DATES of TRIALS Until October 1775, and Again from December 1816
DATES OF TRIALS Until October 1775, and again from December 1816, the printed Proceedings provide both the start and the end dates of each sessions. Until the 1750s, both the Gentleman’s and (especially) the London Magazine scrupulously noted the end dates of sessions, dates of subsequent Recorder’s Reports, and days of execution. From December 1775 to October 1816, I have derived the end dates of each sessions from newspaper accounts of the trials. Trials at the Old Bailey usually began on a Wednesday. And, of course, no trials were held on Sundays. ***** NAMES & ALIASES I have silently corrected obvious misspellings in the Proceedings (as will be apparent to users who hyper-link through to the trial account at the OBPO), particularly where those misspellings are confirmed in supporting documents. I have also regularized spellings where there may be inconsistencies at different appearances points in the OBPO. In instances where I have made a more radical change in the convict’s name, I have provided a documentary reference to justify the more marked discrepancy between the name used here and that which appears in the Proceedings. ***** AGE The printed Proceedings almost invariably provide the age of each Old Bailey convict from December 1790 onwards. From 1791 onwards, the Home Office’s “Criminal Registers” for London and Middlesex (HO 26) do so as well. However, no volumes in this series exist for 1799 and 1800, and those for 1828-33 inclusive (HO 26/35-39) omit the ages of the convicts. I have not comprehensively compared the ages reported in HO 26 with those given in the Proceedings, and it is not impossible that there are discrepancies between the two. -

Irish Playwrights and the Dunedin Stage in 1862: Theatre Patrons Performing Civility PETER KUCH Irish Plays on the Dunedin Stage in 1862 A first-rate actor of Irish characters is indispensible on a London Stage. Cumberland’s British Theatre, 1828. Between 1862 and 1869 there were some 300 performances of Irish plays in Dunedin‘s theatres. Kuch, Irish Society for Theatre Research, 2010. A mere 14 years after it was founded by Presbyterians as a distinctly Scottish city that was ―in the world but not of the world,‖ Dunedin possessed two splendid theatres that during their first decade of operation staged some 300 performances of Irish plays and plays by Irish playwrights. How did this happen? Why Irish plays? Why Irish playwrights? And why were two theatres, with capacities of 1500 and 1330 persons, opened in Dunedin a year before Otago Boys High School was founded, five years before the foundations of First Church were laid, and seven years before the Provincial Council turned its attentions to establishing a University?1 Initially, it was the theatres that were a source of civic pride. According to an 1862 issue of the Otago Witness, Dunedin possessed ―two of the handsomest theatres in the Australian colonies.‖ 2 While there are doubtless many explanations for this rush to build theatres, the short answer is that the city was overtaken by the very world it had sought to isolate itself from. But this is an answer that invites explanation. First, it has to do with what was on offer on stage. It has been well established by theatre historians that Irish playwrights (particularly Dion Boucicault) and Irish plays (particularly comedy and melodrama) dominated the nineteenth-century stage—whether in Dublin or London or New York.3 It is also well known that, by the time the Theatre Royal and The Princess Theatre were opened in Dunedin, the ―legitimate drama‖4 had become widely if not firmly established as the secular vehicle for social and cultural improvement. -

One of the points of difference between the bearings of the Royal and Parliamentary Burghs on the one hand and those of the I Police Burghs on the other lies in the fact that the former carry castles and ships to an extent which becomes almost monotonous, while among the latter these bearings are rare. On the other hand, the Police Burghs very frequently assume a charge of which A 079 2 Aberchirder. examples, in the blazonry of the Royal and Parliamentary Burghs, are very rare : this is the cross, derived apparently from the fact that their market-crosses are the most prominent of their ancient monuments. In cases where the cross calvary does not appear, a cross of some other kind is often found, as in the present instance. -

