Welcome to St Peter’S Eastern Hill Diocese of Melbourne - Anglican Church of Australia Parish Church of the City Since 1846 Welcome to ST PETER’S EASTERN HILL Diocese of Melbourne - Anglican Church of Australia Parish Church of the City since 1846 ‘The Unmerciful Servant’, Rembrandt (1660) ORDINARY SUNDAY 24 6TH SEPTEMBER 2020 O God, you call your Church to witness that in Christ we are reconciled to you: help us so to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may turn to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen FROM THE WARDEN & TREASURER PLEASE CONTINUE TO HELP US IN THESE TROUBLED TIMES We are separated because of the pandemic but we are still together as parish. We are still caring for each other. Our liturgy continues – albeit in a virtual form – and innovations are occurring with our Rosary and meditation group. The parish is still doing God’s work through the Lazarus Centre and the Social Enterprise. However, we still have expenses in keeping us going, keeping our music alive, and keeping us in touch with each other. The maintenance costs of the parish continue unabated as we clean the hall and church more thoroughly now than ever before. It is stewardship time, where we ask you to recommit to helping the missions of St Peter’s. We ask you to continue to be an instrument of God’s grace. Please continue your generosity to keep the parish going, supporting each other and supporting the wider world. Your contributions help the parish budget so that we can continue our ministries - our music, our liturgy, our bookshop, our work with RMIT, our work with the homeless and up-skilling people into work, the telephone tree, and our teaching ministries. All these things cost money. All rely on your regular commitments and generous giving. There are many ways of supporting the work of the parish, please continue to do so and, in this time of additional costs and reduced revenues, please increase your commitment if you can. Stephen Duckett - Vicar’s Warden Peter Griffin - Treasurer How you can contribute financially: Direct payment to the Parish account held by Anglican Development Fund: BSB: 703-122 Account number: 05005124 A regular deposit helps us meet the ordinary bills of the parish. Please put your name in the relevant field so we can acknowledge your contribution. Tax deductible donations: • A donation to the Melbourne Anglican Cultural Organisation, speci - fying St Peter’s, helps keep our fantastic music program going. Please specify your name so we can acknowledge the donation. You can donate at this website: www.melbourneanglican.org.au/maf-donation-page/ • A donation to the National Trust, specifying St Peter’s, is used for main- tenance and building works. Please specify St Peter’s and your name so we can acknowledge the donation. BSB: 033 000 Account Number: 937 419 Bequests: Please also remember St Peter’s in your will. Bequests can be made for a specific purpose (such as maintenance) and you can also specify that the bequest be placed in our ‘endowment fund’ so that only the interest or dividends are used for the work of the parish, but the initial amount you donated remains intact. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE DANNE FAMILY Congratulations to Catherine and Alex on the birth of Geoffrey Christopher Theodore Danne. We look forward to a Christening as soon as the Premier will allow! SUNDAY MASS READINGS First Reading: Sirach 27.30 - 28.7 Anger and wrath, these are abominations, yet a sinner holds on to them. The vengeful will face the Lord’s vengeance, for he keeps a strict account of their sins. Forgive your neighbour the wrong that is done, and then your sins will be pardoned when you pray. Does anyone harbour anger against an other, and expect healing from the Lord? If one has no mercy toward an other like oneself, can one then seek pardon for one’s own sins? If a mere mortal harbours wrath, who will make an atoning sacrifice for that one’s sins? Remember the end of your life, and set enmity aside; remember corruption and death, and be true to the commandments. Remember the commandments, and do not be angry with your neighbour; remember the covenant of the Most High, and overlook faults. Psalm 103.1-2, 3-4, 9-10, 11-12 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits. R. It is the Lord who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy. R. He will not always accuse, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. R. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far he removes our transgressions from us. R. Second Reading: Romans 14.7-9 My brothers and sisters, we do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. Gospel: Matthew 18.21-35 Peter came and said to Jesus, “Lord, a brother or sister sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times. For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ The lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. “But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’ Then his fellow slave fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he would pay the debt. When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him,You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” PRAYERS FOR THE SICK: Kingsley Armstrong, David Bornstein, Michael Boyle PRIEST, Sr Gloria CHN, Mary Grima, Bradley James, Grace James, Adain McCann, Alice McCraith, Jack Neville Mulready, Lyn Nicholas, Georgina Rankin, John Small, Bruce Smith, John Stewart BISHOP, Margaret Sutherland, Evelina Thornton, Joan Waldren-Small, Paul Wheelton, George and Charles. • This 2008 Letter
The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury & The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of York July, 2008 Most Reverend Fathers in God, We write as bishops, priests and deacons of the Provinces of Canterbury and York, who have sought, by God’s grace, in our various ministries, to celebrate the Sacraments and preach the Word faithfully; to form, nurture and catechise new Christians; to pastor the people of God entrusted to our care; and, through the work of our dioceses, parishes and institutions, to build up the Kingdom and to further God’s mission to the world in this land. Our theological convictions, grounded in obedience to Scripture and Tradition, and attentive to the need to discern the mind of the whole Church Catholic in matters touching on Faith and Order, lead us to doubt the sacramental ministry of those women ordained to the priesthood by the Church of England since 1994. Having said that, we have engaged with the life of the Church of England in a myriad of ways, nationally and locally, and have made sincere efforts to work courteously and carefully with those with whom we disagree. In the midst of this disagreement over Holy Order, we have, we believe, borne particular witness to the cause of Christian unity, and to the imperative of Our Lord’s command that ‘all may be one.’ We include those who have given many years service to the Church in the ordained ministry, and others who are very newly ordained. We believe that we demonstrate the vitality of the tradition which we represent and which has formed us in our discipleship and ministry – a tradition which, we believe, constitutes an essential and invaluable part of the life and character of the Church of England, without which it would be deeply impoverished.

