He will licensed as Rector of Abbots Bickington, Bradworthy, Bulkworthy, Putford and Sutcombe by the Bishop of Exeter on Tuesday 27th January at 7.30pm in Bradworthy Church. Rev Chris Hardwick's last service in the Pyworthy Benefice will be at Pyworthy Church on Sunday 28th December 2014 at 10.30am. His licensing is on Wednesday 28th January 2015 in Tavistock Parish Church. Everyone is most welcome to attend these services. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ………………………………………. 1 ABSTRACT Extensive sources have been reviewed and analysed to piece together for the first time a detailed academic study of civilian evacuation to Devon1 viewed against the national backdrop. The primary focus of this thesis is the large number of unaccompanied children who were officially evacuated to the County under the auspices of the Government Evacuation Scheme during the Second World War. However, Chapter Six discusses the evacuation of mothers and accompanying children, unofficial (private) evacuees and private school parties. The majority of evacuated children arriving in Devon originated from the London area and southeastern counties. In addition large numbers of children were also evacuated to the County from Bristol and within the County from Plymouth (Devon) during 1941 and briefly from Exeter in May 1942. Each of the three national evacuation waves is considered individually throughout the text as they are quite distinct in complexion, a fact frequently ignored in generalised accounts which tend to focus on reaction to the initial wave.

We mark the season of Epiphany, the time when we celebrate Jesus revealed not just to his own people, but to everyone as the Son of God. We also mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. January is a time for setting directions. So as a Mission Community our direction has been set by the Mission Action Plan. The route we take for getting there may be circuitous and may take time – something like the Israelites in the desert – but it will be for a reason. We need learn what it is to be God’s people together and to work together, fellowship together, pray and worship together. Plans mentioned in last month’s News for Milton Damerel I am now told are by no means finally decided, as the people of Milton Damerel have yet to debate, think through and pray through the possibilities set before them. Let’s all undertake to support them with our prayers as they look to the future. Let’s also look for ways in which we can work together, not just as a Mission Community, but with our brothers and sisters from other churches. We all worship the same Lord. We are one body, let’s live that out practically, using opportunities that are given to worship together, to work together, to pray together. Whilst work related issues have been shown to prompt the majority of migrations, the role of extended kin deserves further attention. Plakans and Wetherell found that, the ‘placing [of the] domestic group within a larger kin context’, seen as the next logical research step as long ago as the 1970s, was an issue that remained largely unaddressed in 2003. 2 Here the impact of the extended family, on migration decisions and the likelihood of residential persistence, is investigated. Evidence for community cohesion has been sought and kinship links have been investigated; both have been found to influence the residential patterns of individuals.