Info about the Campaign After Napoleon had won many great victories on land in Europe, and crushed every country in battle. France was the dominating power in Europe on land and the English were masters of the sea. Behind their wooden wall of ships, they were relatively safe from any invasion force. Napoleon wanted to change this and invade England. In March 1802 a peace treaty was signed between France and England in Amiens, France. But both countries were irritated and angry with each other’s actions in the aftermath of the peace treaty, and it was an uneasy peace. And after some diplomatic quarrels England declared war on France again in May 1803. After war broke out again, Napoleon started preparation for invasion of England – but to have success, he needed to take out the English fleet that protected the English Channel. From 1803 to 1805 a new army of 150 000-200,000 men, known as the Armée des côtes de l'Océan (Army of the Ocean Coasts) or the Armée d'Angleterre (Army of England), was gathered and trained at camps at Boulogne, Bruges and Montreuil. A large "National Flotilla" of invasion barges was built in Channel ports along the coasts of France and the Netherlands. A fleet of nearly 2000 craft. At the same time he made plans with the Spanish to assemble a large fleet, which was strong enough to challenge the English Navy, and make it possible for Napoleon to invade England. -

Master of Arts (History), May 2007, 378 pp., 11 tables, bibliography, 275 titles. The topic of this thesis is the confrontations between William Gladstone and the Bank of England. These confrontations have remained a mystery to authors who noted them, but have generally been ignored by others. This thesis demonstrates that Gladstone’s measures taken against the Bank were reasonable, intelligent, and important for the development of nineteenth-century British government finance. To accomplish this task, this thesis refutes the opinions of three twentieth-century authors who have claimed that many of Gladstone’s measures, as well as his reading, were irrational, ridiculous, and impolitic. My primary sources include the Gladstone Diaries, with special attention to a little-used source, Volume 14, the indexes to the Diaries. The day-to-day Diaries and the indexes show how much Gladstone read about financial matters, and suggest that his actions were based to a large extent upon his reading. In addition, I have used Hansard’s Parliamentary Debates and nineteenth-century periodicals and books on banking and finance to understand the political and economic debates of the time. -

Criteria for Selection Rules for the Compilation An attempt was made to include in this sourcebook readings that provide intellectual depth and matter for thought. Most of the selected readings are well of the Catalogue known; a few, however, are little read but included as gems that deserve to be known. Panizzi's letter to Lord Ellesmere, for example, reflects in miniature the British Museum whole of the Anglo-American cataloging experience. Inevitably, the selections have an Anglo-American bias; particularly notable by their absence are representatives of the Indian and German schools. Some restriction was necessary to keep the volume to a manageable size, and, since it was felt that the literature written in English and about the Anglo-American tradition would be of most immediate Editor's Introduction interest, it is this writing that is represented. The vo lume includes relatively few recent contributions. This is a consequence of the fact that much recent writing Why should rules for a dead catalog be of interest today? is devo ted to the engineering of online catalogs and to the mechanics of interface, Because the history of cataloging shows that controversies rather than to the more philosophical issues of the purposes of the catalog and the recur, although why these controversies should be perennial means to achieve these. -

