An elevating, counterweighted roadway was added to replace the transversing platform, ^rb carry the additional weight, a new steel structural support was incorporated within the confines of the old towers. , ¥ fhe roadway can be raised within sixty seconds to provide a 138 foot clearance at full raised height «/*ft is powered by electric storage batteries, and a gasoline engine is used for emergency stand-by power. m During the busy shipping season the bridge is operated approximately rn twenty-five times per day. Past original aerial bridge had vertical riveted steel trussed towers constructed on concrete piers on each side of the canal, with a bridging truss across the top. The structure stood 186 feet high at the apex of the truss and was thirty-four feet wide allowing 135 feet clearance overall./This clearance was demanded by the Lake Carriers Association and allowed for the passage of the highest masted ships of the day. O Suspended by an inverted steel tower from the underside of the truss, and transversing for the clear span distance of 393.75 feet was the gondola car. It was capable of carrying 125,000 pounds, measured 34 by 50 feet with space provided for one streetcar, two wagons, and 350 persons in two enclosed cabins. The car traveled at all tirn^s at a height of six feet above the top level of the concrete piers-^A round trip in the car took about ten minutes and the car could make twelve complete round trips per hour during peak periods. The car was powered by electric batteries, but provisions were maj^for manual operation in case of an emergency. The Aerial Bridge was designed by /Thomas F. JjcGifesa^iX in 1899 for the City of Duluth and was modeled after a slmiTar "BrTHgein Rouen, France/^ the only other example of this type of bridge in the world. After design approval, required by the United States War Department, construction ^egan in 1901'"on the concrete piers* The Modern Steel Structural Company of Waukesha, Wisconsin provided the steel framework and gondola car although construction on this phase did not begin until 1904. The total cost of construction when completed in ,JJ£05 was $108,000. U In 1929, the bridge was modified for permanent automobile use according to a design submitted by C. P. A. £«rner, nationally noted structural engineer of Chicago, Illinois. His design incorporated an elevating "lift" bridge to replace the transversing gondola car. This necessitated raising the height of the bridge and incorporating new structural support within the confines of the old towers to carry the counterweight roadway. Modification costs totaled $400,000. The bridge has remained unchanged LJJ to the present. The Aerial Lift Bridge stands as the western gateway to the Great CO Lakes - St. Laurence Seaway System. It is the unofficial symbol for the City of Duluth, representing its position as the world's largest fresh water port. Each year more than 500,000 people visit the harbor to watch ships from all over the world enter and deport beneath the Aerial Lift Bridge.     Stillwater Lift Bridge Management Plan Mn/DOT Bridge 4654 Report prepared for Minnesota Department of Transportation Report prepared by www.meadhunt.com and March 2009 Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) Historic Bridge Management Plan Bridge Number: 4654 Executive Summary The Stillwater Lift Bridge (Bridge No. 4654), completed in 1931, is a 10-span, two-lane highway crossing of the St. Croix River, between Stillwater, Minnesota, on the west and Houlton, Wisconsin, on the east. It is owned by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT). The bridge currently carries Minnesota Trunk Highway (TH) 36 and Wisconsin State Trunk Highway (STH) 64, in addition to pedestrian traffic. The bridge includes a counterweighted, tower-and-cable, vertical-lift span of the Waddell and Harrington type. The total structure length is about 1,050 feet. The bridge has seven, 140- foot, steel, riveted, Parker truss spans, including the vertical lift span. There are two reinforced-concrete approach spans on the west and a rolled-beam jump span on the east. At the west approach to the bridge is a reinforced-concrete circular concourse, about 94 feet in diameter, designed with Classical Revival architectural treatment. The concourse is integrated with the west approach spans in materials and design, including a continuous, open-balustrade railing. The bridge, including the concourse, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places (National Register). The concourse is included in the Stillwater Commercial Historic District (also listed in the National Register). The bridge and concourse are within the Stillwater Cultural Landscape District (determined eligible for the National Register).

    Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Local Historic Bridge Report- Abridged Executive Summary Bridge Number: L6116 Bridge L6116, also known as the Aerial Lift Bridge, was constructed in 1901-1905 and modified in 1929. It is located on Lake Avenue and spans the Duluth Ship Canal, which connects the city of Duluth with Minnesota Point. The City of Duluth owns the bridge. The original 1901-1905 aerial bridge had a gondola car suspended by an inverted steel tower from the underside of the truss. This truss remains extant as a structural member of the bridge. In 1929 the bridge was modified by adding an elevating roadway to replace the traversing platform, lengthening the steel towers, and incorporating new structural support within the confines of the old towers to carry the counterweight roadway. The Aerial Lift Bridge is a span drive configuration movable lift bridge. It is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C: Engineering as a rare bridge type of engineering at a national level. It is also a contributing resource to the determined-eligible Duluth Ship Canal Historic District. The Aerial Lift Bridge has had a series of rehabilitation work over the last 30 years. Major rehabilitations were conducted in 1986, 1999, 2007 and 2009. Among other repairs the major work in the rehabilitation included replacement of the operator’s house, bridge sidewalk and retaining walls (1986); repainting of the lower portion of the truss and floor system, and replacement of machinery and structural elements (1999); and repainting of the towers and upper portions of the truss (2007, 2009).
