European Train Names: a Historic Outline Christian Weyers
ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA European Train Names: a Historic Outline* Christian Weyers DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.201 Abstract This paper gives a first overview of the onomastic category of train names, searches to classify the corpus and reviews different stages of their productivity. Apart from geographical names (toponyms, choronyms, compass directions) generally indicating points of origin and destination of the trains in question, a considerable number of personal names have entered this category, of classical literary authors, musicians and scientists, but also of many fictional or non-fictional characters taken from literature or legendary traditions. In some cases also certain symbolic attributes of these persons and finally even heraldic figures have given their names to trains. In terms of their functionality, train names originally were an indicator of exclusiveness and high grade of travel quality, but they developed gradually, as they dispersed over the European continent, into a rather unspecific, generalized appellation, also for regional and local trains. After two periods of prosperity after 1950, the privatisation of railway companies starting in the 1990s had again a very positive effect on the category, as the number of named trains initially reached a new record in this decade. ***** The first train names appeared in England in the 1860s in addition to names for steam locomotives, and on two different levels. The Special Scotch Express between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh (inaugurated in 1862) was called by the public The Flying Scotsman from the 1870s, but it succeeded as the official name not before 1924. Also the names of the German diesel trainsets Der Fliegende Hamburger and Der Fliegende Kölner were colloquial name creations, as were the Train Bleu and the Settebello operated from 1922 and 1953 but officially named in 1947 and 1958, respectively. -

Schlafwagen WLABsm 166, Epoche IVb Die Beschaffung neuer Schlafwagen wurde Mitte der siebziger Jahre über den internationalen Schlaf - wagenpool (TEN) abgewickelt. Brussels Rail Transport Brief: March 2021
BRUSSELS RAIL TRANSPORT BRIEF: MARCH 2021 Date: 21 April 2021 European Regulatory Newsletter By: Miguel A. Caramello Alvarez, Philip Torbøl, Alessandro Di Mario, Inês Mendes ANTITRUST AND COMPETITION German Court asks ECJ About Review of Rail Station Fees The Berlin Higher Regional Court has lodged a request for a preliminary ruling with the European Court of Justice (ECJ) concerning railway station fees charged by Deutsche Bahn's DB Station & Service. DB Station & Service was sued by a rail transport company for reimbursement of excessive fees between November 2006 and December 2010. The regional court backed the claim, concluding that the DB subsidiary is obliged to reimburse these amounts. On 30 December, the Berlin Higher Regional Court referred two questions to the ECJ, asking whether it is compatible with Directive 2001/14/EC concerning railway infrastructure charges for national courts to review fees based on antitrust rules independently of the monitoring carried out by the regulatory body and, if so, whether civil courts are allowed to conduct an antitrust review even when railway undertakings can ask the regulatory body to review the fairness of the price. Lastly, the court asked whether civil courts must wait for the decision of the regulatory body, or if it is contested before court, for that decision to become final. Czech Agency Fines Firm for High-speed Railway Tender Manipulation The Czech Office for Protection of Competition has fined Sudop Praha €360,000 for entering into an illegal bid- rigging agreement. It was found that between November 2014 and May 2015, Sudop and Výzkumný Ústav Železniční (VUZ) coordinated their bids for a tender for a technical operational study for high speed railway lines. -

This also requires significant as European Coordinator for TEN T public investment, which the European recovery plan should facilitate. Making railways a major provider (ERTMS) of mobility and logistics also requires that it be able to operate within a single European framework and that the digitalisation of the sector be accelerated, particularly in terms of rail signaling and traffic management. Europe's major role in the railway industry must be protected against unfair competition from the rest of the world. Finally, the railways must be attractive to users, in particular through better interconnections and the ongoing revival of night trains. The extension of the dedicated infrastructure should contribute to this, making these network corridors our European "silk road". The ambition is also to build a more crisis-resilient European rail network in order to avoid disruptions in freight supply chains. -
