the rotating presidency, abolished the islands’ vice presidents, and significantly reduced the size and authority of the islands’ governorates. On August 6, the Supreme Court declared the referendum free and fair, although the opposition, which had called for a boycott of the referendum, rejected the results and accused the government of ballot-box stuffing. Human rights issues included torture; harsh and life-threatening prison conditions; political prisoners; use of excessive force against detainees; restrictions on freedom of movement; corruption; criminalization of same-sex sexual conduct, trafficking in persons, and ineffective enforcement of laws protecting workers’ rights. Impunity for violations of human rights was widespread. Although the government discouraged officials from committing human rights violations and sometimes arrested or dismissed officials implicated in such violations, they were rarely tried. Section 1. This subspecies is found in southern Polynesia, eastern Melanesia, and Micronesia. Three additional subspecies of E. semicaudata (E.s. rotensis, E.s. palauensis, and E.s. sulcata) are not discussed here unless they are used to support assumptions about E.s. semicaudata, or to fill in data gaps in this analysis. The Pacific sheath-tailed bat is an Old-World bat in the family Emballonuridae, and is found in parts of Polynesia, eastern Melanesia, and Micronesia. It is the only insectivorous bat recorded from much of this area.

    Indian Ocean Islands Comoros & Mayotte 26th September to 4th October 2020 (9 days) Mayotte Scops Owl by Daniel Keith Danckwerts Sprinkled through the tropical seas off East Africa are a series of volcanic and coralline islands where paradise is defined in a most exquisite beauty! On our exploration of these idyllic isles, we will search for birds in the most spectacular scenery; be it rugged forest-clad volcanic peaks, verdant forest patches or white, shell-laden beaches fringed by warm water and teeming marine life. Island wildlife is generally susceptible to extinction, however, and the islands of this area are no exception with birds like the unfortunate Dodo serving as stark reminders of Mans’ heavy hand. The Comoros Archipelago, in particular, consists of a series of volcanic islands off the central-east African coast. They are divided between the Union of the Comoros – a sovereign nation formed by the three islands of Grande Comoro, Anjouan & Mohéli – and the French overseas department of Mayotte. The vast evergreen forests that once dominated these islands have largely been removed, leaving only a few remaining pockets of RBL Indian Ocean Islands – Comoros Itinerary 2 pristine habitat. Collectively, the four islands boast roughly 24 endemic species but this will likely reach a staggering 40 with further research. The addition of incredible scenery, a series of easily approachable active volcanoes and particularly friendly locals have made these islands an enticing and rewarding experience.
