The 1930s proved that: the Winter Olympics in Germany in 1936, when the President of the International Olympic Committee threatened to cancel the Games unless the anti-semitic posters were all taken down now, whatever Adolf Hitler decrees; the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin and Hitler's look of utter disgust when Jesse Owens, a negro, won the 100 metres; the World Heavyweight title fight in 1938 between Joe Louis, a negro, and Germany's Max Schmeling which carried racial undertones and overtones. The fight lasted 2 minutes 4 seconds, and in that time Louis knocked Schmeling down four times. They say that some of Schmeling's teeth were found embedded in Louis's glove... Motor racing, a dangerous but genteel activity in the 1920s and early 1930s, was touched by this, too, and touched hard. The combustible mixture produced two Grand Prix races at Donington Park, in 1937 and 1938, which were just as dramatic, just as sinister and just as full of foreboding. This is the full story of those races. -

S. Patent No. 132. Their motors ran at up to 600 revolutions per minute, and powered machine tools and a printing press. Img. Src.: Electric Vehicle News ● 1881: The capacity of lead–acid rechargeable battery was increased significantly by Camille Alphonse Faure, another French scientist. ● Camille Alphonse Faure patented a method of coating lead plates with a paste of lead oxides, sulphuric acid and water, which was then cured by being gently warmed in a humid atmosphere. ● The curing process caused the paste to change to a mixture of lead sulphates which adhered to the lead plate. ● During charging the cured paste was converted into electrochemically active material (the "active mass") and gave a substantial increase in capacity compared with Planté's battery. ● August 1, 1881: French inventor Gustave Trouve made his benchmark report to the French Academy of Sciences. -

Contents Luton: Motor Town Luton: Motor Town 1910 - 2000 The resources in this pack focus on the major changes in the town during the 20th century. For the majority of the period Luton was a prosperous, optimistic town that encouraged forward-looking local planning and policy. The Straw Hat Boom Town, seeing problems ahead in its dependence on a single industry, worked hard to attract and develop new industries. In doing so it fuelled a growth that changed the town forever. However Luton became almost as dependant on the motor industry as it had been on the hat industry. The aim of this pack is to provide a core of resources that will help pupils studying local history at KS2 and 3 form a picture of Luton at this time. Competition and the Workplace in the British Automobile Industry. 1945-1988 Steven To!!iday Harvard University This paper considers the impact of industrial relations on competitive performance. Recent changesin markets and technology have increased interest in the interaction of competitive strategies and workplace management and in particular have highlighted problems of adaptability in different national systems. The literature on the British automobile industry offers widely divergent views on these issues. One which has gained widespread acceptance is that defects at the level of industrial relations have seriously impaired company performance. Versions of this view have emanated from a variety of sources. The best known are the accountsof CPRS and Edwardes [3, 10], which argue that the crisis of the industry stemmed in large part from restrictive working practices, inadequate labor effort, excessive labor costs, and worker militancy. From a different vantage point, Lewchuk has recently argued that the long-run post-War production problems of the industry should be seen as the result of a conflict between the requirements of new American technology for greater direct management control of the production processand the constraints resulting from shopfloor "production institutions based on earlier craft technology." This contradiction was only resolved by the reassertion of managerial control in the 1980s and the "belated" introduction of Fordist techniques of labor management [13, 91. On the other hand Williams et al. have argued that industrial relations have been of only minor significance in comparison to other causes of market failure [30, 31], and Marsden et al. [15] and Willman and Winch [35] both concur that the importance of labor relations problems has been consistently magnified out of proportion. -

The anticipated date on which this policy will be reviewed is December 2019. Mg Car Club History
MG CAR CLUB HISTORY The first complete MG Car Club History was compiled by the late Mike Hawke and published in 2000 to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Club. The book was soon out of print, there was clearly a need for a replacement and Peter Browning volunteered to edit an enlarged and updated version. This is the first of a multi-part series. It is a little over six years since I put together a page of readers’ correspondence for The Light Car including the letter that started it all. It appeared over the signature of one Roy Marsh and was published in the issue of September 5, 1930. Why Not an MG Club? Being a very interested reader of The Light Car and Cyclecar, I notice that a number of one make clubs have been formed lately with very satisfactory results. Now Midget enthusiasts, what about an MG Car Club? There are hundreds of you and surely some very enjoyable social runs and trials could be arranged. Perhaps MG owners would let me have their opinions on the idea. Quite brief and to the point, it took immediate effect. That was as inevitable as the subsequent growth of the Club. You cannot have a lot of people rushing round the country in cars like MGs without wanting to get together. Various people wrote to various other people. HM Post Office was enriched by numerous pennies inserted in numerous slots and one or two more letters appeared in The Light Car. The upshot of it all was an announcement in that journal of an inaugural rally on October 12 for the purpose of formally bringing the Club into being.
