May 1967 — April 1971 Mining Apprentice Started working in Penallta Colliery from school aged 15, started as a mining apprentice then in 1969 transferred as an electrical apprentice. British rail April 1971 — May 1974 Railman Started on the Railways in Gillingham in Kent as a railman on the platform,was there for 1 year then had an inter regional transfer to Cardiff in Wales. Progressed through the grades ending up as a freight guard, then passenger guard in Rhymney. 1974 left the railway industry to go back into the Mining Industry N.C.B./ British Coal April 1974 — November 1991 Electrician/Control room Supervisor Returned to the mines ,progressing to appointed electrician on pit bottom and ending up as Control Room Supervisor until the closure of the Mine in 1991 Position included thel control and monitoring of coal from the coal face to the surface via skip winding. Reporting to the management team on work progress and deal with any issues affecting production. British Rail/Arriva Trains Wales April 1992 — October 2010 Control manager/Valley Lines Started back on the Railways progressed through the grades ending up in the Control room in charge of all Valley Line Services. Monitoring and controlling of all the valley line services.dealing with problems and liaising with net rail control staff to maintain services run to the timetable. Also recording on computer all maintenance for the train units ensuring they all ended up at canton diesel depot for their planned maintenance. Qualifications Although I have no written qualifications,I have gained a lot of work experience over the years. Studied as a Mining Engineer then onto an Electrical Apprenticeship.over the 1st 4 years of starting work from school. 1971 to 1974 gained Edward John Angove 1 vast experience in the Railway Industry which led me in good stead in years to come. 1974 to 1991. Returned to the Mining Industry working in Penallta Colliery,started out cutting out manholes in the haulage roadways.then returning to the electrical department as a wireman. After 3 years I was appointed pit bottom Electrician by the Colliery Manager and the Electrical Engineer. My main duties were maintaining the underground electrical locomotives used for hauling the coal to the pit bottom. After the Strike of 1984,The whole pit was automated with skip winding installed and everything underground was operated electronically which was all controlled and operated from a control room, purpose buil,.to which I was appointed one of the Controlling Staff. There I remained until the Closure of the Mine in 1991. 1992 I was lucky enough to get a job on the Platform in Cardiff General as it was then. I started off cleaning toilets by night progressing through the grades to Leading Railman then Chargeman on platforms 6/7. From there I was then Appointed to the roll of Valley Controller,in total charge of running the Valley Line network, instructing all staff employed on the valley lines including the train crew. The job also included making sure the trains had their regular maintenance carried out to schedule and recording same on computer . Education Mining apprentice May 1967 — April 1969 Ystrad Mynach college of further education Electrical apprentice april1969 — March 1971 Cross keys college Interests My main interest in life is Singing with Bargoed Male Voice Choir. I started singing with Bargoed in 1978, after having 4 years with the Lindsay Gleemen in Cefn Hengoed whom my Mother used to Accompany on the Piano. It has now become a way of life to me and I enjoy the singing and comeradary of the boys.as well as performing to others giving pleasure through singing. My second love is golfing though I'm not brilliant but it does keep me active as it is my only form of exercise and again the friendship among the members where I am in Bargoed is also brilliant.     REGULATORY APPRAISAL EDUCATION, WALES GOVERNMENT OF FURTHER EDUCATION CORPORATIONS (REVOCATION) (WALES) REGULATIONS 2006 Purpose and intended effect of the measure 1. These Regulations will revoke: • The Coleg Menai (Government) Regulations 1994 (S.I. 1994/1450); • The Education (Government of Further Education Corporations) (Former Sixth Form Colleges) Regulations 1992 (S.I. 1992/1957); and • The Education (Government of Further Education Corporations) (Former Further Education Colleges) Regulations 1992 (S.I. 1992/1963). 2. The listed Regulations are being revoked as a new set of Instrument and Articles of Government for Further Education Corporations in Wales has been prepared, following a consultation, at the request of the Further Education sector. The new Instrument and Articles will be given effect by The Further Education Corporations (Replacement of Instruments and Articles of Government) (Wales) Order 2006 to be made under Standing Order 29. The purpose of the revision is to consolidate previous modifications, aid transparency, reflect good practice in governance and take account of legislative changes. The revision of the Instruments and Articles by the associated Order will provide an updated standard set of Instrument and Articles of Government for all FE Corporations in Wales. The intention is that the new Instrument and Articles will come into force on 6 April 2006 for all FE Corporations in Wales. Risk Assessment 3. The purpose of the legislation is not about addressing risks or hazards. The probability of any significant risk or harm arising as a result of this legislation proceeding or not is likely to be minimal. 4.     “Not Just Supporting But Leading”: The Involvement of the Women of the South Wales Coalfield in the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike By Rebecca Davies Enrolment: 00068411 Thesis submitted for Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Glamorgan February 2010. ABSTRACT The 1984-85 miners’ strike dramatically changed the face of the South Wales Valleys. This dissertation will show that the women’s groups that played such a crucial supportive role in it were not the homogenous entity that has often been portrayed. They shared some comparable features with similar groups in English pit villages but there were also qualitative differences between the South Wales groups and their English counterparts and between the different Welsh groups themselves. There is evidence of tensions between the Welsh groups and disputes with the communities they were trying to assist, as well as clashes with local miners’ lodges and the South Wales NUM. At the same time women’s support groups, various in structure and purpose but united in the aim of supporting the miners, challenged and shifted the balance of established gender roles The miners’ strike evokes warm memories of communities bonding together to fight for their survival. This thesis investigates in detail the women involved in support groups to discover what impact their involvement made on their lives afterwards. Their role is contextualised by the long-standing tradition of Welsh women’s involvement in popular politics and industrial disputes; however, not all women discovered a new confidence arising from their involvement. But others did and for them this self-belief survived the strike and, in some cases, permanently altered their own lives.
