The same aesthetics made its presence felt in the terrain of our childhoods in the 1980s when these movies and film-makers continued to be celebrated in popular culture via reruns on television and cassettes played on VHS (Video Home Systems). Kamal Amrohi, Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Nargis, Nutan and Abrar Alvi, came to represent a wistfully exhumed cinematic footprint. More recently, the iconic black-white- grey images from that time, stark to our colour-biased internet-weary eyes, reminded us that perhaps we had not given sufficient thought to what those assertive visual articulations represented to a collective consciousness that had shaped several decades of artists and viewers in India. The irony of this preoccupation with visual form, at a time when our engagement with the format was as far removed as possible from the original format of the cinema (35 mm), was not lost on us. Even though neither of us was born at the time of the films’ first theatrical release, our viewings were from television telecasts and cassettes played at home—for me it was the highlight of summer vacations in Mangalore (with gratitude to that archaic institution called the video rental library) and for Nikhil Govind these were viewings during school years in Burma (he wonders if the films were smuggled/pirated).

    National Film Archive of India Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Government of India Press Note NFAI acquires rich haul of 2500 Film Posters A rare 6-sheet poster of Mughal-e-Azam is a part of the collection In one of the major acquisition in recent times, NFAI has acquired about 2500 film posters of Indian cinema. The collection includes about 1500 Hindi film posters, in addition to a number of Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam ones. These posters range from 1942 onwards till recent times. The collection showcases the evolution of film publicity covering various techniques of poster-making. The highlight of the acquisition is a very rare 6-sheet poster of Mughal-e-Azam (1960). The poster consists of six separate sheets and is of the dimensions 10 ft x 5 ft. It’s an offset print of a hand-painted poster. Thanks to its massive size, the poster achieves the astonishing feat of conveying volumes about the film. The poster has everything – from long shot depictions of the war sequence to a colourful snapshot of the sheesh mahal sequence, all done in beautiful brushstrokes. To balance the grandeur of these two depictions, the poster also features two intimate portraits. Akbar (Prithviraj Kapoor) sheds a tear in an emotional moment with his son and heir Salim (Dilip Kumar) as they are about to go to war. The shadow of Akbar’s war gear on his face is gorgeously detailed. And to cap things off, there’s a heartrending portrait of Anarkali (Madhubala) in chains, one of the iconic images of Hindi cinema.

    THE NEW INDIA AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART CELEBRATES CONTEMPORARY INDIAN CINEMA Special Appearances Include Human Rights Advocate Kiran Bedi, Academy Award- Winning Documentarian Megan Mylan, and Legendary Actor Naseeruddin Shah The New India June 5 – 18, 2009 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters NEW YORK, May 7, 2009—The richness and diversity of contemporary Indian cinema is explored in The New India, a two-week, 16-film exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, from June 5 through 18, 2009. The exhibition presents feature and short films, including eight New York premieres, that capture the range of fiction and documentary genres and styles in Indian cinema today. Among the celebrated guests who will present their films in person at MoMA are actors Naseeruddin Shah and Abhay Deol, actor-director Nandita Das, and the Academy Award-winning documentarian Megan Mylan. The exhibition is organized by Joshua Siegel, Associate Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art, and Uma da Cunha, guest curator. The New India opens on June 5 with the New York premiere of Megan Doneman’s Yes Madam, Sir (2008), a riveting portrait, narrated by Helen Mirren, of one of India’s most inspiring and controversial public figures, Kiran Bedi. Both Doneman and Bedi will introduce the opening- night screening. As India’s first elite policewoman and revolutionary reformer of one of India’s most notorious prisons, Bedi received the 1994 Ramon Magsaysay Award (Asia’s Nobel Prize equivalent) for her three-decade fight against corruption, bureaucracy, and human rights violations. India is one of the world's fastest growing nations, with a film industry to match.