  • Mission 1991
Come and See Mission 5th -19th May 1991 1 Preparation The mission itself took place over the 15 days leading up to and finishing with Pentecost, but a great deal of preparation was necessary to make sure we were ready, both for the spiritual challenge and the practical requirements involved. A mission committee was formed to plan and co-ordinate all the preparations. One aim in the planning was to include as many different people as possible, to make good use of the variety of skills within our membership. The preparation was fundamentally important for the mission to succeed. It certainly helped to create enthusiasm in our congregation and we were drawn closer together in the process. Prayer First and foremost came prayer. Two whole years before the mission, the PCC decided that it was a suitable time to reach out to the parish, and we prayed that we would find the best way forward. The idea of a parish mission was suggested and a visit from the Diocesan Missioner, Father (now Bishop) Lindsay Urwin OGS filled in some details. A mission would be primarily for us, to renew and deepen our faith but also we would be reaching out to the whole parish and extending a particular invitation to those people in the parish who already had loose connections with the church, such as parents of the Sunday school children and Brownies, those who had had their child baptised within the previous 3 or 4 years etc. The Mission Committee’s first task was to choose a title for the mission and to compose a mission prayer.

Westminster Abbey Sung Eucharist marking the 40th anniversary of the ordination to the priesthood of John Robert Hall 4th July 2016 5.00 pm Sit Deo gloria Biographical Note John Robert Hall was born on 13th March 1949, the second of four children of Robert and Margaret Hall, who brought up their family in Eltham, South- East London. They were active members of the Church of St John the Baptist, Eltham Parish Church. From the age of five, John was a boat boy and joined the church choir at the age of eight, becoming head chorister. Later he re-joined the serving team and became sacristan. He was educated at Eltham Church of England Primary School and St Dunstan’s College. He recognised a vocation to ordination at the age of seventeen. After school, John spent six months teaching at Starehe Boys’ Centre in Nairobi before reading Theology at St Chad’s College in the University of Durham. He then taught Religious Education for two years at Malet Lambert High School, a senior comprehensive school in Kingston-upon-Hull. He trained for the ministry at Cuddesdon Theological College. John was made Deacon by The Right Reverend Mervyn Stockwood, Lord Bishop of Southwark, in his Cathedral on 29th June 1975 to serve a title at the Church of St John the Divine, Kennington. He was ordained Priest in Southwark Cathedral on 4th July 1976 and sang his first Mass on 5th July. The Deacon on that occasion was today’s preacher, The Right Reverend Graham James, Bishop of Norwich. On All Saints’ Day 1978, John was licensed as priest-in-charge of All Saints’ Church, South Wimbledon, and, on 2nd October 1984, he was instituted by The Right Reverend Ronald Bowlby, Lord Bishop of Southwark, and inducted by the Archdeacon to serve as Vicar of St Peter’s Church, Streatham.

Others will be watching at home, and will have the ‘reserved sacrament’ with them so they can communicate at the appropriate time in the service. Others will be watching at home and will make a spiritual communion when the time comes. Others will not be able to watch the service, but will spend time following the service paper and then either make their communion with the reserved sacrament or make a spiritual communion.