Encounters on Education Volume 7, Fall 2006 pp. 113 - 130 Tocqueville and Lower Canadian Educational Networks Bruce Curtis Sociology and Anthropology, Carleton University, Canada ABSTRACT Educational history is commonly written as the history of institutions, pedagogical practices or individual educators. This article takes the trans-Atlantic networks of men involved in liberal political and educational reform in the early decades of the nineteenth century as its unit of analysis. In keeping with the author’s interest in education and politics in the British North American colony of Lower Canada, the network is anchored on the person of Alexis de Tocqueville, who visited the colony in 1831. De Tocqueville’s more or less direct connections to many of the men involved in colonial Canadian educational politics are detailed. Key words: de Tocqueville, liberalism, educational networks, monitorial schooling. RESUMEN La historia educativa se escribe comúnmente como la historia de las instituciones, de las prácticas pedagógicas o de los educadores individuales. Este artículo toma, como unidad de análisis, las redes transatlánticas formadas por hombres implicados en las reformas liberales políticas y educativas durante las primeras décadas del siglo XIX. En sintonía con el interés del autor en la educación y la política en la colonia Británico Norteamericana de Lower Canadá, la red se apoya en la persona de Alexis de Tocqueville, que visitó la colonia en 1831. ANGLO-GERMAN CULTURAL RELATIONS Language & literature, travel & tourism, c.1714–1914 The catalogue before you, published to mark my tenth anniversary as an independent bookseller, has been years in the making. Many people know me for selling Russian material, but in fact my interest in Germany About has always been stronger. German has always been my favoured foreign this language and I have enjoyed finding, researching, and writing about the catalogue books, manuscripts, music, and ephemera which make up this catalogue. It’s only when you specialize, and collect, in any depth that things start to get interesting, and that has certainly been the case here. You see connections, reactions, and developments; pieces of a historical jigsaw fall into place. The material here charts the cultural connections between the English- and German-speaking worlds in, roughly, the two hundred years between the Hanoverian Succession and the First World War. Through travel and translation, one culture discovers another; discovery then leads to influence. A German immigrant teaches music in London, the same year (1737) an Englishman in Göttingen compiles the first anthology of English literature for Germans. Later, in the 1760s, the first English translations of German literature are mirrored by the appearance of Wieland’s influential edition of Shakespeare. The catalogue documents two major eighteenth- century European literary events: Ossian and Werther, both linked by and to the young Goethe, whose own Faust so captured the English imagination in the nineteenth century. (The web of influence within literature itself is likewise tantalising: Werther reads Ossian, Frankenstein’s monster reads Werther.) The rise of the Gothic is also found here: Bürger’s Lenore in five English translations (1796–7), one of them Walter Scott’s first book, but the influence, surprisingly perhaps, was felt even earlier (and the other way round), in Sophia Lee’s The Recess, translated by Benedikte Naubert in 1786. -

Younger son Lord Chancellor 1618, created a viscount 1621. Eight further MPs in the 16th and 17th centuries, including kts of the shire for Norfolk and Suffolk. -

They Were Always Doing Shakespeare: Antebellum Southern Actresses and Shakespearean Appropriation Robin O. Warren, University of Georgia Abstract Antebellum actresses performed in a wide variety of plays meant to appeal to the diversity of spectators who attended the nineteenth-century theater. Theater historians agree, though, that plays by William Shakespeare dominated standard repertory offerings. No one has recognized, however, that many of the non-Shakespearean plays actually appropriate Shakespearean plots, a phenomenon that may partly account for the popularity of these dramas. While many plays popular on Old South stages appropriated Shakespearean plots, four especially stand out for paralleling closely their early modern inspirations. Evadne (1819), by Richard Lalor Sheil, draws on Much Ado About Nothing (1600); Virginius (1820), by James Sheridan Knowles, uses Titus Andronicus (1592) as a guide; The Wife (1833), also by Knowles, follows the plot of Othello (1603); and The Honey Moon (1805), by John Tobin, corresponds to The Taming of the Shrew (1592). Evadne and Virginius stress the necessity of protecting a young, unmarried woman's purity while The Wife and The Honey Moon emphasize the importance of wifely fidelity and deference. As the experience of antebellum actresses Eliza Logan, Jane Placide, Frances Denny Drake, and Julia Dean Hayne shows, however, women who performed the lead female parts in these plays did not always live up to the expectations espoused in their stage roles; instead, they often exposed the artificiality of rigidly prescribed gender roles in their daily lives by transgressing against the very norms they affirmed on stage. In 1820, Jane Placide, a young actress from Charleston, South Carolina, debuted with Charles Gilfert's Virginia Company in John Tobin's The Honey Moon (1805), an appropriation of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew (1592).
