Condition: New. 256pp. The riveting saga of the Venus of the Indian screen studded with rare and fascinating nuggets of information that throw new light not only on the life and times of Madhubala but also on the Golden Era of Hindi cinema and the dramatis personae involved The very mention of Madhubala (born on St. Valentines Day, 14 February 1933) conjures up a vivid image of a love goddess possessing bewitching beauty, dazzling radiance, subtle sensuality, and, above all, a tantalizing screen presence. Her histrionic performances held (and continue to hold) audiences/viewers entranced. Her talent was phenomenal and she could literally glide through a movie, whatever be the role. She could convey an impressive array of emotions with her eloquent eyes and nuanced expressions without resorting to melodramatic facial contortions. Tragedy, romance, comedy, drama and what have you ? she could take everything in her stride, exquisitely and flawlessly, as convincingly proved by superhits such as Mahal, Tarana, Mr. and Mrs. 55, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and the magnum opus, Mughal-e-Azam.The author, on the basis of extensive research and interviews with many of those who interacted with Madhubala (who mostly remained elusive), presents a spectacular panorama not only of the reel-life actress but also of the real-life human being, who was extremely caring and compassionate, but lived in the shadow of her dominating father.

  • Reel Number 13
Reel Number 13 Gayathri Prabhu and Nikhil Govind (from Shadow Craft: Visual Aesthetics of Black and White Hindi Cinema, Bloomsbury Academic, 2021) Meena Kumari in Abrar Alvi’s Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) Source: National Film Archive of India The decision to write this book emerged from our artistic and academic trajectories intersecting over the question of how to develop a vocabulary to speak about the visual aesthetics of a cinema that had left an indelible imprint on the infancy of the nation. The same aesthetics made its presence felt in the terrain of our childhoods in the 1980s when these movies and film-makers continued to be celebrated in popular culture via reruns on television and cassettes played on VHS (Video Home Systems). Kamal Amrohi, Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Nargis, Nutan and Abrar Alvi, came to represent a wistfully exhumed cinematic footprint. More recently, the iconic black-white- grey images from that time, stark to our colour-biased internet-weary eyes, reminded us that perhaps we had not given sufficient thought to what those assertive visual articulations represented to a collective consciousness that had shaped several decades of artists and viewers in India. The irony of this preoccupation with visual form, at a time when our engagement with the format was as far removed as possible from the original format of the cinema (35 mm), was not lost on us. Even though neither of us was born at the time of the films’ first theatrical release, our viewings were from television telecasts and cassettes played at home—for me it was the highlight of summer vacations in Mangalore (with gratitude to that archaic institution called the video rental library) and for Nikhil Govind these were viewings during school years in Burma (he wonders if the films were smuggled/pirated).

PAPER 6 DANCE IN INDIA TODAY, DANCE-DRAMAS, CREATIVITY WITHIN THE CLASSICAL FORMS, INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE IN DIASPORA (USA, UK, EUROPE, AUSTRALIA, ETC.) MODULE 15 KATHAK AS VOCATION For long has dance been a vocation in India. Both men and women have been ritual dance specialists associated with temples and monasteries. The story of the Devadasis, Maibis and Maharis / भहायी is well known. There are monk dancers in Assam called bhakats who are examples of males who dedicate their lives to the performance of dance as an offering and a ritual in a temple. There were also public platforms, where for entertainment purposes men and women danced. Chhau / छाऊ, Raibenshe / यैफᴂशे, Yakshagana / मऺगान, Kuchipudi / कु चिऩुड़ी, etc are examples of how and when traditionally males’ danced. Some of the women belonging to specific communities were associated with dancing for entertainment. For instance the Kalbelia / कारफेलरमा, Rai / याइ and Bedia / फेडडमा women were for centuries known to dance for entertainment. It is believed that the Bedia women danced for the laborers from different parts of the word who had collected at Taj Ganj at the time of the building of the Taj Mahal. Later they were among the communities and tribes that entertained the British troupes. Today many Bedia girls are among the Bar dancers of Mumbai. Apart from these girls there was also a group of traditional performers called by various names- Tawaif / तवामप, baijis / फाईजी, 1 etc. They were a whole range of professional dancing girls, some so talented that they had access to the highest centres of power, like the palace and the courtly setting, and were well integrated with the royals and the aristocracy.
