y a hongos Ascomycetes y Basidiomycetes primitivos, los cuales incluyen a los Ses. Entom. ICHN-SCL, IX (1995): 75-92 Barcelona, 1997 tizones, royas, cornezuelos, añublos, mohos, etc. (STEINER, 1984). En la región Paleártica se han descrito algo más de 100 especies incluidas en 10 géneros. En la Península Ibérica y Baleares se han citado hasta el mo- mento 33 especies de 4 géneros diferentes. Estas citas fueron recopiladas en el catálogo publicado por DE LA FUENTE en 1928 a partir de diversos autores del CITAS NUEVAS E INTERESANTES DE PHALACRIDAE DE siglo pasado y principios del presente. Muy pocos datos faunísticos han sido LA PENÍNSULA IBÉRICA Y BALEARES (COLEOPTERA) publicados desde entonces. La confirmación de las citas recogidas en el catálogo de DE LA FUENTE son necesarias. La razón es la dificultad, y por tanto, la confusión que genera la determinación de las especies de esta familia mediante el uso exclusivo de carácteres de la morfología externa, debido al aspecto muy homogéneo y, a D. Ventura veces, a la variabilidad intraespecífica que presentan. Sólo el estudio de nume- rosos especímenes o por medio de material de comparación, y en ocasiones el conocimiento de la planta sobre la que han sido hallados los ejemplares (hay especies que parecen presentar, al menos localmente, una fuerte estenofagia), ABSTRACT puede ayudar a reconocer a las diferentes especies con mayor seguridad. Selected representatives of Cucujoidea, Cleroidea, Tenebrionoidea, Chrysomelidae, and Lymexylidae were examined. External and internal head structures of larvae ofSphindus americanus and Ericmodes spp. are described in detail. The data were analyzed cladistically. A sister group relationship between Sphindidae and Protocucujidae is suggested by the vertical position of the labrum. The monophyly of Cucujiformia is supported by the reduced dorsal and anterior tentorial arms, fusion of galea and lacinia, and the presence of tube-like salivary glands. Absence of M. tentoriopraementalis inferior and presence of a short prepharyngeal tube are potential synapomorphies of Cleroidea, Cucujoidea and Tenebrionoidea. The monophyly of Cleroidea and Cucujoidea is suggested by the unusual attachment of the M. tentoriostipitalis to the ventral side of the posterior hypopharynx. Cucujoidea are paraphyletic. The families Endomychidae, Coccinellidae and Nitidulidae are more closely related to the monophyletic Cleroidea, than to other cucujoid groups. Separation of the posterior tentorial arms from the tentorial bridge and presence of a maxillolabial complex are synapomorphic features of Cleroidea and these cucujoid families. For a reliable reconstruction of cucujoid interrelation ships, further characters and taxa need to be studied. INTRODUCTION for a reconstruction of the phylogeny of the cucujoid, Sphindidae and Protocucujidae are two small families tenebrionoid and cleroid families. -

Biodiversity of New Zealand beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera). Memoirs of the Museum of Victoria 56(2): 659-666. Approximately 5235 species are described for New Zealand, including 354 introduced. They belong to 82 families in two suborders, Adephaga and Polyphaga. The New Zealand beetle fauna is distinguished by the absence of many major lineages, a high level of endem- ism. which in many groups is over 90% at the specific level and over 43% at the generic level (e.g.. Staphylinidae), and the radiation of many groups of genera and species. The origins of New Zealand's beetle fauna are still poorly understood. They are likely to be varied, includ- ing Gondwanan elements and elements which arrived here by short and long-distance dispersal recently and in the remote past. The size of the New Zealand beetle fauna is con- sistent with species number/land area relationships in other areas around the world. Abstract. A large-scale phylogenetic study is presented for Cucujoidea (Coleoptera), a diverse superfamily of beetles that historically has been taxonomically difficult. This study is the most comprehensive analysis of cucujoid taxa to date, with DNA sequence data sampled from eight genes (four nuclear, four mitochondrial) for 384 coleopteran taxa, including exemplars of 35 (of 37) families and 289 genera of Cucujoidea. Maximum-likelihood analyses of these data present many significant relationships, some proposed previously and some novel. -

General Overview of Saproxylic Coleoptera
Chapter 2 General Overview of Saproxylic Coleoptera Matthew L. Gimmel and Michael L. Ferro Abstract A broad survey of saproxylic beetles (Coleoptera) from literature and personal observations was conducted, and extensive references were included to serve as a single resource on the topic. Results are summarized in a table featuring all beetle families and subfamilies with saproxylicity indicated for both adults and larvae (where known), along with information on diversity, distribution, habits, habitat, and other relevant notes. A discussion about the prevalence of and evolu- tionary origins of beetles in relation to the saproxylic habitat, as well as the variety of saproxylic beetle habits by microhabitat, is provided. This initial attempt at an overview of the entire order shows that 122 (about 65%) of the 187 presently recognized beetle families have at least one saproxylic member. However, the state of knowledge of most saproxylic beetle groups is extremely fragmentary, particularly in regard to larval stages and their feeding habits. 2.1 Introduction to Beetles There are nearly 400,000 described species of beetles, which comprise 40% of all described insect species (Zhang 2011). In fact, one in every four animal species (from jellyfish to Javan rhinos) is a beetle. The dominance of this group in terrestrial ecosystems can hardly be overstated—and the dead wood habitat is no exception in this regard. The largest (see Acorn 2006), longest-lived, and geologically oldest beetles are saproxylic. Of the roster of saproxylic insect pests in forests, beetles M. L.
