MUS 2008 Album Review Assignment
MUS 2008 Critical Perspectives on Contemporary Music Instructor: Peter Johnston Album Review Assignment Length: 800-1000 words (2-3 pages) Format: double-spaced, no extra line between paragraphs, size 12 font, 1” margins Submission: online through Blackboard, PDF or MS Word files only Late penalty: 10% per day late, counted from 11:59 pm each day Assignment Details: The purpose of this assignment is to comparatively examine the criteria used by two different music reviewers to judge the merits of an album. It is expected that you will use terms and concepts from the course content to frame your analysis. Please refer to the example reviews on Blackboard. This short essay must include the following: (1) References to two contrasting reviews of an album of your choice, meaning one that reviews the album positively and another that offers a negative reading of the album’s merits. The album can be from any popular music genre, but must have been made in the last ten years. These reviews should come from published music critics (from newspapers, magazines, industry websites like pitchfork.com, allmusic.com or billboard.com, etc.) but not fans’ websites, blogs, amazon.com comments, or the like. (2) An examination and comparison of the aesthetic criteria used in each review, meaning the terms, concepts, and assumptions that the authors employ to establish why they think the album is good or bad. (Note: often critics do not explicitly state the criteria they use and so you will most likely need to “read between the lines”). As an example of aesthetic criteria, one reviewer may praise the lyrical content of an album, while another may argue that the lyrics are weak. -

Piercings and Passports Exploring the Social Mobility of Adelaide’S Metalcore ‘Scene Kids’
Piercings and passports Exploring the social mobility of Adelaide’s metalcore ‘scene kids’ As young people continue to confront transition issues such as school-to-work pathways, they are concomitantly developing their own social and cultural priorities and responding to them in new and innovative ways. This process warrants a greater focus on young people’s identity work as they navigate their transitions through increasingly fluid social and cultural environments. Drawing on her current PhD research, Paula Rowe focuses attention on Adelaide’s ‘scene kids’, a community of interest based on a subgenre of heavy metal music. She utlises Bauman’s (2000) liquid modernity thesis to parallel the social dynamics of ‘liquid’ metal subgenres with those of the ‘liquid’ modern world. Exploring the social processes of scene kids highlights ways in which socioeconomic circumstances can affect young people’s level of engagement with lifestyle options. This in turn raises questions as to how “scene kid identities” might impact on other life pursuits and social transitions. by Paula Rowe outh transitions have dominated the youth research agenda for several decades, with a continuing focus on structural processes and institutional arrangements that Y shape and constrain young people’s holistic development, particularly in geographic locations characterised by conditions of social and economic disadvantage (Heath et al. 2009). More recently, there has been increasing interest in the ways in which young people’s identity work intersects and influences various social transitions within school, domestic and broader social contexts, and vice versa (Stokes & Wyn 2009). Despite the known social, economic and psychological constraints of marginalisation, young people still manage to find a space in which to express their identity and live a “life of one’s own”, yet not enough is known about the ways in which young people use cultural affiliations and lifestyle choices to express their identity and demonstrate personal agency in their social worlds (Miles 2000; Shildrick 2006). -
Interview from Guitar World Magazine ROB ARNOLD of Chimaira.Docx
Interview from Guitar World Magazine: ROB ARNOLD of Chimaira GW: What inspired you to play guitar? RA: A buddy of mine had just gotten an electric guitar and an amp. I was super stoked about how good it could sound with a little distortion and a whammy bar. Then I started seeing some of my idols and the things they were doing with a guitar on MTV, and I was immediately hooked. I told my mom that I needed a guitar. Sadly, but not unfortunately, she got me an acoustic. GW: What was your first guitar? RA: After the Acoustic, my first "real" guitar was a neon-yellow Ibanez. It came with a little Peavey combo for about 400 hundred bucks. My dad thought I was crazy; he was pushing me toward a more mildly colored sunburst Fender, but I wasn't havin' it. A flashy guitar hero movement was underway, and a flashy looking guitar seemed the way to become a part of it. GW: What was the first song you learned? RA: It was either Metallica's " To Live or To Die" or Megadeath's "Symphony of Destruction." Both Songs have monster riffs that greatly appealed to my young ears. GW: Do you remember your first gig? RA: I was about Fifteen years old, and my band at the time scored a gig at a "musicians night" show. We were told to arrive with our gear; all of the other bands would play on our equipment, and we'd close the show. When about five or six hundred people showed up, we gave ourselves a pat on the back, thinking it was due to all the flyering and promoting we'd done for the show. -
Tisa Bryant, Author/Scholar
TISA BRYANT, AUTHOR/SCHOLAR Tisa Bryant, born in 1966 in Tucson, Arizona. Interviewed on March 13, 2005 by Ana-Maurine Lara As you know, this project is really about hearing your story. I would love to start with an earlier part of your life, asking you about some of the defining moments from before the age of 20 that have really influenced who you are. I’ll work in reverse chronological order. Moving out of my parents’ home, a couple of days after high school graduation to New York for a very, very short stint. I didn’t know you lived in New York. Yeah, it wasn’t to the New York that I envisioned `cause we ended up in Long Island, so it was very, very different and very black, actually. I didn’t realize. I hear `island’ in this country and it kind of means something different. But yeah, being 17 in the summer, moving into and ended up in Boston and we were in the second term of Ronald Reagan. It was at that moment of really having to confront the world. I waited to finally be free to make my own decisions about life and it was really bewildering to really try to understand the systems that comprised the world and what they actually meant to me. I always knew that there was a lot of power in the world that I didn’t have, but then the kinds of interactions and being completely broke and really young and working a job and living in an apartment with a whole bunch of crazy kids who were just completely transient, you know. -

I heard a voice, strong and determined, as her lips moved. I heard words, that echoed in my ear with a familiar ring. I heard words, foreign to my tongue. I heard a voice triumphant and unwavering. I heard words of self-confidence and love. I heard words, articulated as clear as a flowering thought. I heard a voice as I looked into the mirror, a voice all my own. Karl Bryullov– Young Russian Girl 3 Finite Time, Infinite Dreams My eyes are open, but I am dreaming. I am awake, but drifting into the world of what will be. I remain in the same physical state, but mentally I am racing the clock. I run after it, the sensation in my heart extending to my legs. I watch the hand move rapidly from seconds to minutes. Tick-ambition roars within me. Tock-abruptly, I am brought back to reality. My heart rages with a burning passion. The dream-I cannot let it go. -
