GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

At 10 am the church bell is rung, and as we prepare to worship our Lord, the cantor sings a prayer of St Richard of .

O holy Jesus, most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, and follow thee more nearly. Amen Music: L J White

I H

1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

3. To all, life thou givest – to both great and small; In all life thou livest, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish – but nought changeth thee.

4. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; All laud we would render: O help us to see ’Tis only the splendour of light hideth thee.

W Chalmers Smith 1824 -1908 NEH 377

 In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen

Peace be with you. And also with you.

PENITENTIAL RITE

The celebrant introduces the service and invites the people to confess their sins:

My brothers and sisters, as we wait for the Lord to speak to us through his Word and feed us with the gift of himself in the Holy Communion, let us call to mind our sins.

Let us pray

O God, you know us to be set in the midst of so many and so great dangers that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright: grant to us such strength and protection as may support us in all dangers and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

MINISTRY OF THE WORD A R B J 2: 1 -10, 14 -17

My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favouritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, “Have a seat here, please,” while to the one who is poor you say, “Stand there,” or, “Sit at my feet,” have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonoured the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you? You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgres- sors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become account- able for all of it. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

For the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Jesus preached the Good News of the kingdom, and healed all who were sick.

T H G

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Mark  Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

7: 24 -37

From there Jesus set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” But she answered him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” Then he said to her, “For saying that, you may go — the demon has left your daughter.” So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, “He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Deacon Jack

After the sermon there is a short time for reflection.

P F

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,  and the life of the world to come. Amen

P P

All respond at the end of each petition

Lord in your mercy Hear our prayer.

After the last petition

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

7

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

T P

The love of the Lord never ceases; his compassion never fails; his peace knows no end.

The peace of the risen Lord be always with you. And also with you.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

O H

During the singing of the hymn, the altar is prepared for Holy Communion.

1. Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kingly crown When thou camest to earth for me; But in Bethlehem’s home there was found no room For thy holy nativity.

Refrain O come to my heart, Lord Jesus; There is room in my heart for Thee.

2. Heaven’s arches rang when the angels sang, Proclaiming thy royal degree; But in lowly birth didst thou come to earth, And in great humility.

Refrain

3. Thou camest, O Lord, with the living word That should set thy people free; But with mocking scorn and with crown of thorn They bore thee to Calvary:

Refrain

4. When all heaven shall ring, and her choirs shall sing, At thy coming to victory, Let thy voice call me home, saying, Yet there is room, There is room at my side for thee:

Refrain Emily Elliott 1836 -97

T G T

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

8

All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God.

We give you thanks and praise for our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us.

By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

The celebrant continues the prayer which now recalls the Last Supper and the invitation from Jesus to remember his death and resurrection in the gift of Holy Communion.

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit,

The sanctuary bell is rung. 9

we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 

The sanctuary bell and the church bell are rung.

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ 

The sanctuary bell and the church bell are rung.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

 Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord,

The celebrant sings

Through him, with him, in him, united in the Spirit; All glory, honour, praise are yours, O God Almighty Father.

10

T L’ P

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The celebrant breaks the Host in silence A D

I C

Behold the Lamb of God Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper.

Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

Those who are making a spiritual communion should pray the following prayer:

At your feet O Jesus I prostrate myself before you with an unworthy yet contrite heart, humbled, yet longing to be in your eucharistic presence.

11

I love the gift of yourself offered to me in this great and Blessed Sacrament. Though unable to receive this food for my journey, I desire all the graces that this encounter with you can bring, and offer my heart afresh as a place where you might dwell. While I wait for the day when I shall again have the joy of sacramental communion, I trust in your desire to abide in me, and wish to possess you in spirit. Come to my heart, Lord Jesus, there is room in my heart for you. Amen

As we reflect on the gift of divine love experienced through the Word of God and the Holy Sacra- ment, the cantor sings:

He gives us more grace as our burdens grow greater, He sends us more strength as our labours increase; To added afflictions he adds his great mercy, To multiplied trials, he multiplies peace.

When we have exhausted our store of endurance, When our strength has failed ere the day is half done, When we reach the end of our hoarded resources Our Father’s full giving has only begun.

Fear not that your need shall exceed his provision, Our God ever yearns his resources to share; Lean hard on the arm everlasting, availing; The Father will bear up both you and your cares.

His love has no limits, his grace has no measure, His power no boundary known unto men; For out of his infinite riches in Jesus He blesses, and blesses, and blesses again.

Once you have received communion or made your spiritual communion, spend some time in re- flection. You might find it helpful to use the following prayer in thanksgiving:

Grant me O Lord, to pass this day in gladness and peace, without stumbling and without stain; that reaching the eventide victorious over all temptations, I may praise you, the eternal God who are blessed, and govern all things, world without end. Amen

P C P

Keep O Lord your Church with your perpetual mercy; and because without you our human frailty cannot but fall, keep us ever by your help from all things hurt- ful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

THE BLESSING AND DISMISSAL

The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty,  the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen

Go in the peace of Christ Thanks be to God

1. All for Jesus! all for Jesus! This our song shall ever be; For we have no hope, nor Saviour If we have not hope in thee.

2. All for Jesus! thou wilt give us Strength to serve thee hour by hour: None can move us from thy presence While we trust thy love and power.

3. All for Jesus! All for Jesus! This the Church’s song shall be, Till at last the flock is gathered One in love, and one in thee.
